Ted Sullivan DSC Insights on Twitter

And to continue bludgeoning this dead horse, much of what is considered to be the TOS "asthetic" was based on the show's being produced in the 60's, including the color pallet, designed to attract color TV viewers, and the Fx, cause that was the best (60's) tech and budget allowed.
So if TOS colour palette is so 60's that it cannot be used today, why Kelvin films still have bright primary coloured uniforms?

If we're going to be truly pedantic about canon, the Starfleet uniforms wouldn't feature any red at all anyway. Why? Because Pike's crew in The Cage are technically the closest chronologically to DSC and they only had gold and blue uniforms. Get it? Gold and blue! Plus the boarding party uniforms were mostly blue with the asymmetrical lapel jackets. :P

When you look at what they used for the ENT uniforms and what the Cage uniforms were 110 years later, plus update it with 2017 design sensibilities and budget, there's a progression there that makes sense.

But, of course, the bottom line is that the Starfleet uniforms changed all the time, sometimes with no logic aside from meta concerns. Case in point: TOS to TMP. What the....?

24th century uniforms changed every 5 years or so with not every crew updating their uniforms as soon as new versions came out. a similar modus operandi for 23rd century starfleet makes sense

Discovery's division colours sort of match The Cage and WNMHGB colour wise, Gold for Command and Copper/Bronze for Operations. The only one off is sciences, but I think that's because they made the uniform blue.

I like the cut and tailoring of the uniforms, I would have preferred if they made the jackets colored. Hopefully they will bring the colored uniforms back. That's really the only visual quibble I have.

"We get it" also refers to those who are glad about the changes and brought it up in the first place. Both sides exist, and "Shut up!" won't make it go away.

But my point is that complaining about it and continuing to harp about it isn't productive. If your enjoyment of the series is dependent upon how it looks, the stop frigging watching. I don't know what possible productive purpose it serves to keep saying "BUT TEH SETS AND TEH UNIFORMZ IZ TEH WRONGGG!!!!" You are not going to see a sudden change in the sets and uniforms. So why continue to lament something that is an absolute?

See, the difference is that the asthetic change doesn't bother me...so it's all good.

Productivity...not exactly required for discussions 'round here. :)

It isn't, so I won't.

I didn't say that. Someone posted a quote from Sullivan, I replied to it. No one was histrionic, regardless of how exaggerated the otherwise flawless impersonation may be. ;)

It mostly doesn't bother me either. Doesn't mean I can't disagree with what Sullivan said.

No one said the TOS color pallete "cannot" be used today. My point is that the colors were used back in the day because of reasons that had more to do with the decade in which the show was produced than anything else.

Since this is no longer the 60's and everyone has color TV's, there is no longer a necessity to use vivid color to attract viewers. JJ made a choice. Perhaps he is more of a canonista than many would like to believe. ;)

Understood and fully agreed

That's the thing, they're not the same colors. Zach Quinto is not walking around in a baby blue zip up. It's a deep ocean blue. Bill Shatner's costume was actually green (“avocado-green-gold” specifically) in normal lighting. Chris Pine's is bright yellow.

This is what I call 'close enough.'
