Superman

It's not just to Snyder's approach. It's kind of an interesting reversal of the everyman trope. Most, if not all, Superman stories speak to me in some way. That's the best part of it. There's not one right way to tell the story.

Hi. I posted a very lengthy review a couple days ago over at the “So What Are You Reading?: Generations” thread in the Trek Literature section about the following (here is the first paragraph…)

“Just finished reading Superman: The Action Comics Archives Volume 2 (1998). Reprints the Superman stories from Action Comics #21-36 (February 1940-May 1941; actual release dates December 1939-March 1941).”

@Commander Troi recommended I cross post it here (and making me aware of this Superman thread). Board rules don’t allow me to cross post the entire thing here, so I just wanted to make a quick mention of it for those who might want to meander over there and take a look at it.

Just read your post youngtrek. Thanks for that. What are your thoughts on Superman?

The character? Wow, he’s been my favorite superhero my entire life (although I’ve always liked pretty much any and all DC and Marvel superheroes; Batman and Spider-Man have always been close second and thirds). I recall liking Superman the George Reeves 1950s tv show reruns and on the “Super Friends”, but it was the combination of the comic book of the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s (which is when I started reading and collecting comic books) and the Christopher Reeve Superman movies that cemented my love for superheroes in general and Superman at the top of the list.

I think I have always liked Superman for basically two reasons deep down: 1) his amazing super-powers, and 2) his genuinely good natured homespun “do the right thing” and “help other people” upbringing by his adopted parents.

Yes, his Kryptonian heritage is interesting, too, but that is easily modified to fit whatever version you are reading or watching (often to fir whatever the current view of “sci-fi alien world” is). But, aside from sometimes hurting from the loss of his birth parents and one or both of the Kents (again, depending on which version it is), Superman is generally an angst and anger free character (unlike my other two favorites I mentioned, Batman and Spider-Man). Bruce Wayne is driven deep down by feelings of revenge and justice at the deaths of his parents. Peter Parker is more by guilt (and, initially, also revenge) at the death of his uncle. Clark/Kal-El is sad that he has lost loved ones but he isn’t Superman because of that. He is Superman because of his upbringing and his drive to help others.

I am reminded of how wonderful the two long sequences of Christopher Reeve as Superman in the first film are where he is simply flying around helping people (his first night in Metropolis and his flying around California rescuing people). Of course, John Williams’ landmark score drives a lot of the emotion of those sequences, but it is also Reeve’s sincerity in the role that really sells who Superman really is.

Nice video from the Superman Homepage on the classic image of Clark Kent changing into Superman in a phone booth:

The marching band bit was well done. And the music they played was quite nice as well. ;)

Not much has been heard lately about the new animated series, My Adventures with Superman, but it's just been confirmed it will premiere on Adult Swim later this year.

I'm generally not big on animated Superman productions, much preferring live-action adaptations, but I'm actually pretty interested in this one. The promotional art promises a lively, comedic vibe, which I think may work better than attempting to create exciting action-adventure in a low-budget cartoon. I'll definitely be checking it out.

Lois is the title character.

If this was my production, I'd have zero Superman in it.

Maybe just see his cape, or see him on TV or see the after math of him being Super.

This is the night time block of Adult swim.

Lois is going to be using coarse launage about how she wants to have sex with Superman to Clark.... And that will be fine because "Isn't he gay? I thought he was gay. Hey Clark you're into dudes right?"

They probably put this into production back when they guessed wrong that Velma was going to do very well.

It is interesting that neither of the promotional images released to date features Superman in costume. Character designs and interviews that have come out definitely indicate Supes will be a presence, however (though I'd personally be down with your idea).
Adult Swim? I thought it was a HBO Max show
It was, now it's not. Which works for me, because fuck streaming.

Wasn't that the original pitch for Lois & Clark? Them they added "The New Adventures of Superman" subtitle when they decided to go more traditional.

Sounds like a good idea being chipped away at until there was no real reason to have cancelled Superboy.

I'm actually stealing from a comic book title called Spider-Man loves Mary-Jane, where they are both Teenagers, and she does not know that he is Peter, and the god's view of the illustrator avoids that fact too.
