Taylor Swift

well as far as some middle tennesseans are concerned she walks on water..
taylor swift donates 500,000 to middle tennessee flood relief effort.

Rather an unfortunate choice of words, walking on water? ;) Hope your part of the state's recovering.

That said, :techman: for her!

well, since i live in nashville lets say an ironic play with words.
;)

it is just hard to keep our sense of humor down.
i am fine and it is going to be a rough road for a lot of people.
but things like the story of the piranha stalking the mall made things a little easier to cope with.

In fact, I've yet to hear one that does.

The fact that she's won virtually every award possible this year in her field results from the same show biz herd mentality that gave Avatar the Oscar for Best Picture this year.

^ Hurt Locker. :)

And...?

You said Avatar. I don't know what awards Taylor Swift has won, but it ain't Hollywood herd mentality! Surely she can sing, write her own songs, and has a decent voice, not the best I've heard in country, but still decent. That's gotta count for something.

I will say, too, that I have no idea what about her music makes her "country." She's a pop singer.

I've wondered about that myself. Her musical style resembles mainstream pop, but some country artists (like Lee Ann Womack, Faith Hill, Shaniah Twang) have cross-genre performances. I guess whining about a boyfriend or relationship is a qualification. It's not like they need fiddle or guitar instrumentation in their songs.

I'm not sure Country as a genre really exists anymore.

I see variations on this statement almost every time that there is a discussion about country music on the internet. To me, it's like saying that rock and roll does not exist anymore because the new rock songs don't sound like Elvis Presley or Buddy Holly. The sounds will change over time, and this is natural. For me, country music is a combination of instrumentation, lyrical content, and performer personalities. I love Hank Williams, Sr., and Merle Haggard, but singers don't have to emulate their styles to be considered part of the country music scene.

Even if you want to say that Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, or someone else is too different to be classified as country music, so what? That's just a label. The real question is whether or not you like the music. Unsurprisingly, Taylor Swift is not universally beloved among the TrekBBS community. Like anyone, she has her mix of supporters and detractors.

By the way, listen to a CD from Alan Jackson, George Strait, Joe Nichols, Lee Ann Womack, Alison Krauss, or Brad Paisley, and tell me with a straight face that country music does not exist today.

I think country music, as a generalized genre has evolved to meet the demands/wants of the general populace. I grew up with my grandparents who listened to the Grand Ole Opry and country music from the 1940's. I know more songs from Tex Ritter and Al Dexter than I do from Taylor Swift or Shania Twain (who is now considered old school for some reason).

Thing is, country has always had this clash of 'traditional' vs. 'pop'. Remember rockabilly? How about Johnny Cash?

Even traditionalist singers have leaned what I like to term popcountry. Reba McEntire's relative new ones like "Strange" and "Consider Me Gone" are a far cry from "Whoever is in New England" or "You Lie". Heck, she went on tour with Kelly Clarkson! Dolly Parton, who has always been considered classic country (during my lifetime anyway) had crossover hits with "Islands in the Stream" and "9 to 5" in the 80's. I think you get what I'm trying to say here?

Once she has a few lessons from Hard Knocks, I think we'll find that she's a much better singer/song writer.

She's supposed to marry Ike Turner or Bobby Brown?

No, Tommy Lee... and they should make a video together that is so disgusting you can't help but watch it... like a train wreck, a very bad train wreck.

You mean the locomotive goes into the tunnel?

Where's a good facepalm pic when you need one?

Wait...

That'll do in a crunch.
