"Tenet" - 2020.. Nolan's new mindbender

It happens all the time in the UK. They get away with not calling it censorship because the studios will go, "If we have this scene in the film what rating would we get?" before officially submitting it for classification.

It's self-censorship to avoid a rating.

That happens with a lot of American movies to adjust the U.S. rating as well. The cut scenes are often restored in the DVD or perhaps streaming.

It's greed to get a lower rating and more money. There's no mainstream film that could not get released completely uncut if the studios cared more about the work than the money.
....why would they do that? They are not high minded art collectives releasing movies for the edification of the population and the advancement of the art form. They are multi national corporations beholden to their board of directors and stockholders. Their job is to bring in the most return possible for a given investment.

And that's not even necessarily a bad thing. Why shouldn't a teen be able to see your movie if you could have just cut one little scene and made it more accessible...

I have seen every Nolan film since Memento (with the exception of Insomnia I just realized) and the only two I've seen at the cinema have been Memento (second run/art theatre) and Batman Begins. I've enjoyed them all, and I am sure they were visually spectacular on the Big Screen--but this insistence that Tenet has to be released that way and seen that way just reeks of hubris.

Final trailer

I'm afraid the song choice made it almost unwatchable for me. For some reason, that autotuning effect that makes voices sound "robotic" like that is agonizing to me, like nails on a chalkboard only worse. I don't know why, but I literally can't stand the sound of it. No matter how hard I try, I never get used to it and I'm in full-bore "AAAAAA MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP" mode every time I hear it. I wish I were exaggerating, but I'm not. I wish I understood why the sound does that to me. To some extent it's the cognitive dissonance -- a human voice just should not sound like that -- but that hardly seems like enough.

I agree, that song did not work at all for that trailer.

^It's not an aesthetic objection to the song, per se. It's not my style of music, but I wouldn't mind it that much if not for that autotuned voice treatment, which is torture for me, heaven knows why.

I love Nolan trailers - they're fascinating, no one understands a thing what's actually happening much less getting any useful info what the movie is about but when you are in the actual theater and have seen it your mind is completely blown by the story and execution

Nolan is one of the few directors who is still capable of making absolutely original and unpredictable stories that keep you glued to the screen - thank god Hollywood didn't manage to kill all the creativity.

I think I'm getting a sense of what the story is about.
It seems like there's a devastating war in the future that somehow sends a ripple effect back through time, so people in the present get forewarning of it and are trying to reconstruct how it happens from the reverse clues they're getting, and to use the reversal effect to prevent it before it starts.

We'll see how close my guess is.

Thanks for that. I can't say I enjoyed that music, but at least it didn't hurt to listen to.

I think I might be more interested in seeing an extended making-of special than I am in the movie itself. I'm curious how many of the time-reversal gags are done with actual reverse filming composited with forward filming, and how many are pure CGI. Probably quite a lot of the latter, though I'd guess they filmed the gags practically to see how they'd look when run backward, then recreated that digitally in scenes with the actors moving forward.

LOL it's like playing with matchbox cars

Yeah I want to see the technicalities of filming scenes backwards like the car chase

In my area only drive-in theaters are open. The closest one is over an hour away. I guess I'll have to clean my windshield better than usual before heading out to see this.
