The Admiral "F***ing" Clancy Appreciation Thread

She's more upfront about her dislike for Picard than Admiral Nechayev.

Although I also think the reason Nechayev never threw a F-bomb at Picard was because TNG was a syndicated series aired on free TV with a PG rating...
She was very obviously thinking it.

I don't like her. She has quite attitude for someone who was proven wrong and then spilled the beans to the bad guys. At least Nechayev was competent at her job and had enough smarts to know you don't command respect by constantly yelling and cussing at people under you or equal to you.

I understand people swear. I swear. Data said shit once. I get that. Clancy telling JL to "shut the fuck up" didn't cross any lines or cause me to fetch my fainting couch. It's just bad writing. I know practically no one in here will agree with me, and that's okay. Just my two strips of latinum.

Nechayev was competent?

We're talking about an Admiral who thought it was a good idea to send a decorated Federation captain (in command of the Federation flagship); one Klingon and one doctor to a Cardassian research facility just to verify a possible weapon. The data they had on the facility itself was years old; yep she somehow thought this plan would be successful.

There's also the fact that for years previous, Star Fleet and the Federation we're bending over backwards to appease the Cardassians, because the Federation couldn't afford another war; yet here we have an Admiral that sends in an ill equipped team on a mission that would probably lead to war, and in fact almost did.

I think you need to add 'in' to the word competent, to accurately describe Nechayev. :rommie:

Still love that scene where she tears into Picard (maybe episode 2?) when he comes to ask for a ship. It helps assert the tone early on that Picard's influence has dwindled considerably by 2399. I'm expecting Clancy to get obliterated by Oh somehow.

Oh, you're probably right. I just don't like her. Swearing for swearing's sake is not...I'm gonna say it...it's not Star Trek.

COME AT ME
Okay. The reason there was no swearing on televised Star Trek before Discovery was because of the FCC, not because humans had evolved beyond it or because it's "not Star Trek". Looking at Bones and Spock's interactions it really feels like a few F bombs would have been dropped by McCoy if the show could have gotten away with it. And TNG was not above having Picard say "Merde".

I like her and I loved her attitude in episode 2, Picard deserved it. He talks shit about starfleet on space tv, basically calls them criminals and then waltzes into Clancy's office two days later, asking for a ship and a crew and telling her he'd "accept" a demotion to captain because of some conspiracy he has zero proof even exists. He was arrogant as fuck and that he turned out to be right doesn't change that Clancy's reaction in the moment was completely justified.

I just realized that she is Mrs. Man In The High Castle as well. Great actresss!

I'm talking about the f-word from a production point of view. In-universe, every other word out of Chief O'Brien's mouth probably should have been the f-bomb. I don't have a problem with characters swearing in principle.

I don't know. It just feels gratuitous (and it felt gratuitous in DSC too). Part of it is the actress playing Clancy; she is awwwwful. Didn't sell the line at all. Oh well. Not everyone can be an Olivier or a Brophy.
