Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien developing new live-action Trek series

In Star Trek from the beginning, since TOS there has been so many moments that made me laugh, even between very serious stuff, so I don't see a reason to make a comedy show to force laughs.

Star Trek: Voyager:

EMH: "You're a woman, Seven."
Seven of Nine: "Is that an observation or a diagnosis?"

Live action comedy?

Imo, the comedy in Lower Decks works well. If the life action comedy show is anything like that, it could be fun! :techman:

Absolutely. But as you know, fun has no place in Star Trek. ;)

Seriously, some folks in this thread are starting to remind me of one of my former bosses, an uptight bastard who upon noticing some of his staff were starting to enjoy themselves wrote "FUN IS CANCELLED" on the department's communications white board.

Whatever. But a complete live action comedy in Star Trek will completely change the tone of the entire franchise. I get that there have been comedy episodes of Trek before. Some done really well...but I'm thinking we are going to see an all out slapstick, almost surreal Green Acres kind of stuff in Trek now.

I see the franchise going the way of the MCU. A certain tone was set and then other writers come in and completely go overboard on a theme or what is popular with the younger crowd today. Now half the MCU is complete and utter comedy. We are talking stuff that is even more over the top then Batman66.

I bet we see fourth wall breaking characters talking to the producers type of crap eventually. Maybe the actors will walk out of the Paramount+ screen. They have already used two other plot devices from other shows last season on SNW. So why not? 😏

I disagree too, but "quality over quantity" is an extremely valid argument.

Right. But if one has watched all 624 episodes of Berman Trek. They would know that there are more then 20 episodes of excellent Trek there. DS9 for example had some of the best Trek to ever be put to screen. Not much in Trek 2015-2024 has matched that and definitely has not exceeded that imo. Even Picard Season 3 which I have liked more than any of the other Kurtzman produced Trek.

So 20 episodes of SNW is better than the entirety of 624 episodes of the berman era?? :guffaw:

Yeah ok... 😏
In terms of quality? Absolutely. Without a doubt. There hasn't been a bad episode of Strange New Worlds, in my opinion. Its batting average in 1.000.

As ever, I will reserve judgment until I see the thing. I do wonder what the long term creative vision for the franchise is.

In your (and my) opinion. Maybe not in theirs. Or maybe they think that the bad eps of the older series' weight them down, thus lowering their overall score?
Well of course imo. I don't always or feel the need to put that in there. I just assume people know it's an opinion. 😉 I will try to put that in there more.

Maybe people do think that way. If I did though I would have dismissed everything from Discovery season 5. Which I did not. It was the first season where I pretty much liked every episode. I was pleasantly surprised.
