Taika Waititi to write and direct Thor 4

The Hollywood Reporter does not "speculate" about things.

And neither do Variety, Deadline Hollywood, or Entertainment Weekly.

The fact that this came directly from The Hollywood Reporter as independent corroboration of a report from another site means that it's legitimate, but it also doesn't mean that it's 100% guaranteed to happen.

The references to speculation related not to Bale being in negotiations for the role (which nobody disputes) but to the role he’ll play (which THR does not say).

^ Ok.

If this doesn't fall through, it kind of serves as a further blow to the ridiculous argument that comic-book films aren't "real cinema" because he'll be the 19th Oscar Winner to join the franchise.

The A.V. Club has their own guess, a character named Dario Agger. I've never heard of the character, but the article says he was a villain who appeared during Jane Foster's time as Thor.
I'm assuming if he, or someone else, play Beta Ray Bill that he'll probably be a mo-cap character.
IGN came up with 6 possible characters for Bale to play, Beta Ray Bill, Balder, Cul Borson, Mangog, Agger, and Gor the God Butcher.

Except that people too often mistake it for actual news. And then perpetuate the disinformation by sharing it all over the internet.

"Have you heard the news? Lady Gaga is going to play Poison Ivy in the next BATMAN movie!"

"I know! I heard it from a friend who read it on the internet. I just wrote a whole blog about it--and started a petition to have her replaced by that hot actress I really like!"
Except no one here is presenting this speculation as news. I'm not nor is A.V. Club.

If the past is any indication, that's not necessarily going to stop people from taking it as such, especially after it gets passed around by word of mouth and social media.

Seriously, look at any clickbait headline that uses the word "reportedly." Chances are, the vast majority of the comments will proceed on the assumption that the news is real and fiercely argue the pros and cons of something may or may not just a wild guess or rumor.

The idea that "Hey, maybe we shouldn't get all worked up about this until, you know, it's actually a thing?" is quickly left in the dust.

But, to be clear, I'm just venting about the internet in general, not this specific rumor.

Ah yes, the Minotaur. I could see that too. Especially since Agger is the head of Roxxon, which lets them play with the corporate angle OR the monster angle depending on which way they want to go.

Now that I think about it, that might be right up Bale's alley. Play a vile, corporate shark who gets to turn into a CGI monstrosity and kick Thor(s) around. I can see that fitting Waititi's sensibilities better than something like Gorr as well. It's difficult for me to imagine the humor built around a movie focused on Gorr. Not to say it couldn't be done, just that my brain has a hard time seeing it.

Yeah, I get all of that, my point is it wasn't an issue here until you brought it up.

But I totally get the venting thing. I've done plenty of that about many things.

I do respect Hemsworth for not buggering off like the rest of them and continue the Thor saga. my theory is that Jane broke up with Thor because she found out she has cancer (probably for carrying the Aether) and didn’t want to cause Thor further pain.
Would be fun to see Portman as a action star again. Haven’t seen that since Star Wars.

She did make the Annihilation. That one had couple of action scenes.

They all function as mouthpieces for studios, though. I think it was THR that had a very, very obviously planted story that did a hatchet job on Lord & Miller about five hours after their firing from Solo was announced, for example. Variety ran a similar hit piece about Colin Trevorrow when he got sacked from Star Wars 9 that very blatantly had Frank Marshall as its primary source.

Definitely sounds like it. Nice to get confirmation about him being in it.

Agger as both Roxxon CEO in the MCU "here+now" and "monster" villain would be interesting.

I don't see them playing with loose threads from Agent Carter and Cloak and Dagger, but still...
