Terminator Terminated

I think we can all agree that the Crazy Sarah arc that started with the episode before the hiatus/break and went on for another 3 episodes after the break was the final straw.

I don't think we all agree that. It wasn't the best thing the show did, but there was no "final straw". People just didn't watch it because...well... from my perspective because they were idiots... but that seems a little bit unfair...

Terminator was one of those shows that I respected more than actually really enjoyed. It had its moments, and that last episode was fantastic, but it never really completely pulled me in. I think the unrelenting bleakness might have had something to do with that. Still, I like that they tried to do more than a Terminator-of-the-week that, as some here have suggested, might have made it more of a sure thing in the ratings. Instead it always went for the risky story telling, the deeper psychological and experimental stuff, sometimes failing spectacularly, but always trying. We need more network shows like that.

That arc was badly mistimed though, not to mention horribly written and executed, but you dont put those episodes out at the time in the season that they did, coming back from a mid season break, in a new, not great time slot to begin with.

Someone above said the show should have been a "balls to the wall action show" from the start. Damn straight (though I liked Cromartie, who that poster didnt), and if it had have been, we would be discussing a thrid season now, I am sure.

It wasn't a great arc, no, but I honestly don't think the timing made the slightest bit of difference. People usually give a show they once liked the benefit of a few episodes before giving up on it. If they were wavouring before that arc, then the show wasn't for them anyway, and they would never have been regular viewers.

As for it being "balls to the wall action" I'm sure I'd have loved that, as I'm sure more people would have done, but they could never have done that - at least, not in a way to rival the movies. Before the show started there were tons of posters on here saying "It's just going to be like Smallville - a Terminator of the week - it's going to be stupid." Well we didn't get that - we got something that tried to be different - and now it's "boring" because it's not "balls to the wall action". I really think it would have been stretching plot and believability to put the Connors in harms way every single week, not to mention requiring more reset buttons than we're normally comfortable with.

Again, as I've said earlier in the Terminator threads, the show was never intended to be only an action show. The producers and stars all said in interviews that the show was designed to be a family drama first, just with robots trying to kill the family.

To me that seems like the strangest branding decision ever. It's basically gutting a franchise. You don't take something like Terminator and say, "Hey, let's make this a family drama!" That's just stupid, and further proof that they should've just done their own show with an original idea instead of using the Terminator brand as a crutch.

Also, just because it's not "balls to the wall action" doesn't mean it has to be boring.

They did well with the human enemies, the criminals, the police, Kaliba. The problem lies in that they tried to have John and Sarah maintain some sort of code against killing as best as they could, thus episodes that could have been action fests were instead boring.
The didn't use their enemies well enough because they wanted to maintain an untenable moral perspective.

Clearly a lot of people didn't find it boring. I know I didn't. Unfortunately I do agree that the general public probably didn't get what they expected out of a show called "Terminator". Personally I think itwas more interesting than the movies, and I can't work up the enthusiasm for "Salvation" at all because of it's cancellation.

ditto. Except I was lacking any enthusiasm for Salvation long before the show was doomed.

I really tried to like the show but this season just came across as meandering. It did pick up at the end of the season, but too little too late.

Obviously not enough to keep the show afloat. And by "boring" I just mean not interesting. Everyone that I know (who isn't a nerd on a bbs like me) just isn't captivated by the show for one reason or another. I wouldn't say it's because they're idiots...

CLEARLY those that did really, really enjoy the show aren't enough to be considered A LOT.
Its drop from premiere of 18million to its close of around 3million shows that CLEARLY A LOT of people(a number of 15m) is more swaying than that tiny minority.
I've seen Salvation and its better than any string of episodes I saw. Better acted. Better affects. Better story.
I'll be seeing Salvation again as a paying customer next time. When I could watch TSCC for free and wouldn't that is what CLEARLY speaks about the show.

This and "My Name is Earl" both cancelled and LOST in it's last year.

Looks like I don't have any reason to watch network TV anymore.

Didn't say there were enough people to make it a financial success... why argue that? It's clearly untrue. I just meant that plenty of people did like it, but since we all know that ratings are an unassailable arbiter of quality, I guess I'll shut up and go watch Season 5 of Firefly.

QFT. I again iterate, without getting scifi-ey, Bun Notice is the best thing on TV right now. Its fast, has a definitive arc every season, interesting to the teeth and a great chemistry of the cast. None of the characters are emo jackasses, even Michael Weston whose entire world basically collided around him. That's the kind of strong characters that make for interesting TV, not the emo assholes from TSCC or NuBSG. Make for a fun show that is entertaining and people will watch it, ON TV, and the producers/stars won't have to beg the fans to not watch it online.

The fans have not given up hope:

This time (same time as TSCC used to air) on Friday there is a fan meet at scifi.com forums.

I can't believe I'm saying this but let it go. Friedman has already said that they're not going to move it to a new network so move on.

I think most people have let it go, but if by some extreme miracle the show returns, we'll know who to thank. :)

Thanks for the imput! It is true, there are other television shows that I might enjoy. Burn Notice is one of them, and I do intend to check it out. Terminator was also a show I enjoyed. These facts have nothing to do with one another.
