McCoy: We were just speculating, is God really out there?

KIRK: Maybe He's not out there Bones. Maybe He's right here... in the human heart.

 

[LeadHead]

Kirk: Spock?

 

[CoveTom]

SPOCK: I was thinking of Sybok. I've lost a brother.

 

[LeadHead]

Kirk: Yes, I lost a brother once. I was lucky I got him back.

 

[CoveTom]

MCCOY: I thought you said men like us don't have families...

 

[LeadHead]

Kirk: I was wrong.

 

[CoveTom]

KIRK: Are you just gonna sit there and pluck that thing, or are you gonna play something?

 

[LeadHead]

Kirk: Row, Row, Row your boat gently down the stream...

 

[CoveTom]

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy sing 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat' together and we pull back to the ending credits...

Kirk: Yes, I lost a brother once. I was lucky I got him back.

One thing that always bothered me about this line: What about Sam?

I never liked that, either. When he said "I lost a brother once", I thought he was empathizing with Spock. Then the next line just totally disrespected the memory of his brother.

They probably didn't think about it when they wrote the script. The comic adaptation which I have somewhere, has Kirk say "I've lost two brothers in my time, but I was lucky to get one of them back."
