Second, Anthony Rapp (Rent, Road Trip) will star as Lt. Stamets, an “astromycologist,” fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery. Lt. Stamets is the new gay character.

Not that his opinion on wanting more gay characters in Trek was ever really in doubt (he just disputed making nuSulu gay), but given the bruhaha that ensued following his remarks on nuSulu in Beyond, I appreciate him making the effort to get out in front of this and express his enthusiasm for the gay character in Discovery. It's not intended as a required seal of approval, it's just an expression of support.

Not a lot of love for George in this thread. Of course he's pleased that there will be a Gay character in Discovery, as anybody should be. His opinion of nuSulu just shows that he puts artistic integrity above politics, which is something to be admired.
