A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution have announced that The Animated Series on Blu-ray will make its debut in November...

Cool, now I don't have to buy that 50th anniversary set and get a bunch of stuff I already have just to get TAS on blu ray. I know others have said that high definition doesn't make any difference to them with traditional cell animation. But I definitely notice the difference on my TV. When I watched "Looney Tunes" cartoons in HD, I decided to never go back to DVD if I can help it.

I only have it because of the 50th set, the convenience of upgrading all TOS content to bluray at once.

The series hasn't been altered in any way, I mean it's cleaner and higher resolution (to an extent) but there's very little real difference.

I got the 2006 Region 1 set back in the day and it was getting difficult to keep playing them on regular region locked players. Anyone who has their own regions DVD's or a more recent release of them, I wouldn't bother unless you really want everything to be HD.

From the news item it seems that all the disc content (episodes and extras) is exactly the same as on the dvd release, with the only differences being the postcards (and of course the HD quality of the episodes). Is this indeed the case?

I'll be ordering it on Tuesday. I've never owned the set on any phyical medium, but I've been enjoying watching it on Netflix. Amazon has disincentivized be from preordering (they don't allow me to use my Visa points on preorders any more).

That is indeed the case. The content is the same, only the definition of the episodes has changed -- the bonus material is indistinguishable from the DVD.

Ooo, the thick black lines around the characters and time-saving sillhouettes will be even sharper. PT Barnum lives!

this 1080p transfer of Star Trek: The Animated Series looks to have been sourced from the same master as Paramount's respectable 2006 DVD set.

There’s an interactive “What’s the Star Trek Connection?” feature that points out how certain creatures and plot points in the series relate to other parts of the Star Trek franchise–it’s irritating to watch, because after each item we get the same plug for more Star Trek DVDs for sale, a bit of footage that you’ll have to sit through multiple times if you want to see all the trivia bits contained herein.
If you have the DVDs, the upgrade isn’t necessary, unless you’re yearning to see even more specks and abrasions than you noticed previously.

I think I'll pass on this TAS series on Blu-ray since it is a not a new film telecine done with a scan of the original camera negative [OCN] like how they did TOS remaster and the blu-ray sourced from that. This new TAS on blu-ray was also not a state-of-the-art 4k resolution scan downsampled to HD...

I received my set from Amazon today. It's a very nice package, and the Juan Ortiz cards are gorgeous. But, how often will I look at them?

Anyway, I didn't do a back-to-back comparison, but as expected, the blu-ray picture quality seems to be very slightly better than Netflix. A review somewhere noted that they hadn't cleaned up dirt, etc. I've only watched the first episode, but I didn't notice any dirt. I saw the junk mattes, but they can't do much with them without major expense and effort.

The uncompressed audio sounds very nice. I can hear details in the orchestration that I never noticed before.

Someone at blu-ray.com noticed audio synch issues. I had watched two episodes, and thought it was just sloppy editing in the originals. But, this person compared it to the Netflix versions, which don't have the problem. After it was pointed out, I watched "One of Our Planets is Missing", and did seem to notice synch problems at times, but not throughout. I've been watching with the surround track, but apparently it affects the mono track as well. Has anyone else owning either the standalone set or the set included w/ the 50th blu-ray set noticed a problem?

I checked mine and found no issue.
But mine are from the 50th set -- which was a different pressing.

I cant imagine anyone buying this on bluray. Even Netflix is perfectly adequate for this show.

*Raises hand without hesitation*

Shit, I got this when it was on VHS, I picked it up on Laserdisc, grabbed the DVDs and now have the set on BD with the 50th anniversary box. While there really isn't that uch of an uptick in quality from DVD to BD, I would have bought it separately.

There are a lot of really good episodes of TAS.

I guess you meant to say "I can't imagine myself buying this on bluray."

I just can't see the value of having them on Blu-Ray since resolution is not really improved.

The resolution is improved compared to the DVDs (and even compared to Netflix).

That won't do anything to improve the quality of the original animation, of course, which will look about as clunky in HD as it does in SD. I'll probably buy this, but not until it's at a much reduced price point.
