Surprising Star Trek fan opinions

It may be helpful to quote the Phase II series bible's description (as reprinted in the Reeves-Stevens' 'Lost Series' book) of Decker, who was of course the inspiration for Riker. The bible describes Decker (p 90) as
...a very humorous man. He particularly enjoys playing the 'too perfect' soulless marionette of an officer. The joke can be confusing to others because Will can become almost that kind of officer when Kirk's welfare or the safety of the ship is involved.
And that's pretty much how I've always seen Frakes's portrayal of Riker - an illusion of a one-dimensional person because it's in some ways all in fun to him. It's debatable whether this was purposefully carried over to Riker, but I'm guessing it was. I know some people don't like him, and IDIC, but I do and I think he did a good job.

Well, in a presidential election, this would count as "a landslide." There are politicians who would kill for these approval ratings.

You're absolutely right that all is measures is how many people are comfortable saying "I hate Jadzia." But since that was apparently what it was designed to measure, I don't quite understand why you should be critical that all it shows is that, that's right, most people don't want to say they hate Jadzia. I mean, let's be reasonable. ;)

Haha. I actually had a small paragraph written up taking about how in the US's charged and 2-party political climate 10% would be a 'tiny majority', but when looked at through any other looking glass it is not a small minority at all, but I decided againt dragging politics into this. :p

Also, the poll in question doesn't ask if people hate Jadzia, it asks if people hate Farrell as Jadzia. I would venture that some people dislike the character, but not because of the actor. I think that is more than reasonable.

* Many people not only love "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", but actually think it's one of the best Star Trek movies.
Like me, except now JJ's new movie runs a tie as my favourite.

* The Cardassians have a cult following.
Not surprising.

* A lot of people don't like Jadzia Dax.
I liked her in "Emissary", but finally loved her in "Blood Oath" and "The Search". From then on, the character really came into her own.

* Just how much people hate "Star Trek: Nemesis"
Diehard fans were hating it from the moment the first script treatment was leaked onto the Internet. I still can't believe so many people boycotted the film in the US, making "Maid in Manhattan" an opening weekend success. Interesting that the single-disk DVD still did sell sell on its launch weekend.

It's debatable whether this was purposefully carried over to Riker, but I'm guessing it was.

Jonathan Frakes has told the story: Gene Roddenberry was determined to get him through the audition process and gave him several coaching sessions on how to convey the character in his screentests, so Riker - esp. in Season One - is very much exactly what GR wanted him to be.

Ah, thanks Therin. :)

Another one: I am a TOS fan, and I have been surprised at the number who love terrible episodes because of their cheese or camp. I am too serious, I suppose. (But "Whom Gods Destroy??? C'mon people!!)

One of my favourites. But it has an Andorian in it. :bolian:

And a green Batgirl. :vulcan:

He could change shape with the power of his mind.:scream:

I could stomach the human telepaths, but that was getting a little out there.

Please give good examples of Frakes acting well.

Why? It's apparent that my idea of how he could act and your idea of how he couldn't act are completely divergent. It's best to leave it at that.

J.

You might want to include a smiley next time to indicate sarcasm, Jaespol. It's too easy to believe someone might say that, given how many people on this site actually say things like that - not exactly that way, of course. They normally use a lot more words.

Actually, saying something so plainly might be an improvement for some of them. :p

As if anyone will listen to a supposed expert on sarcasm... :)
