Studios sources tell us that that Superman will see at least a $200M global start at 60,000 global screens, split evenly between domestic and overseas. Stateside, we’re hearing that presales are at $20M, which is ahead of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118.4M) and behind fellow 2023 release Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($106.1M). Stateside, rivals — some tracking firms and exhibitors’ internal estimates — believe Superman flies to $115M-$130M.

What could put this over the top? Reviews, which currently stand at 85% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes — roughly equal to the review rating of the original 1978 Richard Donner Superman starring Christopher Reeve. That will convince the adults to go see this next rendition. Those reviews are leaps and bounds higher than Snyder’s 2013 reboot Man of Steel (57% rotten), his 2016 faceoff Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (23%) and Bryan Singer’s 2006 Superman Returns at 72%.

BTW, Mr. Terrific needs his own project ASAP. It should be the next DC project up on HBOMAX if theatrical is too booked out. Maybe they should move another theatrical to make it happen, dependent on scripts.

He could even bring GL and Hawkgirl along. You need a supporting cast.

Honestly, the DCU also does not need Hawkman again soon. Aldis Hodge played him pretty definitively in Black Adam. Give Hawkgirl his seat in the JL.

It's funny, without even going online to spoil myself, I can guess who the two unannounced cameos are.
One, because her film has already wrapped production.
Two, because the Justice Squad cameos in his trailer.
There has to be some overlap.

Say, what are the ground rules going to be in this topic?

Will we need a separate topic when enough people have seen the film that the discussion will naturally include spoilers?

Which will likely be the case no later than Saturday afternoon.

On other topics - I didn't cry during the movie, but my eyes welled up more times than I can count. That's never happened when watching a superhero movie, before (yes, I do have a tendency to cry during movies). The sincerity of the performances had me really invested in the characters.

My wife has watched the Guardians movies more times then I can count, and she cries during all of them every time. Something about the way Gunn directs just gets her.

Spoiler code until the film officially opens. Then it's fair game! Keep away if you don't want to be spoiled!!! Me I'll be bowing out until Sunday.

Okay.

You know, there's so much that goes on in this movie, and everyone's got at least a few good bits, the supporting characters have agency and move the story in ways that they never have in previous Superman movies - I mentioned Mr. Terrific, but they could spin off a goddamn Jimmy Olsen TV project from this film.

They really could.
At the film’s L.A. premiere on Monday, Gunn mentioned what he hoped to show differently in this superhero.

“I wanted to believe Superman, so I wanted to show him in this gigantic DC universe, this magical world that’s like from the comic books, where we’re entering how I entered as a child — with Superman, with superhuman friends, with giant robots, with Kaiju, with all of that,” Gunn said. “I wanted to have that but at the same time, really get to know him — get to know his personality, who he is, what his relationship with Lois is like, what his beliefs are, what his strengths are, what his flaws are.”

"...At this point, it’s rare for superhero films to give a sense of wonder and a reminder of how beautiful these films can be when executed well. But Gunn has brought optimism, hope and care back to Superman. It ends up becoming one of the best DC films in years and one of the best movies of the summer. This universe could be great, and Gunn has the light to show the way for where the DCU could go.”

So, I guess I'll just be spoiler-coding this whole damn message.

I'm surprised that there has not been much commentary and controversy online, especially among the folks unfriendly to the film, about

The left turn that Clark's origin story has taken in the DCU.

Not that it doesn't fit terribly well with earlier film portrayals of the Kryptonians as supremely arrogant and ridiculously committed to some monolithic culture with totalitarian leanings and an overweening sense of racial destiny. But Jor-El and Lara have always been implied to be such fine exceptions.

It's sure in line with the sweep of Snyder's vision of Krypton.

What makes it so unexpected and startling here is that it cuts so against the grain of the sunny Silver Age vibe that swathes the whole concept of the movie. There's not a lot of skeptical revisionism to be seen here, other than this rather important exception.

Also, while I'm at it - I'm a little unsure about encouraging my daughter to take the grandkids to Superman because of the Russian Roulette scene. That is so brutal and unexpected. Guess there's a reason for PG-13 after all.
