There two ways for Bobby's situation to be resolved:

1) Bobby dies and never comes back, and it turns out news of Jim Beaver leaving the show has been kept very much under wraps. In this case, this episode really done a good job sending Bobby off in style, doing what he does best: helping his boys. The episode also explores some of what drives Bobby's attachment to Sam and Dean which was very illuminating and heartbreaking.

OR

2) Bobby dies and comes back as a ghost that'll help Sam and Dean from time to time.

Either way, I don't see Bobby coming back as the very much alive hunter he was before this happened. They could have done that before he went unconscious again and gone into critical condition near the end of the episode. But now we have reached the point of no return. I can't wait to see which road the show is going to take.

ARRRRRRRRGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn cliffhanger. Though I'm almost 100% sure Bobby is dead I hate that they left his fate up in the air until the show returns next month but damn...cliffANGER!

I was glad to see Bobby's abusive scumbag Dad take a bullet to the head. I hate abusive assholes like that.

Wow, I really enjoyed this episode if for no other reason than it showed me just how many pullable heartstrings I have.

Despite loving the character like mad, I do hope Bobby chooses to go. The only reason I can see him refusing is because he knows just how dickish the angels are and how much fun they'd have tormenting him, and because he really does know there's a Hell and just how bad it can be. On the other hand, he knows many of his memories have already disappeared, so hanging on to them and his humanity as a ghost is a long shot at best.

I wonder if Sam and Dean ever told him about Ash and what he's managed to pull off in Heaven. If he does, I think that'd be the choice he'd go with.

We may have an episode to rival "In My Time of Dying" as the most gut wrenching SPN episode ever produced. And to think that his character was meant to be a one off....

Man, Castiel and Bobby in the same season? They're really cleaning house, aren't they?

As someone pushing for Bobby's death, I was very pleased to see the show have the balls to go there, I also really liked the episode so that didn't hurt.

When a show has a high death count but certain characters seem immune to real harm, it hurts the drama of the universe.

In a season where the bad guys have all the knowledge of Castiel, and that the producers have stated several times to put Sam and Dean in a them against the world, setting, keeping Bobby around ( ther biggest ally, friend, and info source, and basic safe house) defeats that goal.

But as happy as I am for that. Damn, I am going to miss Jim. A lot.

Crossroad deal. Dean's done it before so they know it works. It's just an issue of finding something that the demon wants enough to trade for. Obviously, souls are right out. But that's okay, because no demon wants to be stabbed to death. Sam and Dean can easily summon a crossroads demon into a devil's trap and not stabbing it to death for Bobby's life. And if it refuses, stab it to death and summon another. A pile of dead bodies can be a good motivator.

Crowley probably won't appreciate such shenanigans, but they really don't care what he thinks.

I think Sam and Dean know by now that making deals with demons are more trouble than they are worth after the bad experiences of that in Season 3 and 4.

Yeah it's about as likely as seeing them capture a demon let Sam drink away and force any demon in doing what he wishes. The show won't go there, even if the characters could without any real consequence.

Aw, man!

I was afraid of this. If they wanted Sam and Dean isolated, they could have just put Bobby in a coma for a few months. He's always been one of my favorites. In fact, he's probably my very favorite character on the show.

But what a great episode. Talk about not giving up. And now we have a really good idea of what made Bobby tick; he was a great man.

And even the Reaper knew it. I love how he treated Bobby with respect. He knew who he was dealing with.

Now what will Bobby decide...?

Sam and Dean won't make a deal. Bobby wouldn't want that. Jim Beaver can still make appearances via flashback or as a ghost. It's not like the actor has to be gone for good. Mary Winchester died in the pilot, but she's appeared in seven episodes since then, 5 times in the person of Samantha Smith, and 2 in the person of Amy Gumeneck as the younger version of Mary.

I wish the people who wrote this episode had been on the writing staff of Enterprise to pen Trip's death if he had to die. You know. Emotional resonance. Having other characters do more than complain they didn't get VIP seats. That sort of thing.

Death in the Supernatural universe is a weird thing since we've actually seen Death, seen Heaven itself... and Heaven is oddly lackluster. Yes, it sure beats non-existence, but it's basically a pleasant waiting room for everyone to cool their heels in.

One might assume that Bobby would be a strong enough personality to not settle for the "Heavenly lounge" as his eternity. Of course, it would be a fantastic tribute to his character, to one day reveal that Bobby ends up "hacking" the afterlife much as Ash, and is himself an operator in Heaven as he was an operator on earth for hunters.

Even if Dean or Sam wanted to do this, which I think all things being equal neither would. So far out of all the people that they have had die, Dean tried made a deal to save Sam, and Sam attempted to deal for Dean.

I don't know if Bobby (as much as they do love him, would put the guys so far out there they would do such a thing.

We also know that Cross Road Demons don't just show up if you call. They can absolutely refuse. So after knowing that Sam can take pretty much any demon, if he so wanted, and that Dean (not to mention Sam) are all about the killing of demons. So I don't think a CRD would just thing, sure all go see what these guys want.

I think Crowley is taking a hands off approach with Dean and Sam right right now. He is telling his demons to leave them alone, but not really helping them any other way.

Helping them with Bobby would be completely out of character for him.

They don't actually have a choice in the matter. You summon one and it automatically teleports to your location, whether it wants to or not. Even demons that aren't powerful enough to teleport on their own are subject to such summoning. It's one of the many small annoyances that come with being a demon.
