The biggest difference would be that the independent-again Andorian Imperial State, unlike the Socialist Republic of Cuba, is a democracy with strong pro-Federation currents in the population. Even with the new disenchantment, these people and many of the anti-Federatino factions would still be opposed to a radical realignment. The ambassador told Bacco that the Andorians weren't interested in cutting off ties with the Federation, just exploring the idea of more pragmatic ties with all.

Presumably there'd be all sorts of overt and covert support for anti-Typhon Pact factions in Andor.

^ So Federation citizens are still allowed on Andor itself, then?

Yup. They haven't become the Federation's enemy or anything, they've just decided to go independent.

I'd be interested to know what the Vulcans think of sexuality among Romulans and other Vulcanoids, populations sharing in Vulcan sexual biology but not Vulcan sexual morality.

This has been kinda covered in the licensed novels involving Saavik (esp. ST II novelization and "The Pandora Principal") and Soleta ("New Frontier).

Hmm. Well, that's something, anyway. I thought I heard somebody say that the ambassador had asked for all Federates to leave Andorian territory (I almost said Andorian "space", but do they even have any?). If not, there's still some hope.

Again, probably nothing. The Vulcans would be the last to think that any other race should act like them simply because they LOOK like them. That would be the height of illogic.

I'd say so--I took "Andor" to be shorthand for the "Andorian state". The Andorian state did include offworld territories--the Borg-devastated colony world of Alrond, maybe?--at the time that it joined the Coalition of Planets and there's no obvious reason why it would have been forced to give those up.

But Vulcan logic isn't complete so far as the Vulcans who rejected the norms established by/after Surak go.

On p. 435, the Andorian ambassador says that "all Federation and Starfleet personnel will be expelled from the planet," but two paragraphs later he elaborates that "Any non-Andorian civilians will be allowed to stay, if they so desire." So presumably by "Federation personnel," he meant employees of the UFP government rather than UFP citizens in general. And he probably just meant that any UFP offices and resources would be removed from Andor as part of the process of divorcing Andor's government from the UFP government; they'll probably still allow the Federation to send ambassadors and the like.

Just finished it. It was pretty good. Started off rather slow but good more interesting by the end. I knew going into it from reading later books that the Andorians leave the Federation but I did not know why. The reason they give is fine but it does seem a tad naive to blame to Federation from withholding information that only a handful even knew about and the chances of them even thinking that it could be useful to them slim.
Hopefully something terrible happens to them and they beg to be let back in. :)
I did find it funny how much restraint Worf has when that mad Andorian threatened to blow up the Enterprise. Worf should have said to him that threatening to blow up the Enterprise is a very bad idea and the consequences of doing this will be far worse than what the Borg did to them.
So is that female Andorian still onboard the Enterprise or did she leave? It said the other chap resigned but I don’t remember what happened to her.
