That awesome opening scene

Okay, I scanned the first few pages, didn't find anything. Feel free to merge this with a pre-existing thread if it exists.

But how about that opening scene! They could have made an entire movie based on the Kelvin! I have never cried 10 minutes into a movie before, but that opening was heart-wrenching!

It was definitely an awesome way to start the film. For two actors that didn't even share screentime together, I certainly felt for Kirk's parents. They were fantastic.

Magnificent. When that music started and the credits with the huge STAR TREK logo appeared, I felt shivers all up and down my spine. I breathed out loud "It's finally happening. This is it!"

Amazing.

Yeah. Although I did not like the movie as a whole, the opening scene was one of the best scenes I've seen in a scifi movie. It was very, very, very impressive.

It was exceptional...watching the surviving shuttles fleeing the battlefield was heart-wrenching & forlorn.... :(

Only thing I would change would be a steadier camera on the battle scenes....why cinematographers think they have to make you seasick during a battle scene is beyond me.... :scream:

The opening scene was absolutely brilliant, fantastic and awesome. It sucked you right into the movie like no movie has done for ages.

As I said elsewhere, the opening is the one-two that makes a classic movie (like LotR) - the intimate and personal moments in the midst of epic scenes.

The first ten minutes was absolutely amazing; that ship, the music, the heart-break, I'd love that to have been stretched out to be the whole film. Excellent!

That opening sequence, leading up to and including the title, is incredible. Damned near perfect.

Among its more minor achievements is that it convinces one for the first time in ages that these are people aboard a huge advanced spacecraft far, far out in the reaches of the galaxy rather than actors on a soundstage.

Yes, that's one thing about this film that, although relatively minor, is to me a huge enhancement - the feeling of scale from the bridge shots - the sound work I think was a factor in this - :bolian:

I'm another one who LOVED the opening sequence. It was brilliant and I want to see the movie again just to see those opening ten minutes.

I think i held my breath through the whole scene. I was amazed and a touch emotional. And the old sound effects and Winona's TOS communicator really brought it to the past. It was awesome. I only wish we could have seen more Kelvin and George Kirk

Agreed... I immediately was captivated by the first few seconds of the opening... which i could not believe, after seeing what utter shit and rubbish Cloverfield was... I could not believe JJ had actually gotten something right... that's right, JJ... the idea of the opening of a film is to HOOK your audience.

By the time the OPENING credits stopped in Cloverfield, I already knew I hated the movie more than any other I have ever seen in my life, and the rest of the 2 hours only added to my dismay. The opening sequence lasted WAAAAYYY too long, NONE of the characters made me care for them in any way at all, and the story ( if any) blew platypus ass.

That's why I was so shocked when I first saw the Kelvin and her crew... I could not believe that I was actually being drawn into the scene, and that I instantly cared about the characters.

JJ... USE what you have learned here... DON'T make another piece of stinking shit like Cloverfield... ever again! THIS is how you open a film!

Kirk hearing the first sounds of his son while he is about to ram an enemy vessel so the son, his mom and 800 others can escape nearly broke my heart.

I've seen many brilliant and moving death scenes, e.g. Boromir's death in LOTR but this one ranks way up there with the best.

It was the perfect opening.. the music, the mindblowing action and amidst this the heartwrenching destruction of a family.

I always thought Abrams was a good director in a way that he knows what he wants to achieve and then especially knows how to go about to make that happen but with this opening alone he knocked it out of the stadium.

What's even more amazing is that the rest of the movie can keep pace with it though on a different level but this opening will always be one of the best any movie ever had.

IT was stunning, and ultimately heart-wrenching. Hats off to the guy who played George, he did quite a bit with a small part.

Check out IMDB. George Kirk was played by Chris Hemsworth, an Australian, who appears to have been a semi-regular on one of our soapies.

Cheers

Sorry to bring up a week-long dormant thread, but I just came across it for the first time.

Absolutely agreed on all counts.

As much as I loved the movie, the opening was probably my favorite part; it was absolutely brilliant. As others have put it, the mind-blowing action, the drama, the heartbreak, the effects, the MUSIC, everything were nothing short of spectacular.

Absolutely riveting... emotional... I could've done without the metallic Star Trek logo, but the substance and execution were flawless.

I remember the opening sequence from Star Trek: First Contact, which had been my favorite up to now... also very inventive.

But not nearly as emotionally wrenching.

One of the best spaceship scenes ever, period.

One of the "purists" said on another thread that the first 10 minutes was enough to convince him this movie was terrible.:lol::lol::lol:!!!!

I just want to say that Abrams was just a producer on Cloverfield. He didn't write it or direct it.

Wow. There really, truly, is no pleasing some of them. You could dig up a previously buried, unreleased, authentic episode of TOS from the first season, and they'd still hate it.
