The 82nd Annual Academy Awards - discussion thread

There's the run up for Avatar. I'm just not impressed by the effects. Sure, technically they're nice, but on a visual front, I've seen better.

All the random people I've talked to about Avatar were like, meh ok but I wish I spent my >$20 on something else. I got a far more positive reception for Star Trek from my non-geek friends.

The self-fulfilling prophecy of Avatar's own media hype seems to be the only thing driving ticket sales in my area. Word of mouth certainly isn't.
I really doubt that. The kind of repeat business this film has gotten isn't something media hype can generate.

Why do they start these awards shows so late? I need to go to sleep. It's freaking Sunday and most of this country has to work in the morning.

I know they are on the west coast but would it throw that big of a wrench into their lives to start it an hour or two earlier?

Then they will apologize for the best picture award not coming out till past midnight on the east coast and how next year they will make things go faster. They don't have to speed up the ceremony. Just start it earlier.

The show started at 7:30 central time, I believe the red-carpet stuff started an hour or so earlier which is 4:30 or as late ad 5:00 on the West Coast. Pretty darn early to start a black-tie event like this. Further, "Prime Time" doesn't start on the west cost until 8:00, so -in theory- the awards can't start any earlier without intruding on local stations' air time.

So, I'd say the show starts as early as it can.

If you ask someone versed in the tech and industry, they'll no doubt agree with you. Hence while I am not surprised it won.

From my end-consumer perspective, i.e. the person who actually pays for a ticket to see it, I was not wowed or impressed. Trek wowed me.

I may be biased because I did not care much for the new Trek at all and I very much wanted to.

I do know random people go on and on to me about Avatar, people who watch genre fare, people who never do normally, everyone. I don't think it's just being swayed by the media.

> $20? Wow, that's a lot. The Imax 3d showing up here was $12.50.

It will be interesting if Director and Picture end up split, with hurt locker picking up director and avatar picking up picture...

Bigelow won the Director's Guild of America award. That winner almost always goes on to win the Oscar.

Thanking the Academy for not considering Na'vi a foreign language --.

Betcha 10 bucks Cameron will speak in Na'vi for his acceptance speech......again.
What makes you think he's going to get one? At this point, THL's got Director and Picture locked up, I think.

I think you're right. And even though I think Cameron deserves the director nod he DOES already have one--for his last movie--and Bigelow did a phenomenal job.

And hence why people in my area are not going back for repeat viewings. They aren't impressed enough to spend that money twice. My friends and I certainly weren't.

"On that same film I saw him play with his three...."

Oh dear God, no! Don't finish that sentence!

"... daughters."

Phew!
