Scientists have discovered that uttering swear words can help to lessen the feeling of physical pain.

The study by researchers at Keele University found that volunteers were able to withstand pain for longer when they swore compared to when they used words which were not offensive.

Not exactly news, but now we finally have proof that swearing is good for something - or put in a slightly different way: people that don't swear are less good at certain things ;)

Your thoughts please!

Do you swear?

What makes you swear?

I do swear at times because of ignorant people who bite my head off for no apparant reason. That makes my blood boil.

Funny but this is front-page news at both machine-shop forums I go to. Those of us who work with our hands (and occasionally bork a finger or three!) have known this for centuries. :D

Apparently it also helps to swear when experiencing emotional pain :vulcan:

Indeed, as I said: Not exactly news :)

I swear way too much.. and when I hurt myself I don't swear at all. I go silent. VERY silent.

Prolly why it hurts like ****

Yes, swearing reduces pain. This is why all Mods swear like pirates.

I sometimes swear, but I look at someone who swears incessantly and I wonder what kind of vocabulary they really have. I guess now I know why they do it.
