Taika Waititi to write and direct Thor 4

You really won't need to see it if you don't want to, though. Guardians met Thor. They fought Thanos. Star lord is insecure about how everyone loves Thor. Thor hitches a ride off earth with them after the battle is over. That's really all you could possibly need to know.

I also wouldn't be surprised if their role in the film is limited to the first act, basically there to get Thor someplace, and then they go off to do whatever Gunn wants to do with their third film, leaving Thor to do Thor stuff.

Yeah, that's what I've been expecting, too, and I felt that the trailer confirms that notion. Especially since Gamora is absent and Zoe Salanda isn't confirmed, so chances are the Guardians resume their search for her once they part ways.

IIRC the Guardians cast weren't in Australia all that long*, so I'd expect them be done in the first 15 minutes of the movie.

*I can't remember if they had to quarantine at all or if they got the special rich people exemption.

It does seem from the official synopsis that the Guardians are only in the beginning of the film:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Not a bad trailer. I love the vibrant colors that this director uses. It really does look like a comic book come to life. This trailer is all about Thor's quest to find himself. I'm sure the next one will be about Jane Foster maybe with some Pat Benator or Joan Jett music. Don't be surprised if it gets more views than this one did.

Looks like Valkyrie kept her MIB international uniform

Also this comic book page is recreated almost identically in the movie

I wonder if Jane became "Thor" when Thor was off on retirement, assuming there's a time jump between when the Guardians drop him off wherever and when he gets involved in the main plot.

Yeah, that would be my guess, that once he gives up being Thor, Jane ends up taking over. The big question is how she ends up with Mjolnir.

Who says Mjolnir can't put itself back together? If it has the ability to fly and choose who can wield it, it shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that it can fix itself.

It doesn't fly, only drawn to its wielder at high velocity. Nor does it decide who can wield it rather that's the spell Odin placed on it when he banished Thor.

I disagree.

If someone is just a casual fan who is only watching the Thor movies and not paying attention to any other MCU films or properties, his being with the Guardians in this movie, regardless of how much they're actually in the film, is going to make no sense without the contextual clues of having seen Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame, which I personally find to be unfortunate.

The MCU films that I have personally connected with (the first two Iron Man movies, the first two Captain America movies, the first 3 Thor movies, The Incredible Hulk, Doctor Strange, Chang-Chi, and Eternals) all work as standalone entities in and of themselves and don't require any significant knowledge of wider events in the MCU to be appreciated.

I totally get what you are saying as that's been a big complaint of mine with Marvel the last few phases, particularly with the Spider-man films. But I doubt many fans of Thor skipped Infinity War and Endgame since they both had Thor in it. And I'm pretty sure the Guardians of the Galaxy are only going to be in this long enough to drop him off and go on their merry way.
