Did anybody else hear the stories that some customers thought that DOS (Disk Operating System) should be pronounced "dose"?

So, ahem, why not "tose" or "toes"? ;)

No, seriously, I pronounce it T-O-S, as three syllables. And, T-N-G, D-S-9, and T-A-S (no, it's not "taz").

But, if it ever came up, I'd probably say "voy" and "ent" as single syllables, probably since those abbreviations are in fact the initial syllables of what they abbreviate, unlike the others.

Several interesting variations, indeed.

In my mind, it is "Toss."

I fully pronounce VOY and ENT as "Voyager" and "Enterprise" since they are just simple abbreviations for singular words. "Voy" and "Ent" just sound a little silly to me when I can just fill in the blanks.

The others are, of course, acronyms for multiple words, some with several syllables. And since TOS can be phonetically pronounced while the others make it difficult, I tend to go with "Toss" while TNG and DS9 are just born as new words in my mind: Tee-ehn-jee and Dee-ess-nine.

It is kind of like pronouncing NASA or NATO as words but FBI and IRS are more recognizable by remaining their initials.

The first time I ever heard "Tee Oh Ess" was just a few weeks ago, when a convention was in town and the local news was interviewing every costume goer they could. I heard some guy on TV say "Tee Oh Ess" and it took me a second to figure out what in the world he was talking about.

None of the above.

In writing, it's "TOS" and my internal filter pronounces it "TOSE" (long "O," hard "S," and silent "E").

When speaking, I never use the acronym -- it's just "the original series."

lets see according to my dad theres:

Star Trek, No The Old One With Kirk.

Star Trek, That's Picard,Right?

Deep Space Thingy

Janeway

Enterprise

Heh, I've taken to calling TNG "Phase 2," which it seems all it was. Data for Xon, Riker instead of Decker, Troi instead of Ilia, etc etc.

For me, when talking with someone about Star Trek, it's:

The Original Series.

Next Generation

DS9

Voyager

Enterprise

The Animated Series

Apart from DS9 all abbreviations are only used when writing on forums.

Being a British Trek fan I can see the funny side of being called a TOSser, a bit of a backhanded compliment, if you like.

*jealous*

I never get to talk to "gentiles" about Trek. I'm just a voice in the wilderness out here.

Toss

Tee Enn Gee

Dee Ess Nine

Voy

same here, that's how I read it in my head, but when speaking I usually expand it to: original series, next gen, and voyager

they said DS9 on the show itself, so it would be silly to say it any other way :D
