tell me agan why I bother keeping Syfy?

Only thing I give them props for is getting Doctor Who. But even then the bastards had to cut up the episodes.

Well, don't know about him, but I get Phone, TV, and Internet services all through one cable provider and it's over a hundred dollars per month which is actually far cheaper than getting them separately around here so believe it or not it's a deal.
Strangely, in my area, the phone company provides faster speeds than the cable company.

I agree all 3 together cost >=$100. My point was that the marginal cost of cable TV on top of the high speed internet is much less than the $110 he quoted.

Companies can and will charge you out the ass if they can get away with it, and people will pay that unreasonable amount if they want the connection and have no cheaper recourse. It's called a monopoly. Maybe, like here, there is only one service provider offering a decent and reliable high speed connection and it's either that or 56k Dial up. Sadly it's the way of things. :(

Agreed. Some of these companies completely abuse their monopolies. But again, I have still never seen a cable company charge $110 just for basic digital cable, and definitely not an extra $110 on top of what they charge for internet access.

the happy days of BSG seasons 1 and 2's "Scifi Friday" are long gone: when we had a three hour lineup with an overture to BSG of SG-1 and SG: Atlantis followed by good BSG

even if you didn't hate the last 2 seasons of BSG, it's over now.

Normally when Scifi got rid of an old flagship series there was at least some overlap: first they had Farscape, but then switched to SG-1; but at least they had already been airing SG-1

Similarly, SG-1's dominance transitioned to BSG (and Atlantis)

Now both BSG and Atlantis finished at the same time.

It's not a transition but a clear break (particularly notable in that they changed their name to "SyFy")

Though tonally, its still the same crappy shows most of the time.

I don't like Eureka, I hated it since the pilot.

I don't like Warehouse 13.

"Stargate Universe" looks like an awful BSG ripoff

"Caprica" looks like the "Star Trek: Enterprise" of the BSG franchise

as for other networks...some of you may be watching "Flash Foward", I won't.

I haven't followed Lost, it's ending soon anyway.

I gave up on Heroes after suffering through season 2 and the start of season 3.

I liked Jericho and Kings but they were canceled.

the only other good stuff is ironically on Fox:

I loved Terminator but it got canceled.

They still have Fringe and Dollhouse though.

Who's had thought that *Fox* of all places would dominate science fiction TV?

But while I watch them...it's not the same "whole other world to get sucked into" with Fringe/Dollhouse as with BSG or Trek

the new V series seems like its at least worth checking out

otherwise, the only good scifi to look foward to is Venture Bros season 4

****we've actually been suffering from the Writer's Guild Strike for a long time, first on TV then movies this summer.

We're finally past that.

I hope Fall movies will be better but I'm really not looking to TV for good scifi.

"9" opens soon I'm hoping for that: "Avatar" in December...looks lackluster the more I see of it.

People that recognized that the only reason Fox got a bad reputation for canceling Sci Fi shows was because Fox was the only network consistently trying new Sci Fi shows.

I only watched Sci Fi when BSG was on and I do enjoy the occasional direct to DVD horror movie they used to play. I pretty much watch it and if it looks pretty good I go rent the uncut version off of netflix.

Fox isn't dominating anything - Terminator is gone, Dollhouse is hanging on by its fingernails.

ABC looks to me like it's willing to experiment with sci-fi more than the other networks, with Defying Gravity (probably not long for this world), Flash Forward and V.

The real story is that sf/f is spread all over the place. Of the major networks, only CBS is turning up its nose at the genre but that's probably for the best due to their stultifying approach to TV. NBC is testing the waters with Day One but they're so shellshocked from one failure after another that most of their lineup is very conservative (and Day One looks like a conservative and conventional approach to sci fi judging from the previews). Basic and premium cable is getting seriously into sf/f, with interesting new shows lined up for AMC, TNT and HBO. Who needs Skiffy?

to clarify, by "who would have thought of Fox" I meant in relation to ABC or NBC...and yeah ABC is actually trying stuff this year

but yes I agree: the "Science Fiction Channel" once dreamed of my Isaac Asimov in 1991, has utterly failed its promise.

It's GONE.

And what do they try to compensate with?

"here's more bells and whistles! Here's more Technology news! Here's our Twitter feed! ***LOOK we changed our name to SyFy so you can use it in text messaging!"

I want *Science Fiction Television shows*. Why would I want to write blogs or texts about a show I don't like or watch?

"If you build it, they will come"

ANY of SciFi's attempts at modernizing have been half-as$ed: they make a messageboard, but don't bother to assign moderators so it gets filled with trolls and pron. Then they make all sorts of other things like flash games, texting...I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS:

I came for Battlestar....season 3 of BSG was godawful and the writers stopped interacting with us and RDM never updated his blog again; even if you liked it in the last 2 seasons ITS OVER

In 2005, I was in shock over Star Trek being cancelled with no future plans for a revival...then BSG season 1 came along and was so good, particularly compared to where Trek had fallen, that I was hooked.

*I literally thought BSG was the "Next Star Trek"*

It's not. It was the next Firefly or Farscape: a nice series that ends after a couple of years then we move on.

It's not "the next franchise", the story we liked in seasons 1 and 2 was a combination of a particular set of writers (who left by season 3, mostly), actors, and circumstances (right after Bush's re-election, Iraq War, etc....it felt like being PART OF SOMETHING to be watchin "Pegasus" in late 2005, it felt subversive)

All I can say is that I LOVED Abrams' new Trek movie, I LITERALLY would not have altered a single scene in any way whatsoever. Trek has come shifted back to movie-format (as it was in the 1980's)...and I think that means it has good chances of being a TV series again, one that lasts 7 seasons again.

But the dream of the Scifi Channel was gone: they had so much promise with Farscape:

I was so shocked when they mistreated Farscape season 4: I gave them a pass because then BSG was good:

but the Scifi Channel that made the two Dune miniseries is gone. The Scifi Channel that brought me Farscape and BSG is gone.

Adult Swim hasn't been doing great lately, but it's a recession, nonetheless: I've gotten better Scifi out of "Adult Swim" than these guys at Skiffy, lately.

I think Adult Swim will bounce back if the economy does.

But the "Scifi Channel" is a bunch of execs who wish they were on a "respectable" channel like "USA Network" and hate their jobs.

Screw it, I'm too busy with my PhD work, I'll have to marathon Fringe and Dollhouse over NEXT summer, 2 seasons each, I plan on watching the SGU pilot simply to hate it and drop it, watch "V" and hope its okay, and watch "Caprica" only to be able to hate on it with justification.

(sigh)

"You've got to keep a sense of perspective" -- Starship Troopers (novel) final chapter

-->We've got Star Trek back. In 2005 I thought that would be impossible. We've got Trek back.

And the fallout from the Writer's Strike is finally behind us.

But after multiple failures, and shows I don't like such as Flash Gordon, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary....and Battlestar post-season 2, I've learned never to trust the "Sci Fi Channel" again.

I've been questioning SciFi/SyFy's programming for at least a decade. It's been a subtle then not-so-subtle creep into more mainstream programming with abysmal sci fi and faux sci fi programming scattered in so they can keep claiming the title.

It has become slim-pickings for even finding substandard science fiction on their network for several years. You get obvious exceptions but I barely would count the 5-6 shows of genuine sci-fi against the 120+ hours of programming they show in a week.

You guys didn't like "Mega Shark versus Giant Octopus? I"m shocked! SHOCKED!

Scifi channel has become what drive-in movies were back in the twentieth century.

Shame Doctor Who has to be broadcast on SyFy (God! I hate it SO MUCH!) But as long as CrimeWarmer doesn't offer BBCA on our system...

The aforementioned movie was enjoyable because it was so incredibly and ineptly bad that my wife and I enjoyed it very much but it's a shame that such dreck represents what the network has become.

I saw the unedited version and it holds true to Asylum work in being unabashedly b-movie. At least it knew it was and still kept decent production values for that quality of movie. Other SyFy fare are usually bad b-movies that think they're better than what they are.

Where are you that you don't get BBCA on Time Warner? Not only do I get BBCA with Time Warner, but Time Warner is the first carrier in the country to offer BBCA-HD.

Or Creature Feature on the local UHF stations. Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus was one of the best B-Movies they've ever shown. :bolian:

Mine does. My bill last month was $137.

What did your $137 bill include? Internet access? Phone number? DVR? Premium channels? The question is, what do cable companies charge for just basic cable television.

We used to have it but then we didn't. Prolly to make room for another sports or shopping channel...
