Superman

I never thought of it that way before @Realist, but it's a good point. I have always loved Supes (and every hero) best when he's about power *in service* to a higher purpose, not for it's own sake. With his abilities, he could easily subjugate the world. But that's not who he is. He genuinely loves Earth and humanity and everything he does comes from that core.

Kids have always been like this. One of youth's affectation that they outgrow.
I disagree. I'm 53 and haven't "outgrown" it yet. I'm (hopefully) less arrogant and more thoughtful now, but I still question societal norms. Maybe you need to hang out with more young people.

There's a lot to be said for the most successful and beloved screen interpretation of Superman being the one who had the lengthy '70s and '80s romance with Margot Kidder's Lois Lane and who was portrayed as more gentle and peaceful than many later interpretations, and this was from the less culturally-enlightened period around 1978.

You might like the “Superman ‘78” comic books out. Hackman’s Luthor winds up Clark’s ally against a Yul Brynner Braniac.

I'm 36 and I've become less and less a believer in societal norms as I've gotten older. I was much more conservative, both personally and politically, when I was a teenager and a college student.

And I definitely don't think this new era of large numbers of teenagers and young adults adopting queer sexual and gender identities is just a function of kids being kids. There has never been such widespread acceptance of transgender and nonbinary gender identities before in Western history, for instance. I think we're at the start of a great shift in societal norms regarding gender identities (and still in the middle of a great shift regarding sexual orientations), and society is in the process of generating new customs to go with these shifts. I expect in a few decades, we'll look back on, say, the pre-2010s and just be shocked and appalled at the lack of etiquette around these issues.

YES! I am glad someone said that, Christopher Reeve's interpretation of the man of steel was an iconic one for sure.

I did like the one we got in the live action Man Of Steel as well but not a fan of one of the animated versions we got in one of those movies he seems a bit too kill happy. I think it was Justice League Dark, I only saw that once a while ago and didn't want to watch it ever again.

It was JL "Dark". :D

That's awesome!

I’m surprised she didn’t mention Superman Returns along with the Donner films. It was supremely romantic and was remains, IMO, as good a presentation of Superman as the Donner’s Suoes.

The scene on the airplane where Supes tells Lois goodbye (this time), then flys above the clouds and gets rejuvenated by the yellow sun is one of the most iconic of all the Superman movies. The podcaster must not have seen this movie.

Although I don’t agree with the podcaster that Suoes has to be directed by a woman, I agree with her about Snyder’s presentation of the character as a brooding, stoic figure, was all

I would definitely see another Singer directed Suoes, and I certainly would not object to a woman director solely because of gender.

Why would it matter WHO the hell is directing it?

As for Superman Returns, I agree. Brandon Routh is great in it. What I like about it is this: Richard White isn't a dick.

99% of the time, when something like this happens, the new husband is a total sleazeball whose sole function in the plot is to be shoved out of the way so Our Hero can get the girl back. Glad they didn't do that here.

I'm sure that part of Superman's powers is the ability to precisely control said powers.

He wouldn't rip right through something unless he specifically intended to do so.

Which is why "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" would never happen. ;)

Howcome they can't do this on that other show? In The Boys Homelander says he can't do that because he'd rip right through a falling plane? Doesn't he have control of his similar powers?

That's what made me wonder if Superman might have similar issues.

John Byrne, in the 80s-ish, said that Superman flies by psionically manipulating gravitons, so when he picks up a boat or a plane, his brain is causing the boat or plane to fly too.

I also remember this quote "Things get lighter the higher I fly" which could be about graviton density, or being minutely closer to the sun, or away from planetary shielding from the sun.

I doubt any one else can remembers this.

Me either. You are a font of nerdy information.

I remember. I posted about this several years ago in a Supergirl thread. Kryptonian super feats are split between John Carter of Mars/Earth's weaker gravity and telekinesis.

Byrne used the telekinetic explanation for Gladiator during his FF run and used the same explanation during his Superman run.

DC's main explanation really boils down to "because he's Superman". They don't feel it needs an explanation.

I remember, too, and I also posted about this before. I may also have mentioned that there actually was a book collecting all the pseudo-scientific explanations for Superman's various powers, which I owned and at least partially read.
