So not a comedy. Last new ep until January 14, good people. Hope I get home from the sales meeting in time. My boss insists on having it at 6:30 tonight.
CLIP

no DVR or Tivo Dorian? This episode looks like a good one, mid season finale before the hiatus should deliver a great cliffhanger. Kripke hardly fails to deliver on these

Looking forward to this as always.

After a few (I shouldn't say) more comedic episodes, I'm ready for a "Not Comedy".

I'm back! I'm home! :) The sales rep from Colorado cancelled out on us so my boss sent us home. I've got a DVR, Obiwanshinobi, but it's not working properly at the moment. Oh man, my favorite college team is on ESPN. Oh well, SPN comes first. I can catch the second half of the game afterwards.

NOOOOOOOO!!!! :(:(:(

Sheesh. When they said it wasn't going to be a comedy, they weren't kidding. I'm gutted about them dying. They were soldiers with the best of them.

Makes sense that the colt wouldn't kill Lucifer. Ruby repaired it, and she was working for Lucifer all along. Why would she fix the gun so it would be powerful enough to kill him? Makes sense that Crowley had it, too. I was wondering all along why Lilith wouldn't just destroy it. Crowley had a reason not to. Speaking of which, Mark Sheppard f'ing rocks. Can't believe they had the guts to shy a guy/guy kiss. Good for them.

I thought they might use Jo as the vessel for Death. He's the pale rider, and they had her looking so pale. What a twist that would be. But I don't think there's much of her left after that explosion.

Now that is more like it. Best episode of the season thus far. Only other episode I enjoyed as much was "I believe Children are Our Future" but I think I preferred this episode more because everything worked from teaser to end credits. "Children are Our Future" took about a third of the episode to really get going.

Please more of this type of episode where it ties into the mythology, advances the plot, is more cohesive as a narrative and can be enjoyed as an hour on its owns rather than feeling as though it is simply a means to an end.

I liked Crowley. Sheppard did a good job and is certainly a more interesting character than Romo Lampkin who I couldn't stand.

I enjoyed the revelations and surprising developments--the colt can't kill him, he successfully freed Death, neat explanation for why he was in Carthage, his current host is degrading which ties back nicely to what we learned earlier in the season. We also find out that in 6 months Sam will say yes to being his vessel in Detroit--coincides with possibly the series finale(season?).

I also enjoyed seeing the hunters working together. I was never crazy about Jo but their swansong was effective and even somewhat moving.

The episode also had an outstanding sense of dread and foreboding. These kinds of episodes reflect positively on the show boosting its dramatic bonafides--why they choose to do those stupid comedies is beyond me. It just gives me whiplash going from the self-deprecating parodies back to a more thoughtful drama.

I'd give this outing a B+/A-. Good job.

Mark Sheppard is excellent. Much potential there. I'm glad you liked it, Startrekwatcher. It's so funny, though. Everyone knows I have a nonsensical obsession with that those crazies at TWOP think. I called it. The same ones who were screaming bloody murder about too much comedy are "offended" beyond belief at the deaths of Ellen and Jo. Sure they wanted a more serious story, but they wanted something else, of course. :guffaw: They died for no reason. Oh, you wanted the colt to kill the devil and end the story tonight? With that gun you were screaming was a deus ex machina if it could kill the devil? Ellen and Jo must die for a specific reason--not like real life where good people die in a war. And my favorite, that the writers were male chauvinist pigs for portraying two women dying bravely like soldiers.

Crazy. Me, I like that the brothers have no solution and seem to be in over their heads. They should be in over their heads. I loved the awkwardness between them at the end. These brothers aren't fully reconciled, and I like that. No easy pat solutions.

You gotta wonder if the devil is still playing the winchesters or creating his on worst nightmare.

Good episode, everyone really brought their A-game. I liked all the performances Crowley, Lucifer, Castiel, et al. The girl that played Jo came off really different tonight.

The deal is..going..down. :)

Now thats more the hell like it.

Pretty much every thing in this episode worked, some more then others, but I didn't have a problem with any aspect of this episode.

Nice to see the show (at least in the mythology episodes) really showing some nice atmosphere.

Performances across the board (with one minor exception) were solid, some very much so. I still don't care that much for the new Meg (she really doesn't share the same mannerisms that Nikki or Jared put into the character).

As for Jo and Ellen, well when spoilers revealed that two characters would die and you saw that they were part of this episode, well you new they were gator chow. But they handled both deaths, and more importantly the emotional impact between both mother and daughter, and reflected between both the brothers and Dean to both Jo and to Bobby really well. I was afraid that both were gonna die fighting in a battle scene, but I really liked this much better. Some nice closure to both characters, and this episode (unlike the last to feature Jo) manage to really show that she had really grown up.

The one thing that did disappoint me, Is I really wanted the show to be tough and take out bobby in this episode. I think to have Demons attack his place (and leave it in the state that Dean found it in the future would really, really be powerful and very shocking.

Loved the return of the classic look of Reapers, loved Ellen and Castiel doing shots, and Bobby's photo op.

Loved the guys actually talking about it being a trap, and why Sam shouldn't go. Loved the use of hell hounds (though I really, really wanted to see Sam's reaction to Dean being taken down). As that really should have hit home with him in a way that really needs to be seen, but of course using Jo to show the seriousness of the show worked well.

Crowley worked fine, and those early scenes worked in this episode nicely.

Very nice setup for the next episode, and nice way to end the 8 week break.

I think are ratings are going to suck though as we of course have premptions due to football, and I would expect our lead in audience (thanks to New Moon and hitting much of the same target audience) well be hit some what hard.

Not my favorite of the season but certainly Top Three or four.

The only bad part about tonight's episode?

A frickin' 2 month wait until the next new episode!

The deaths were great...it was GOOD to see strong female characters, although I'm sad those characters won't be able to return again. I could've done without done without the Dean angst, sorry. The whole Dean crushing on Jo thing seemed a little...forced, and I wished they had shown more with Lucifer, Castiel and Meg. Meg seemed to have no clue what Lucifer really thinks of demons. "They're just demons" as if they're just trash to be thrown out, pawns.

Crowley seemed to have the right of the situation, although I can't imagine how he DIDN'T know the colt wouldn't kill Lucifer. It also looks like Lucifer's time with his current host is running out, interesting. Great acting on his part. Outside of Ruby 2.0 (and possibly the new Meg) I don't think Supernatural has ever gone wrong in casting their guest actors.

So...we've seen war and death, that leaves pestilence and famine. Hmmm...I guess the Croatoan could count as pestilence. Wonder which we will see first, and how famine would be shown. That scene with death was quite...chilling. Not to mention War is still out there, isn't he? It should be an interesting 12 or 13 episodes left in this season.

I'm kind of beginning to hope this isn't the last season, I'll be very sad without my Sam and Dean fix :( The title of the next episode and the preview intrigued me....Sam Interrupted? Finally, a Sam episode this season!

I think that's top 10 best episodes of the series for me, the acting, the story, some of the comic relief, I'm kind of wondering if maybe the colt doesn't work on Lucifer because he's not a demon, but an angel, also wonder what the other 4 things it can't kill

what a cliffhanger though, they delivered, indeed

Would have been cool to have seen Death. All is left is Pestilence and Famine with War making a return with Apocalypse

I got the distinct impression the other four things were the Horseman. Which makes sense especially if you go with the idea that Lucifer just assumed everyone knows it wouldn't work on God himself. Some things just don't need to be said.

According to EW, they're giving Jensen Ackles the opportunity to direct the 100th episode of the show. That'll be the 18th episode of this season. I'm very interested to see what he brings to the table.

I agree to be sure.

Performances across the board (with one minor exception) were solid, some very much so. I still don't care that much for the new Meg (she really doesn't share the same mannerisms that Nikki or Jared put into the character).
Yup. The replacements have yet to live up to the original.

I REALLY liked the way they went out. They went out together and for a cause they fully believed in. But what I liked best about it is that it was ALL FOR NOTHING! That took balls by the writers. They sacrificed themselves speciofically so that Sam and Dean could kill Lucifer and it didn't happen. You knew it wouldn't happen but too many times writers find a way to have m"meaning" even in situations like this. Well, bot this time. They died for nothing essentially. I'll be SEVERELY disappointed if they don't show a lot of massive guilt on behalf of Dean and Sam in the future about this.

The one thing that did disappoint me, Is I really wanted the show to be tough and take out bobby in this episode. I think to have Demons attack his place (and leave it in the state that Dean found it in the future would really, really be powerful and very shocking.
I'm not.. gotta build up to that and I don't think we're quite there yet.

Loved the return of the classic look of Reapers, loved Ellen and Castiel doing shots, and Bobby's photo op.
All good stuff.

I liked that they used Jo in this regard rather than Sam.

Crowley worked fine, and those early scenes worked in this episode nicely.
The actor who played him is one of my favorite character actors on TV.

Very nice setup for the next episode, and nice way to end the 8 week break.
Yup. Was annoyed we have to wait until Jan.

I think are ratings are going to suck though as we of course have premptions due to football, and I would expect our lead in audience (thanks to New Moon and hitting much of the same target audience) well be hit some what hard.
Mot likely true but I hope not.

Not my favorite of the season but certainly Top Three or four.
Probably was my favorite of the season so far.

I also thought it was good work by Lucifer in comparing how Dean treats Sam to how he was treated by his brother. You coul tell it really got to Sam. Great stuff.

Now we're back on tracK!! Too bad we have too wait over a month again for the chance of a new episode!!

I thought Ellen and Jo's exit was handled nicely. It was agood thing Ellen stayed behind since Jo probably wouldn't have held out long enough to give them time to get off the roof. Only downer is that the colt didn't work. But they didn't know that at the time the two made their sacrifice.

I definitely get the feel Sam and Dean will probably be alone when the big showdown finally comes at season's end. We'll see what happens.

In the end, though, the colt really couldn't work. Too easy an out for the storyline. For fear of spoiling anyone too much, I won't mention specifics, but the second half of this season is extremely comedy light. Trust me. Have no fear. The comedy eps recently were the calm before the storm.
