The 82nd Academy Awards & STAR TREK

Another analysis of the PGA nod:

Analysis: This is bad news for "Nine" which was an expected no brainer here before negative reviews and disappointing box office scuttled its campaign. The big surprise isn't just "District 9" making the cut, but "Star Trek." To say Sony Pictures and Paramount have a real shot of getting both pictures into Oscar's top ten now is a bit of an understatement. Sony Pictures Classics must also be breathing a sign of relief that "An Education" made the PGA ten. At this point, it's pretty close to a lock to landing that long hoped for Oscar nod. The one other player who could still affect the ten is "The Blind Side" which has more than enough momentum for a fourth quarter charge even without the PGA love.

I still think Trek is a long shot for Best Picture, but it's not out of the realm of possibility at the moment...especially since Oscar nomination ballots just went out in the past week.

"Star Trek"

PGA nominee: Yes
SAG Ensemble nominee: No
Golden Globe Best Picture nominee: No

Oscar Status: Never say never.
Why: On one hand, there was a contingent that believed the PGA would recognize the achievement of J.J. Abrams and co. for jump-starting a dormant franchise for a whole new generation. However, with the old school stigma still associated with those two words: "Star Trek" landing the nomination is still a bit of an head scratcher. The question is, can Paramount convince enough SAG voters in the Academy jumping off the "Nine" bandwagon to select "Star Trek" instead? One thing is for sure, Trekkers everywhere now have a reason to get up early and watch the Oscar nominations on Feb. 2.

No love for Moon? Shucks. However, if Star Trek gets a Best Picture nomination I'll ... I don't know what I'd do.

You always have to consider the competition. And Nine no longer seems to be that. But others are. As of right now, the Best Picture race looks something like this:

(NEAR-)LOCKS

The Hurt Locker
Avatar
Up in the Air
Inglourious Basterds
Precious

LIKELY

Invictus
An Education
Up

POSSIBLE

A Serious Man
District 9
The Messenger
Star Trek
The Last Station
The Blind Side
(500) Days of Summer

So essentially, if Star Trek wants to be part of that select group, if will have to defeat at least 5 of those above-listed seven contending films. It did just that at the PGA, but the question is where do Academy voters, a somewhat different group of people, stand? Genre bias may very well prevent it, and if a second sci-fi film gets in, it's more likely to be District 9. In fact, that is what I'm predicting: District 9, plus either A Serious Man or The Messenger.

Star Trek made the short-list for the Visual Effects Oscar. It is one of seven films that will compete to be one of the final three nominees.

The Seven on the short-list are:
“Avatar”
“District 9”
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”
“Star Trek”
“Terminator Salvation”
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”
“2012”

Well the only real certainty for nomination (and win) is Avatar.

These four I give about the same chance to grab the last two spots: District 9, Star Trek, 2012, and Transformers 2.

If I had to bet, the list would be:
Avatar
District 9
Star Trek

If District 9 makes the ten slot I'll be really surprised. It's a great movie, but it'll just be shocking to see the Academy give merit to science-fiction and fantasy films.

Star Trek is on the short-list for the Academy Award for Best Makeup:

“District 9”
“Il Divo”
“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”
“Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”
“The Road”
“Star Trek”
“The Young Victoria”

Following the viewing of 10-minute presentations of each film, it will be narrowed to the three nominees. Star Trek VI and Star Trek: First Contact are the only Trek films to be nominated in this category, losing to Terminator 2 and The Nutty Professor, respectively.

The ACE nominees have leaked out - And Star Trek is nominated for best edited drama!

Drama:
“Avatar”
“District 9″
“The Hurt Locker”
“Star Trek”
“Up in the Air”

Comedy or Musical:
“(500) Days of Summer”
“The Hangover”
“It’s Complicated”
“Julie & Julia”
“A Serious Man”

Animated:
“Coraline”
“Fantastic Mr. Fox”
“Up”

This is significant, because the ACE nominations are usually a very good indicator/predictor of the best picture nominees at the Academy Awards. There is a decent chance that Star Trek might be nominated for BP!

I'd give Makeup to TREK over, say, DISTRICT 9 seeing as that film was largely extraterrestrial CGI superimposed over top of stop-motion stand-ins. There's not much actual makeup aside from a few of the changes to the lead actor's right arm and face as the alien DNA begins to take over his body.

Though if you watch the special features on the D9 DVD set, there's a hell of a lot more going on with those transformation appliances than it at first appears. I actually can't think of a single makeup application in Star Trek as elaborate as Wikus's arm, upper body and head.

I'd agree. A lot of Trek's makeup seemed really in the background such that the only things I really remember are Keenser, the reptile-like lady on the Bridge, and the barfly. I know they did more work, but it wasn't as evident on screen, so I can see District 9 winning.

It's like how The Nutty Professor beat Star Trek: First Contact.

The BAFTA nominations were just announced and Star Trek was nominated for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.

Also, interesting to note that District 9 picked up 7 nominations, for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay. Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, and Visual Effects. This buzz could effect its Oscar chances for Best Picture and if it gets enough attention, could hurt Star Trek's chances.

Avatar picked up 8 nominations.

The Best Picture contenders are Avatar, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Precious, and Up in the Air.

The Visual effects "bake-off" was just held yesterday, with the 7 semi-finalist films showing off effects from the films and holding Q&A sessions.

Here are some Twitters from that event. The most interesting one:
After the bakeoff, heard more buzz about #StarTrek than #2012 or #Transformers. Surprising.

So we may actually see these 3 as the final Oscar Nominees:
- Avatar
- District 9
- Star Trek

I'm surprised. I would have assumed 2012 was a far more likely nomination than Star Trek, though I haven't seen the film I was told it was quite the spectacle.

That's refreshing anyway, in a sense.

Again it's nice to see Coraline nominated for best animated film somewhere; insofar that it's not totally forgotten. Selick's movie doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning but meh.

I don't know, I recall this guy with pointy ears... ;)

But you're right, the innumerable Vulcans and Romulans in the film aren't going to push this over the edge. I think if any sci-fi film wins this category it'll be District 9.

Having seen 2012 (unfortunately), I wouldn't even give it a nomination.
Some of it's effects were good but I couldn't believe my eyes at how bad overall the vfx were for a movie of that budget and for a movie that the vfx were the main attraction.

Transformers, District 9 and Star Trek are waaaaay ahead of it.
