When Q sent Picard to the life he would have led as an "undistinguished" officer, do you think that his perspective would have changed if he discovered he had a family/wife? It seems like Picard as captain is adventurous etc.. but lonely. I loved this episode, but it would have been interesting to see other aspects of this "steady, punctual" Picard.

Seeing how even the "realized his own mortality" Picard doesn't have a family, I doubt the "never took any chances" Picard would've been able to have any relationships with women that resulted in marriage either.

That's a good idea for a fan fiction. Someone should pick that up. A story where Picard gets a look at the alternate life and says "This isn't so bad. Not as much pressure. I get to live longer. And now I have more time to read!" And the whole story could be spent learning about this new character.

...who resembles Burgess Meredith, wears coke-bottle glasses, and locks himself in the safe at the bank where he works. :p

Or that Picard comes to realize that there's more to life than just sitting in the Big Chair. That perhaps what makes life worth living is a decent job and a family that loves you.

Sounds like The Inner Light.

Didn't Moore and Braga try something like that ... and it was full of plot holes?

In The Inner Light, he was forced to accept that type of life, not asked to choose. Great episode.

...Lt. Picard enters his quarters... turns the corner, and sees.... Vash?

True, but I would argue that the outcome would be practically the same: Because of the nature of TNG, Picard would obviously choose his life as a captain. So in the end he's the captain again in both versions and has memories of another possible life.

Snuffles,

It's certainly an interesting idea. I always thought an idea for a sequel would be for Picard to somehow switch places with the alternate, play-it-safe Picard, and vice versa, and see what would happen. We'd see our Picard try to make a difference in the life of an officer with wasted potential, while the other Picard would have a taste of command but still try to play it safe, perhaps to the detriment of the Enterprise.
