Technology doesn't always work out..... Here's some fails

Ugh. I know what that's like. Yes, I correct to about 20/25, but without my glasses, I can't even read that big E on the eye chart. It would suck to have to deal with that all the time.

Generally if it's walking to the bus stop and such I can manage and do reasonably well with that as the bus stop is close and the bus usually fairly reliable, there's only one bus number so reading that isn't the issue not that I can until it's right on top of me.

But yeah the promise of self driving car or automated taxi thingy that would be awesome.

At the rate AI is progressing, I think it will reach the threshold needed for driving a car by 2030 or so. By 2035, I think the tech will be widespread enough for the mass market.

^ Yes, I think too they will eventually come.

With a lot of resistance from people who prefer to keep driving themselves, though.
As long as you allow the people who "Want to drive", to drive w/o AI assistance, I don't see the problem.

If you try to force AI Automated Driving on everybody by "Force / Legislation / Divine Power / Peer Pressure", then that's where we get into issues.

There are A LOT of people who want to force things on others instead of letting people decide for themselves if it's worth the risk to their own lives.

So many people blindly trusted Elon Musk on Tesla's AutoPilot safety and I never trusted his BS claims.

I'd rather trust my safety in my own hands.

That's because he was pushing the tech out way before it was ready.. With lots of BS claims too. It just wasn't ready and probably won't be ready for a while.

Whatever happened to Google's self driving cars that used real time and GPS data to travel?

I know, he was caught lying and people have come out and reported how he staged / faked those Auto-Pilot videos used to wow people over into buying Teslas.

Google's Waymo is still around, but they're still in the burning money phase and need Camera's + LIDAR + GPS to even work.

There's plenty of Backlash against Waymo still.

Backlash as in what?

In 2023, the San Francisco group Safe Street Rebel used a practice called "coning" to trap Waymo and Cruise cars with traffic cones as a form of protest after claiming that the cars had been involved in hundreds of incidents.[159] During the 2024 Lunar New Year in San Francisco Chinatown, a mob of vandals attacked, graffitied, and set fire to a Waymo car. No one was injured.[160][161] In 2024, passengers during a Waymo ride described an attack by an onlooker who attempted to cover the car's sensors.[162]

In 2024, the city attorney of San Francisco attempted to sue to prevent expansion of driverless vehicles including Waymo into San Francisco.[163] San Mateo County government soon after also sent a letter to regulators opposing expansion to its county.[164]

In May 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into potential flaws in Waymo vehicles, focusing on 31 incidents that included Waymo vehicles ramming into a closing gate, driving on the wrong side of the road, and at least 17 crashes or fires.[165]

In August of 2024, residents of San Francisco's SoMa district began to complain about noise pollution from Waymo vehicles honking at each other in a local parking lot. Residents reported that the car horns could be heard daily, with varying levels of activity, usually peaking at around 4 AM and during evening rush hour. The honking appears to have been triggered by the self-driving cars backing in and out of the lot.[166] The story caught attention after a resident began live streaming the cars with lofi hip hop music. Since then, Waymo Director of Product & Ops, Vishay Nihalani has appeared on the live stream to apologize and offer an explanation. Nihalani has assured locals that the honking will be fixed as further software updates are implemented.[167]
This is just the basics from Wikipedia.

There's definitely more out there.

California disclosure dispute
In January 2022, Waymo sued the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to prevent data on driverless crashes from being released to the public. Waymo maintained that such information constituted a trade secret.[190] According to The Los Angeles Times, the "topics Waymo wants to keep hidden include how it plans to handle driverless car emergencies, what it would do if a robot taxi started driving itself where it wasn't supposed to go, and what constraints there are on the car's ability to traverse San Francisco's tunnels, tight curves and steep hills."[191]

In February 2022, Waymo was successful in preventing the release of robotaxi safety records. A Waymo spokesperson affirmed that the company would be transparent about its safety record.[192]
Waymo has been trying to hide it's safety record data and refused to let the CA Government and the public see it in terms of transparency.
It's a on going battle for the public to see the true data since they have every intention to hide it.

Did the 1960's BatMobile have KITT as a AI to drive the vehicle and help out BatMan?

No but there was one episode where Batman called the car and it self drove to where he was, even obeyed traffic lights and stopped for pedestrians

I hate driving and I'm rubbish at it, it amazes me I get anywhere without killing anybody. A robot could do it better than me. I'm especially terrified by the other drivers on the road who appear to not realise they're also terrible at it. Conclusion: Driving is deadly dangerous no matter who or what is doing it.

I agree current AI is not mature enough yet to trust the technology for safe driving.

However, in 30 years' time (when AI is a lot further than it is today) this might be quite different and I could see governments outlawing people driving themselves by that time, on the basis of incontrovertible statistical evidence that AI driving _is_ safer (with the AI technology of that future era). But even in that scenario there probably will be people resisting that.
