Well, it's your classic "tragic love story." But I think the characters have transcended Shakespeare's play so that they become icons of "two young people who love each other despite family disapproval;" and Romeo in particular transcends even that.
Though I do think subverting expected tragedy (though not deadly tragedy) is important for Taylor Swift's song, hence a need to have some understanding of how the play ends (if not the particulars).
