That's why they call it the blues (Paths of Disharmony SPOILERS)

Deranged Nasat

Well, hello, I'm back.

However, I seem to have entered an alternate universe because - against all logic - I appear to have received "Paths of Disharmony" incredibly early, as opposed to a month and a half after the rest of you as is usual. I had no idea it was out yet. I wasn't expecting it when I saw it sitting there in my local Forbidden Planet, having arrived mere hours before I did.

No-one here seems to have started a discussion on it, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to gleefully dance about knowing spoilers rather than trailing in after everyone else :p.

So, my fearful prediction turned out to be true - quite a twist, and an effective one. It's a genuine shock to see it happen, but it's completely believable given the chain of events that Andor's suffered through. One of the real strengths of this novel was the continuity - without falling into the trap of dull recapping (or at least it didn't seem to from my perspective), it effectively built on the established politics and events from the Deep Space Nine Relaunch and the rest of the "mainstream" line. Bonus points for the Vanguard angle. Really, for a reader like me this was fantastic - elements from four series (DS9 relaunch, TNG relaunch, Vanguard, Destiny), were smoothly linked together in a logical way to deliver a story that effectively gave the Typhon Pact series its "big shocker". This is the sort of ongoing, inclusive narrative that I prefer in Trek lit - and the novel didn't "try too hard" either; it built on the previous stories without overplaying it and without forgetting to tell its own story. A strong conclusion to the Typhon Pact series.

PS: So, "Andor's Folly" was essentially written in the end after all! In the acknowledgements, Dayton Ward said you gave the text a Beta read, Therin. You knew about this!

Oh, hell. They actually did it? :( Looks like there's no turning back now.

A FOUNDING member of the Federation leaves? The Typhon Pact must be laughing their asses off. What a coup this must be for them. To say nothing about the hit the Federation's image is going to take amongst those worlds who aren't affiliated with either. If a founding member world leaves, the entire Federation is at risk - nothing is safe.

:sigh: Maybe all of those 'fall of the Federation' rumors might turn out to have some truth to them?

Thanks for saving me the cost of the book.

Well, I thought it was very well played. I mean, the Visionist Party has been wanting to pull out since "Paradigm", and that was before the string of terrorist attacks in Corps of Engineers (which showed that extremism was on the rise there), five more years of the genetic research going nowhere, the Borg traumatizing the whole planet and then the (non-literal ;)) bomb that's dropped on them here. So I thought it made perfect sense, even if it was a shock.

I would say it's a believable development, not some sort of knee-jerk "let's make things tough for the Federation" move. Like I said, one of the things I really liked about this one was how it neatly built on everything that's come before - the decision was shocking, but it was a logical if unfortunate development and not an (if you'll excuse the expression) "out of the blue" move.

Anyway, it's not like Andor has completely turned away - a small majority voted in favour of leaving, so a large minority would have preferred not to.

Okay, if we're allowed to post spoilers in this one:

If the new government does end up having close ties to the Pact, this might end up being a productive thing for the Federation - Andor might even end up a "bridge" between them? At least it would likely help reign in any factions of the Pact wanting to make war on the Federation (I doubt the majority of Andorians would stand for that, current hurt aside)?

Yep, they did it. :( Andor slipped through, sadly. Of course, it's the events of this novel that push their new government out. I suppose after Alpha Centauri stayed, Zalda stayed, Bolarus stayed, and they and a whole bunch of other member worlds reaffirmed the Declarations as a show of support, this is the "one step back" to that "two steps forward".

Just edited the title of the thread a bit to indicate spoilers.

Thanks! :)

I'm not going to read plot spoilers, because I'm looking forward to reading this, but could you answer a deeply important and vital question - does the Picard sprog have a name yet?

The fate of the universe (or at least a £5 bet) depends upon it.

Wow this is quite the development indeed. So far my library only has Zero Sum Game in so I'm still waiting for the two others and this to come in.

Yes, he does. :p

Okay, okay, it's
René
. Name only under there - no plot details.

Is the universe safe? :)

Thanks a million :)

The universe is safe. And I was right. Though not gladly so. I really, really, really, really, really hoped I was going to be wrong on that. (My enormous winnings will ease the blow a little. ;))

Ok, I haven't read any of the other TP books yet...but this ones got me really interested.

Is it absolutely necessary to read the other books first...or can I just grab this one first?

I received mine from amazon.ca on January 17th. It was a preorder. Amazon doesn't like to keep things on hand, apparently.

I must say Dayton has some daring and balls to write the plot twists he did.

Gah, it's not available for the Nook yet, I know I'll be checking every day now.
Just out of curiosity, did Kadohata come back, or was she replaced?

Well at least the planet wasn't destroyed, so there's that

It'll be available next Tuesday, the street date.

I hope so. I'm a little nervous though, because the other three were all available for pre-order, but PoD isn't.
