I don't see why not. They had a SF Show based on concept pioneered by a show in a different genre.

Of course DS9 was trying to grow the franchise. Every iteration of the franchise is trying to do that

In defence of SNW. You've only got 10 stand-alone episodes to play with, so you're missing out on the 14 more you would've got in the 90's. They're going to amp up the comedy episode because they won't get another chance until the next year.
