Survivor: Redemption Island Discussion (Spoilers)

Locutus of Bored

Yo, Dawg! I Heard You Like Avatars...
In Memoriam
I was surprised that there wasn't a thread for this yet, so I went ahead and started it myself. I guess we can just make this the thread for the whole season.

Where to begin? I liked the difference in reactions between the tribes when Rob (cheering) and Gollum (shocked silence) stepped off the second helicopter. Fransesqua (I won't use Francesca's very easy to pronounce real name, as an homage to "Special" Agent Philip. She's Survivor's version of Astrid from 'Fringe') mentioning how dangerous Rob and Gollum were right off the bat was a bad move, regardless of how true it was.

Both sides did well with setting up their respective shelters, the toolbox obviously helping a great deal in that regard.

It was a bad idea for Kristina to look for an immunity idol clue in the toolbox where Rob could see her, but her finding the immunity idol without any clues just by checking around landmarks was pretty clever.

Unfortunately she ruined it by trusting an obviously unstable and unpredictable player in Philip. Why you would team up with a guy with an massive ego like that bragging about being a federal agent and therefore absolutely trustworthy is beyond me, especially after he revealed his need to dominate and control everyone in his circle. Kristine and Fresca should have teamed up with Rob and used his skills to get them as far as they can as a team by winning reward and immunity challenges and then vote him out later on before they start playing for themselves.

I don't think we can really judge the Rob/Gollum contest solely by the immunity challenge, since Rob's team was weaker physically, losing a huge amount of ground, and Rob still nearly helped them make it up in the puzzle section before losing.

That was arguably the most entertaining tribal council yet, and definitely the best first tribal council. What is with people not learning to not shoot their mouth off in tribal? Jeff was just stunned by Philip's insanity, but somehow he managed to cast enough doubt on Kristina and Fonzieca to split the vote between the three of them and ultimately get Frozone voted off.

I'm glad to see Rob still hanging around since he really makes the show enjoyable, but a little disappointed to see Francisco get voted out in the first round. She seemed really smart and didn't put up with any of Philip's crap, so I liked her. But hey, maybe she can hang in there on Redemption Island and come back, but somehow that seems unlikely since she's got to outlast everyone else that goes there to until they decide to bring the person back from the island.

Anyway, the show got off to a very entertaining start, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Redemption Island plays into the game.

Best first episode of the series? I love it when sparks fly at Tribal Council and sparks flew so much during this one. I really wanted to like Kristina for finding the idol with no clues, but man what a stupid move to tell 3 people. It's too early to tell anyone, let alone the most unstable guy in your camp.

Looking forward to the first Redemption Island Duel. I don't think Francesca will do well, but maybe she will. Loved how she got like 3 first names in about a ten minute span. :guffaw:

I hope Philip was mispronouncing her name deliberately just to piss her off, because otherwise I might question his abilities as a "federal agent" (agency unspecified; might as well be the IRS). Though, to be honest, I'd question it anyway because he's kind of nuts and terrible at reading people despite his claims otherwise.

I look forward to reading Jeff Probst's blog post about this first episode. That ought to be entertaining.

One small thing I noticed was when they brought his name up during one of those interview segments, it said "Phillip, Federal Agent?". I was a bit amused by the question mark there. ;)

I actually liked that Phillip outed Francesca and Kristina's plan at the Tribal; it might've put a target on his back as far as Kristina's concerned, but it could lead to his officially becoming part of the 'BR Alliance' (Boston Rob Alliance), which can only solidify his position in the game.

Speaking of Kristina, I started out liking her, but quickly changed my feelings when she foolishly decided to target Rob right out of the gate. It will be interesting to see whether or not my opinion of her shifts back towards the 'like' end of the spectrum.

I do seriously hope we never have to see/hear from Francesca again, though, because the woman got on my nerves.

On the other side of the equation, Russell is one of those guys that I love to hate, so he's got my interest held for as long as he's in the game; I also like Ralph, who seems like an interesting character given what we saw of him in the first ep. The one person on the purple team that I don't like, though, is Stephanie; of all the people who fit Russell's usual 'alliance' modus operandi, there were a few others he could've approached instead of her.

Oh my, so much stupidity. Where to start? "I used to be a federal agent"+freakout at the first tribal, Russell being Russell yet again, immunity idol being advertised to the whole tribe yet again, Rob not getting voted out ASAP, Rob being incredibly cocky and bossy, etc etc.

Rob not getting voted out ASAP, Rob being incredibly cocky and bossy, etc etc.

When was Rob bossy? In fact, his tribemates all commented on how laid back and cooperative he was. The only time he said anything remotely bossy that I can recall was when Kristina was looking for the idol in the supplies, and he said that was a bad idea or something. That came off as being more helpful advice than really bossy to me. The stuff at tribal was just him trying to stay alive, and it was smart since it shifted the target off of him and onto Kristina and Francesca.

As far as getting rid of him so early, even with his strategic strength, I think that would be a mistake while they're still playing as teams for so long. He's got experience, leadership, excellent strength and speed, and great puzzle solving abilities. His team already has less physical strength than Russel's team if the challenge was any indication, so they need all the help they can get in that regard and with puzzle-solving. Rob almost caught them up on the puzzle despite them lagging so far behind. I think getting rid of him so early would practically guarantee that they'd lose most of the challenges.

Well, he got his whole tribe to vote exactly the way he wanted and for now he seems like the undisputed leader of his tribe, and he was aggressive at tribal council. That's all pretty impressive, I thought at first he's gotten a little fat, but clearly he wants this. But no, he's got to go, every day they keep him here and let him entrench his alliances is a mistake, he's way too strong imo.

Ugh...I wish they wouldn't change the name every season. My DVR settings have to be changed. It looks like I'll be watching the first episode via CBS.com.

Edit: Just watched the episode...It's interesting how much losing an immunity challenge helped Rob's chances in the game.

Edit #2: Probst has a pre-game video about how he thinks the contestants will do...He is apparently under the impression that that guy really is a counter-intelligence agent. Of course, Probst doesn't his little speech about it is going to help. "When he laid it out on me, I thought, man, I'm giving you the X and telling you to go home."

I had not intended to watch this season, but I happened to be surfing as it came on and got sucked in. I'm really sick of Rob and Russel and wish they would go away. Soon.

As for not getting rid of Rob so soon, I'm thinking how can anyone on either tribe not want to get those 2 out of there ASAP? They KNOW what these guys can do. I guess some people delude themselves into thinking "Oh he's going to take me to the finals."

As for the "Federal Agent" guy, why would Rob and Company want him in an alliance after that meltdown in tribal? He has proven he is totally untrustworthy in a very public way.

Phillip is hilarious, in a completely psychotic way. Love the red, ball hugging ginch he was wearing too.

I was amazed when Kristina found the idol, but was completely floored when she told Phillip. Not even sure why she told Fonzie either, I think that's a reveal you make later in the game.

Thought the guy with the long blond hair, Fabio 2.0, was a woman for half the show.

That redneck is going to win, you heard it here first.

That tribal council was epic. I wouldn't have voted out Farberella though, I would have dumped Kristina and her idol.

Love how Rob charmed his way in with the hot ladies, classic.

Loved the way Russell found his woman, who was pretty easily convinced to get on board with him. You'd think that given the last two times he hitched his wagon to a lady didn't work out so well for him he'd try a new strategy.

I like the idea of the Redemption thing, how they have to fend for themselves and then compete with another castaway, excited to see how that plays out.

In any event, quite glad to be watching Survivor again. The only thing I wish is that they were in a different location from last season, but oh well.

Yeah, after changing their name 21 times in 22 seasons, it sure is a new thing, huh?

The ONLY season called Survivor was the first. This is the 22nd season. How long does it take to clue in that it's going to change every season?

Survivor needs to stop reliving it's past glories, bringing back old favorites again and again, and start making some new ones. The All-Star season was fun because it was new at the time. But then Fans vs. Favorites, bringing back Stephanie and Bobby Jon, Heroes vs. Villians....

^^
On the other hand, Fans vs Favorites and Heroes vs Villains are two of the best seasons of Survivor imo (minus the ending of the latter), and All-Stars was fun too. This season also could become pretty epic, it was certainly an entertaining start.

I like Kristen btw (or however she spells her name), too bad she screwed herself so badly right from the start by blabbering to the psycho and putting herself in Rob's target. Her best move from here probably is playing the idol at the next tribal and campaigning for Rob to get voted off. At least she should be safe another week. I was almost scared she could hand over the idol...

I normally do the Survivor threads but, bah!

I'll have to watch this OnDemand or something because I forgot to record it and because CBS sucks it's impossible to just to a "series recording" with Survivor since every damn season is named something different.

But I'm not thrilled about Russell or Boston Rob being back why not go for the trifecta and bring Rupert back too?

Who said anything about it being a new thing? It's just an annoyance.

Yep.

Agreed. I don't care for bringing back past players to begin with, and with the number of times they've gone that route, it's really getting old.

Despite that, this season got off to a good start. There seems to be some real characters in the cast. Philip seems like he's going to be a hoot to watch. Not sure what's up with his bragging about being a federal agent. Is that supposed to intimidate and awe the other players? I'd be more impressed if I knew what kind of federal agent. For all I know, he could be just a paper pusher in some obscure bureaucracy.

I was sorry to see Francesca leave so early, but she made the mistake of making an alliance too soon and got stuck with nut case Philip and Kristina, who apparently doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut. Players should really take the time to assess other players before committing to an alliance. I don't see Francesca making it back from Redemption Isle, so I think she's toast.

It'll be interesting to see if the teams alter their decisions on who to vote out because of Redemption Island. It could make teams less likely to vote out stronger players, knowing they'd have a better chance at returning.

Just watched it. DAMN that Phillip guy is nuts. I can't imagine he'll last too much longer.

Kristina groused about how the other players don't seem to be playing yet, she was the only one looking for an idol, etc. Maybe it hasn't occurred to her that perhaps the rest of the tribe doesn't share her strategy of 'paint a target on my back from the get-go?'
