"Tenet" - 2020.. Nolan's new mindbender

Yeah. They could have done a better job bringing him into the organisation
Saw the movie myself today. Honestly, underwhelmed. Mostly, it's just really confusing. Kind of feels like being dropped right in the middle of a sequel to a movie I hadn't seen, which might have been intentional, to replicate the feeling of the main character being deposited into a weird and confusing world of time travel and associated effects. But it creates a kind of off-putting viewing experience, IMO.

In some ways it's kind of a Doctor Who parallel at the end, with the main character (who is referred to as nothing else but "the Protagonist" in the movie) as the Doctor and Robert Pattinson's character as River Song.
Yeah, it’s very Ricer Song. Especially as you see him die at the beginning. Taking a bullet to save the lead. Something I didn’t even notice but my sister did.

I keep seeing complaints about the sound mix. That's most unfortunate. You would have thought that Nolan and his crew would have learned something from the past few movies of theirs that had this exact same problem.

I think I remember an interview about The Dark Knight Rises in which Nolan said he didn't think it was necessary for the audience to understand every word the characters said. Like, it was more about how they said it, or about the overall acoustic ambience of the scene, or something. So I don't think it happens by accident.

Well in that case what’s the point of giving them lines? Might as well just have him grunt

I was about to say "don't get corona" but you're in New Zealand, so you're good. Lucky. :) Is your lockdown all over from that small reemergence?

The lockdown is effectively still in place (adapted / eased somewhat) in Auckland, so still not out of the proverbially woods yet, in regards to the re-emergence - however where I’m based in the capital city Wellington, is not immediately affected by what is happening in Auckland (up north).

Watching that space!

Looks like they were serious about not releasing this in drive-ins. That. Is. Insane. Well guess it'll be blu ray in 6 months for me then. Sad, since the film was filmed in IMAX, but oh well.

That Nolan would support that movie in a time of pandemic actually really turns me off him as a director to the point where I will really consider paying to watch any of his movies again.

Who said Nolan had anything to do with it?

He definitely argued for it being seen in the theatre--and we have not heard him speak out against it yet. I'll not pass judgment quite yet--we have a couple of years to wait for his next film.

Is the title perhaps taken from the early Christian acrostic:

ROTAS
OPERA
TENET
AREPO
SATOR

ETA: This is an anagram of PaterNoster twice over if the central N is crossed plus 2 extra A(lpha)s and O(mega)s?

Besides meaning "belief" in English, tenet is Latin for "he/she/it holds".

ROTAS is the name of a company in the movie.
OPERA is the opening act of the movie
TENET besides being the title it's a codeword
AREPO I missed that
SATOR It's Branaghs charater name.

It was the first thing I thought of when I heard what the movie was called. Of course, Nolan's schtick, sorry trademark, is messing with time and space.

It's not completely banned from drive ins, it can open in drive ins as long as regular theaters are open in the area. Which isn't really that helpful, since most of people wanting it in a drive-ins are the people in areas where the regular theaters aren't open.

Well a single theater opened in San Diego, and I am in L.A. 120 miles away. So does that mean that drive-ins can get it? lol
