Supernatural7x4 "Defending Your Life" spoiler/discussion thread

Dean, tell Sam the truth already! Past history should tell you that all these secrets and lies only cause trouble for you and Sam.

Damn, I wish this show had a budget. Really, really wish it had a budget.

Oh well it's a character piece and they did a fairly good job highlighting the differences between the characters.

Last week's thread I talked about Sam feels like he did when the pilot started (minus the hating of the hunting). No driven by anger and guilt over Jess's Death, No waiting to save others to save himself, not driven by the need to save Dean from Hell, not fueled by Demon blood and finally having a sense of empowerment over his own destiny, not hunting due to accidental freeing of Lucifer, not driven by fears of giving into Lucy, not soul less, not feeling guilt over what his soul less self did. Just a base level Sam who's only real issue is his psychotic break (and even that isn't motivating him to act in a different way).

Nice to see that was the writer's intent, and I wasn't just reading into things that weren't on the page.

Where as Dean is always feeling the guilt of his actions and how they impact others. He never really has pushed those out of his life, he just suppresses them. And yes Dean has always felt guilt over things that aren't his direct fault. Like other people don't make their own choices.

Besides the lack of budget (serious lack of budget) for this episode, I didn't really care for the portrayal of Osiris. Just not how I thought it would go.

I also didn't care for Sam the lawyer. Especially where he is trying to convince Dean that he didn't have reason to feel the guilt he felt. It wouldn't have convinced Dean, Hell it didn't convince me, and I know half the crap he feels isn't his fault.

I wanted Sam to do something that would actually reach Dean (see Fresh Blood's scene with Sam confronting Dean in the Hotel, see Bloodlust, where Sam calls out Dean for his Gordon worship). We needed to see Dean believe it.

We needed something of Sam admitting (and he has before in rare quit moments) how Dean didn't drag him into the hunting life by bringing Sam with him (Azazel took care of that, thank you very much), but that Dean saved Sam. Without Dean in those years what would have Sam become? Well Sam knows (thank You Gabriel). We should have scene something that pushed that.

Acting wise Jensen did great, Alona did well with her part (again how much more I like the actress when they aged her character with a little experience).

I though this was probably Jared weakest episode to date this season. Again the whole courtroom scenes were really weak for Jared.

Yeah, not the best episode. Not much tension and I really wanted Amy to come back. Apparently, though, they are saving that for a much more dramatic to-do later on.

I thought Sam's dialogue was a bit too "After School Special;" it was just too corny. I'm not sure it was Jared's fault per se. The whole court room scene was a bit lame. They could've done more with the actor who played Osiris, Taran Fahir. He's done lots of other things (like Trek and 24) and he's good in all of them. He would've made a very menacing god, but he came off more like comic relief.

A pretty weak episode here, and I haven't thought that about this show in a long time.

Me too. Who better to defend Dean? And I like the mental/emotional place Sam is at. Yes, he's dealing with the hallucination problem which will stay with him for the rest of his life. But that aside, this is the most at peace we have seen him in a long time. I know he was kind of like that after he got his soul back but at the time, he had that wall in his mind keeping back his memories of Hell and being soulless. Now Sam doesn't have that wall anymore and is fully a complete individual who has come to terms with the crap from his past. I just hope Dean will this season or I'm afraid it's just a matter of time before he eats his gun or willingly puts him in the position of getting killed to put himself out of his misery. Dean's guilt trip needs to end.

The season has been great so far, but I felt that this episode was just OK. While the show's producers are doing a great job with the resources they have, I agree that the small budget is holding the show back to a certain extent and keeping it from being as good as it can be - which is why I hope that the series is eventually turned into a movie franchise.

Another good episode. It seems they are trying to get the "filler" episodes finished snd shown so that the latter half or so of the season is dedicated to the Leviathon storyline. I'd say they are trying to please the fans by going back to a hunt the monster of the week for now.
Nice to see they haven't really gotten rid of Sam's hallucinations (although I think that is going to be a major plot twist that is upcoming) and he seems to be a more balance between himself and "soul-less" Sam.
I absolutely loved Faran Tahir's performance as Osirus!! Seems to me he could end up being like Gabriel/ Trickster and make a few appearences. Definitly a character "you love to hate" IMO.

I thought it was an OK episode, probably my least favorite so far this season. I think my biggest problem was that only came into the show long after Jo had died, and I've still never see the first couple seasons, so most of what they dealt with was pretty much unknown for me. I thought Faran Tahir did a pretty good job with what he was given. I was kinda disappointed they didn't do more with the Amy incident, but like antihill said up thread they must be saving that for later in the season.
