coincidentally when he's trying to drum up publicity for the play he was performing in at the time...
I thought it was a little disgusting that on the surface he seemed to be exploiting his sexual orientation for personal gain.
IIRC, George did not come out to the general public until after his mother passed away. He didn't want her caught in any possible media backlash. Also, up until these more (supposedly) enlightened times, coming out about one's different-to-the-norm sexual orientation often meant one lost much more than one gained, at least in terms of job security, etc. As if being a mature, typecast, Asian-American actor hadn't already marginalized him for acting roles.
I also recall that George and many other Arnold-for-governor supporters were very angry that Arnold S. did not go ahead with certain pre-election promises he'd made about gay rights in California, thus leading to several well-considered Takei announcements in the media.
But George can't win. If, the next time a journalist or reporter shoves a microphone near him and asks for yet another comment on his feud with Shatner, he says "No comment"... then the fans will be demanding to know what else George is hiding.
And I don't recall any official announcement that George Takei was in the new movie. I think some fannish speculation had Elderly Captain Sulu taking Elderly Ambassaor Spock back through time.
But hardly "a lie", Robert.
