That Look on Sisko's Face

Photon

Commodore
Commodore
in the escape pod at the USS Saratoga blows up (reflection) is really painful. I stopped the paused the DVD and just stared at that look for a minute and wondered what would I think if all that had happened to me.

Later, Sisko crying over finally coming to grips w/his wife's death-let me know quick this was gonna be a different Trek series.

I would venture to say that Brooks was just as strong an actor as Stewart at his best. The man doesn't get the respect he deserves.

Agreed.

I think most folks misinterpret his more subtle acting as being "wooden". Brooks is one of the best actors to ever grace ST, IMO.

Quite. It annoys me when people say he was too subdued and depressed and insular in the early seasons. Of course he was - that's the character he was playing.

At the risk of opening a can of worms, the same equally baseless complaints were made about Michael O'Hare in s1 Babylon 5.

He looks a bit too serene to me in that scene (as the ship pulls away from the exploding Saratoga). I could be wrong, but I think that's the director's call as much (if not more) than the actor's call.

In any event, it was a great pilot :)

To me he didn't seem serene as much as almost catatonic with grief. After he makes sure Jake's okay he just... turns off. It felt really realistic to me.

I love how The character becomes the man when in the 3rd series (I think) he appears with a goatee beard!! V funny yet v apt.

I've never thought of the connection before, but yeah - and I never got all the griping about O'Hare, either.

I think people found it difficult to accept a different style of commander/captain compared to Picard and even Kirk. The first meeting between Picard and Sisko really showed what anger and grief Sisko carried around with him day to day, I found that scene difficult to watch because of it's intensity.

You are ABSOLUTELY correct, IMO.

Sadly many people had complaints about O'Hare but I for one think that Sinclair was a much more interesting character and unusual lead character than Sheridan.

I also preferred O'Hare's performance in comparison to Bruce Boxleitner's.

I liked that he had that look, and i think he had it on a few occasions thru out the first few seasons. I like that he seemed stiff in alot of scenes from him talking to even walking, it made me appreciate it all the more when he would crack a smile or get excited. To me he finally loosed up when he gave Worf the speech about leaving Starfleet and it not being the answer, I know the character came around before that point. However, when he told Worf that by throwing away the uniform you think you can throw away all the pain and guilt, but it just doesn't work that way. For me, when he said that out loud to someone else, it meant that Sisko finally nailed the coffin shut on that part of his life. The bald head and goatee from "Hawk" didn't hurt either.

His breakdown in Far Beyond The Stars had me crying. That wasn't Avery Brooks anymore. That was Benny.
As a character I loved Sisko. The way Brooks portrayed him made it believable. He's the only Trek captain we've seen evolve as a character.
Just one of the many reasons I love DS9.

He does angst so well! I much prefer him over Picard any day! But I have enjoyed Patrick Stewart in other roles, but, I prefer Sisko.
