That was pretty fun. My wife and I watched Smallville when it premiered in 2001, so it seems somewhat fitting that we're watching this 20 years later with our daughter.
I liked the "to do" list on the kitchen blackboard you can see behind Clark. Something like

Melissa Benoist was pregnant most of last year. Delivered her first child in September. No doubt that was a factor in her absence.
The name Foswell for the current Daily Planet editor seemed vaguely familiar.

Overall I liked it more than I thought it would. I'm happy they're not completely foregoing the superhero aspect of Superman here, like they often have with other versions of Superman and Lois on TV.
Also while they did allude to it being part of the Arrowverse; it's clear they want to rewrite and reset certain aspects of the arrowverse with respect to this particular show; and their version of Crisis on Unfinite Earths allows them to do just that.
It's also pretty clear that both the CW and Melissa Benoist herself have already moved on from Supergirl. Yes there's one more season of 20 episodes to film; but with the COVID-19 situation, Big crossovers are a thing of the past, so it doesn't surprise me that Kara/Supergirl wasn't even mentioned here, and unlike the first season of Supergirl, didn't even get a mention or a text in for the death of Martha Kent.
That's not to say they may not do a crossover again one or two seasons down the road assuming COVID-19 becomes less of a threat over the next couple of years; but like the Star Girl series - the connections to the wider Arrowverse are going to be very underplayed.
I do like that they didn't try to completely reset or get rid of Jon Cryer's version of Lex Luthor; which I personally do enjoy as part of the Arrowverse; and bringing in a Lex Luthor from a universe destroyed as part of their CoIE makes for an interesting situation in that this particular Luthor must be more highly intelligent; and for all we know could have managed to already outright kill the Superman of his universe; thus making him a real deadly threat to the Arrowverse Superman.
The other thing I like from a continuity perspective was the fact they had a scene with "early Superman" wearing a costume harkening back to the 1940s version of Superman's suit, showing that he has gone through multiple versions of the costume over his career, so that even makes the transition from the "Supergirl" version of his suit (which I did like) to one that appears more like the Henry Cavill/DCEU version of the suit not so unusual.
Overall I thought it had a good mix of family/Superman action, and overall I hope they keep that up for the run of the series, but we'll see.

I also found it interesting that for a series that is on CW television; they are using a feature film aspect ratio for it. That's another aspect that already sets it apart from the other Arrowverse entries.
From an ongoing production standpoint, I must say this pilot was top heavy with respect to the number of "producers", "executive producers" and even a "produced by" title in the opening credits. It seems there are a lot of "Cooks" involved with this series, and that could be a good or bad thing going forward, but we'll see.

I'm betting both sons will have their dad's powers, just acquiring them at different rates and different order as to which powers they will develop.

Damn, good opening sequence. They hooked me less than two minutes in when they used not only the original costume, but one of my fave Superman lines. "Thanks, my Mom made it for me." The whole 'recap' was fantastic. And then the remake of the reactor scene in Superman III, complete with a recreation of the shot in Superman Returns where he lifts the island...uh, the show is completing me so far. So happy that the show actually is the style that the trailers made it seem.
Great to see Michele Scarabelli again after all this time, even if it did take me a minute to recognize her. And the farmer dude from the pilot of Smallville was there too, probably no coincidence.
The angry teens drama isn't my bag for the most part, but definitely on board for the show as of now.

Was there some reason why they chose not to show Alt-Luthor's face?

The production values of the opener are head-and-shoulders above the standard CW DC shows. That, and the somewhat less superficial tone of the show, gives one hope for the Green Lanterns series on HBOMAX; everything from these guys doesn't have to be so lightweight.
I honestly wasn't surprised at all. I assume they want the show to stand on its own and not depend upon the years of continuity accreted into the Arrowverse. From the presentation, they want it to be easy for people to climb aboard. Everything we needed to know was in the prolog intro.

This was better than I thought it would be. Sinister reverse mortgages is an intriguing premise, and hats off to the production for moving the Kents to Smallville. I'm aboard.
My only quibble is that I lost track of what Jordon did with the amber-colored crystal given to him by the spaceship. I'd expect it to be followed up on, given how important it potentially could have been. Perhaps Clark or Lois grabbed it out of his hand, and I blinked and missed it.
Also, I hope that Lana was just ignorant and that she doesn't turn out to be allied with the evil side in this incarnation.
Oh, I have no doubt Jordan still has that crystal, and that it will turn up again soon.
I was surprised that Clark let him keep it, is what I'm saying, hence the quibble. But if he has his x-ray eye on it to keep track of it, well, I guess it's OK.
I need to watch that movie again; this reminds me why I really like it.

Steve Lombard is a character from the comics. He writes for the DP’s sports section and a former football player, depending on the continuity.

Hopefully the production value and style lasts and isn't just a 'pilot special' type thing. Arrow had a very tight and good looking premiere. Especially the scenes on the island at the start. Then over time its quality dropped and you basically see/saw the same type of production value and camera shots from all the other "arrowverse shows" pretty much
