Husband is off work due to medical leave and is working his way through Voyager. During the TNG rewatch a few months ago I begged him NOT to watch Sub Rosa. This time I begged him NOT to watch Threshold. I told him to watch it on his computer if he was really curious about it but if he watched it now on the big TV I would have to leave the room...I even blabbed about it not being canon, the writer disavowed it, the science was wackier than usual and the cast basically said 'What the hell?' about the script.

He said ok...and then told me that I knew way to much about 'this stuff'.

Threshold is canon. In fact, Threshold is a cannon. A cannon of awesome-sauce.

Who doesn't like an episode where a character pulls his own tongue out? Crazy people, that's who. It's camp genius that Star Treks the shit out of TV.

The science? Simple. People mistakenly believe that Tom reached warp 10. No, no, no. The moment he reaches warp 10, something happens that propels the Flyer to warp 50 and that's when you turn into a warp-salamander. It all makes sense.

Threshold is called threshold because Trek couldn't go any further into televisual brilliance.

I liked it when Kim called Neelix stupid.

:)

Of course, Kim is the real fool, if he ever accepted food that Neelix "specially" prepared for him ever again.

Threshold makes no sense to me.

They reach warp 10, but hitting that speed causes them to evolve into salamader-esque humans. But once Janeway and Paris are brought back to the ship the EMH restores them without a problem.

Why didn't they put all the crew, excepted maybe one human pilot, into stasis engage warp 10 to get home, then have the EMH restore the pilot (unless they were willing to undergo further testing to see what the evolutionary path of humans would result in).

That way they get home, they can put Starfleet scientists to work to figure out a way of protecting the crew, then they'd have instantaneous travel at their disposal.

They couldn't steer.

The experiment we saw that Tom was doing was to turn the engine on, turn it off, and then see how far he had gone and in which direction.

I think they were using new/rare/unreplicatable dilithium with a very short half life?

PARIS: We discovered a new form of dilithium in the asteroid field we surveyed last month. It remains stable at a much higher warp frequency.
KIM: The problem is, every time we simulate crossing the transwarp threshold, the nacelles get torn off the ship.
NEELIX: I remember there was a time when I lost a warp nacelle going through a dark matter nebula.
Close enough.

There was a very small window in which this technology was available, not that dilithium is fuel anyhows. It's a focussing measure for the matter antimatter reaction which makes warp speed possible.

Yes, Threshold was a stretch (to put it politely), but one must watch every episode in order - even the stinkers!

I am, however, very much looking forward to the day humanity evolves into lizard creatures in real-life. I hope to still be around to see that day, assuming the nukes (that will ultimately lead to humanity's transformation into lizard creatures in real-life) don't kill me first.

TOS went to warp 11.

TNG (All good things) went to warp 13.

Stop picking on Voyager.

Stop it!

I've always enjoyed threshold.

I wish I could. There have been other 'hated' episodes that I rather liked (and vice versa 'loved' episodes that I can't stand).

I try again and again to watch it and manage to make it to the point where Paris dies and I just can't go on....

Although it seems fans are coming to terms with the lizard babies.

Threshold is many things, but at least it isn't offensively boring.

^This.

I'll watch Threshold any time over an 'evil alien of the week' ep that is so mediocre that it's headache-inducing.

Threshold may perhaps be appalingly bad; at least it isn't so average it's boring.

Snakes and Reptiles have two penises.

Amphibians need to remain coupled for 3 hours for conception to take.

What exactly were they?

What exactly where they?

A captain and a helm officer.

I take a special kind of configuration to make those two fit together

Well, I for one, welcome our new lizard overlords ;)

And it's not so much the coming to terms with it, as I just don't take it seriously. After he coughs up his own tongue, yeah, that's a wacky weirdness that I no longer take seriously.

Hubby or not, Newbies shouldn't be granted any special privileges. They should have to suffer through the bad ones just like we did.

I'm a big believer that suffering through the bad ones helps us appreciate the good ones (the mountains look grandest from the valley).

Plus, I've guided friends through Trek before and I never presumed to know which episodes they would or wouldn't like. BECAUSE IT'S ALL CANON.

He has complete freedom to watch it himself...on his computer. While wearing headphones. Our daughter came for a visit and I simply mentioned the episode. She remembered it and was overcome by a fit of uncontrollable laughter so that might have piqued his interest.

Well, if you hear him having fits of laughter, you will understand.

Personally, I give each Trek series a complete run through first, because I enjoy so many episodes that other's do not. Anything with Captain Proton in it is a personal favorite of mine, from the VOY side of things.

Also, if nothing else, just have him watch SFDebris review of Threshold. That should satisfy the curiosity ;)
