Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoilerish

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

That is completely out of character for either character. Dean would never, never forgive someone (especially then) for acts that would kill Sam
True, that. Even now when he's so angry at Sam that he's seething, he screamed, "You son a bitch!" at Zachariah when he broke Sam's legs. Sam broke his heart, but he was still mad as hell at Zachariah for physically hurting him. It's gut instinct.

I gotta say I always liked Bela. I do agree that some of the writing dealing with Bela was a bit iffy though. The fact that Lauren Cohan is super hot didn't suck btw. ;)

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Bela worked best as a foil for the guys, because I didn't believe her for a second as a serious adversary or this really dangerous person with her own agenda. If they had kept her as an occasional thorn in the guys' side, I wouldn't have minded her. But her character was badly handled and I was happy to see her go. When will the networks learn???

I agree. I liked the idea of a Catwoman-type character on the show. Was she annoying? Yeah, but she was supposed to be. There was no way that character couldn't have been anything but annoying. But it was a coy, cute kind of annoying. Unlike, say Ruby. Bela was a great foil, especially for Dean. I thought the characters had great chemistry. And I wouldn't have minded seeing her and Dean hook up at some point. But the way her character was written at the end made that impossible. I wonder if she'll return in demon form at some point.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

It's time for some stunt casting. Kristin Kreuk as a succubus who can suck the life out of the entire room just by being in it. She doesn't even need to act! :p

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Lauren Cohan would make a most believable demon Bela. ;) Darnit, though, of all the semi regular 20ish ladies, I really, really enjoyed how Jo was presented in "Born Under a Bad Sign." Had the idjits originally presented her that way, the character would have been readily accepted, but they telegraphed the "meet cute, combattive love interest" thing even before the season started. Problem was, beautiful Alona Tal looked 16 while Jensen looked his age at the time, 27. Little sister indeed. It's hard to believe that cops wouldn't have asked for ID if they were ever out in public together. I'd have more easily believed Dean being sexually attracted to Ellen. She's very attractive, tough, but has a very loving side and is devoted to family. That's Dean in female form. But, apparently he thinks of her more as a mommy figure....which is okay. I love Ellen and am thrilled we'll be seeing her at least one more time. I have nothing against that, but it's so "CW." Over 40 must be "mommy."

Two words. "Hell" and "no."

I'd rather see Dean sleep with Castiel than get Lana'd again.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Oh, I just wanted to add that I really missed Carry on my Wayward Son in the recap of the previous season.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Actually, Bigfoot, they always play "Carry on My Wayward Son" at the end of the season. They use a different rock song at the beginning for "The Road So Far" beginning recap. They used Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" in season two, and "Hell's Bells" for season three. Oddly enough, I can't remember what they used at the beginning of season four. I wonder why.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

^ Really, I could have sworn they played Carry on My Wayward son at the beginning of 4x01. I did watch all four seasons in the span of about two weeks, so it's possible I mixed things up in my head.

EDIT: I just looked it up and you're totally right.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

^ Yeah I found the same info on Supernatural's version of wiki. I remember that recap... pretty cool. ;)

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

True, that. A little more interesting info. The O Death promo--in it you see a guy twisting his finger and blood is running down his head. Supposedly, that's WAR....one of the four horsemen. Doesn't look quite like Titus Welliver to me, though.

I look forward to the season finale recaps every year. "Carry on Wayward Son" is one of my favorite songs. :techman:

Just checked the promo on YouTube, and I'm fairly certain that is indeed Titus Welliver.

I loved the Motherly aspect of Samantha Ferris' Ellen. I mean a type of relationship that neither character has ever had (at least per what we have seen on the show). Ellen to me was as successful an addition to the re-occuring cast as Bobby, John and Castiel.

And Seriously Jo rocked in Born Under a Bad Sign (of course, everyone rocked in that episode, still one of my all time favorites), Alona was awesome.

And I am really curious how she'll appear in this week. Though of course, I am not expected much in the way of screen time.

I was always curious, was the decision not to use Ellen, truly mandated by the studio or was it more we have these two other characters we have to make room for and thus, just didn't have stores that she fit? I also wondered how the shortened 3rd season affected that because she was rumored at one time being in one of the scripts at one stage, at least.

Mswood, you should love this new shot from Entertainment Weekly. :bolian: Jared rocks a navy blue tee, does he not? The vampires of the hair gel and sparkles should look this masculine.

Well first week sales data are out for Supernatural season 4 on DVD. And for the first time since they started keeping track of Sales Smallville is no longer the biggest selling title for the CW (and before that well at least for one year I only have data back to 2005 for WB/UPN).

For the 2nd year in a row Superntural's initial DVD sales more then doubled from the previous year. as we sold 238,000 units generating over 8.67 million.

Up from last years 105,000 generating 4.1.

In fact those initial sales are more then what Supernatural managed in three weeks last year (when it fell out of the top 30).

And lets face it, for a show with a budget that is estimated at just over a million dollars. They will probably managed to fund nearly 10 episodes of this season off of those sales.

Dean since episode 4 has taken Heaven's side over Sam's. He choose to believe Heaven over Sam, even swearing them his service.

I disagree with this. I don't think Dean ever took Heaven's side over Sam; Sam was always his main priority. Dean didn't swear service to Heaven until the 21st episode and that was to prevent Sam from becoming the monster he'd have to become in order to kill Lilith.

Sam took Ruby's side over Dean. He choose to believe her (that Sam was the one who could stop Lilith, not Dean). Which is after all what both Ruby and all the angels have been telling both brothers was what needed to happen. Dean picked the angels over Sam on that.

Sam allowed himself to become Ruby's sucker while Dean was in hell and that was a source of confusion/concern for Dean. Dean asked Sam repeatedly why he trusted Ruby so much and why she'd become his new best friend after he returned. Yeah, Ruby and the angels were telling the brothers the same thing, Lilith had to be stopped, but for different reasons.

Now both brothers were actually right. Dean wasn't the one who was able to stop Lilith, and Dean was right that Ruby was playing Sam (of course the angels were playing Dean).

Disagree again. Sam stopping Lilith broke the final seal and allowed Lucifer to escape; hardly a win/win for Planet Earth. If Dean had prevented Sam killing Queen Skank, the final seal would have held. It's not clear to me if anyone killing Lilith would have broken the seal or only Sam. I'm sorry, but Sam is the putz going into this season. He was seduced by his evil power and Ruby the skank whispering in his ear that he was the chosen one. He had to do it. His brain should have kicked in eons ago to ask a very simple question: why is a demon on the right side?

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

Maybe it's because I'm a guy, but I don't get the fangirl's reactions to Sam and Dean. Dean seems like the one with the better looks. Is it because Sam is tall?
Sam (aka Jared) is pretty damn impressive in the flesh. Both boys are gorgeous in the face, but over the course of the show, Jared has grown up. He's like 6'5" and built like the proverbial. I could entirely understand the fangirl's reaction. But I wouldn't have been so quick to dismiss Dean either. I'd have been, "Have you boys ever considered a threesome?"

I hated that twit. She is so not the brothers type, but a good representative of that type of person in fandom. I hope we don't see her ever again. (So long weird, icky and creepy.) A little bit of her will last the whole season. As for Sam (Jared), that boy has a fantastic body and cute dimples; that said, I would never be able to choose between them.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

In real life, Jared has what is, IMO, the more engaging personality of the two. He's so outgoing while Jensen's the reserved one. I would, however, be able to keep my hands to myself. Women have actually groped them during photo ops at cons to the point where they had to start limiting them. That's pathetic. Yes, JPad is impressive looking and then some. :techman:

As for Sam, he wanted revenge....but the powerful feeling of the blood seduced him as well. Chuck nailed it. He'd felt powerless his whole life. It's an understandable downfall. Finally he was the better hunter, the stronger brother. He wasn't Azazel's victim anymore, or so he thought. Ruby was his dealer. That's how addicts behave about their dealers. If Sam can admit that to himself, and to Dean, they'll be on their way back. Dean really needs to grasp the depths of Sam's pain. Once he does that, forgiveness will come more easily.

I'm not surprised season 4 outsold Smallville.

Re: Supernatural 5x1 "Sympathy For the Devil" discussion thread/spoile

I'm guessing next episode gets better and this was just a slow set up episode, mostly filler.

This one felt meh.
