Supergirl TV Series is being work on.

The flying shots on Smallville were spectacular. Better than anyone expected at the time. Any reason they couldn't do more of that?

Of course, the television universe and the movie universe could just be on different Earths in the same multiverse, allowing for a one or two time crossover with actors from the movies.

I look forward to Supergirl slaying vampires in Mystic Falls or New Orleans. Klaus has met his match! :p

When you look at the amount and quality of effects in the new Flash series, I don't really see flying being much of an issue for Supergirl. Obviously they won't be able to have her engaging in massive MOS-style battles in the sky or fighting giant robots, but it should still be possible to do some simpler transition shots of her flying through the clouds to her destination or wherever.
Simple transition shots would get old pretty quickly. And the Flash series has a serious advantage in that they can shoot background plates and such at ground level. For convincing and satisfying photoreal Supergirl effects, they'd have to render whole cities from the air, just as Marvel had to build a digital NYC for The Avengers.

And that costs a heck-ton.

^Or they could just fly around in a helicopter and shoot an actual city from the air.

Then again, it's not unprecedented for TV series to use virtual cityscapes. Caprica's cityscapes of Caprica City were basically shots of Vancouver, but with extensive digital enhancement. Gotham will be doing the same with New York City, adding "gothic" buildings and gargoyles and such digitally to make it look more like Gotham. It's surprising how much CGI is in routine use on TV today, because it's usually invisible.

They can now use drone cameras as well as CGI, I imagine similar flying effects will used in Fox's Greatest American Hero pilot.

Drones have really opened the doors for a more dramatic yet economical way of filming, haven't they?

Oh, that's right. I remember seeing a "Superman's POV" fan film that was shot using a drone camera. Yeah, here it is. It really does open up a lot of impressive possibilities for flying effects.

^ Great clip. I love how seamless everything was.

Here's the 'making of' video...

I'm surprised that it's legal to fly those things around like that.

Well I suppose they could always limit her powers a bit, or say she hasn't fully mastered flight yet and only does it when she absolutely has to. Or maybe she's trying really hard to be a normal teenage girl and doesn't want to draw too much attention to herself just yet.

Because obviously, like with Smallville or any other Supergirl/boy/man series, they'll have to find some reason why the character isn't using their incredible powers to save people all around the world, 24 hours a day. So it'll most likely end up being something along those lines.

I doubt it is. LA's legal authorities might let a small outfit get away with it for an isolated incident or two, but a regular TV series would certainly have to get right with the proper authorities and bureaus. What happens if the battery fails, and the drone just drops from the sky? In a crowded city, involuntary manslaughter, that's what happens.

The only way I could see a full-on live-action Supergirl show working is if it transitioned to overt animation for the flying/action sequences, with maybe some hybrid shots featuring the actors. I'd be open to that if done well, but I kinda doubt general audiences would be.

I still don't see what's so impossible about just using background plates shot from helicopters or rooftops, like TV shows and movies have been doing for decades. Just because we have some snazzier and more versatile alternatives now, that doesn't mean the basics have somehow stopped working. The problem with modern technology is that it gives us amnesia about how much prior generations were able to achieve without it.

And that would suck. considering how many times it's been done.

Well as long as they don't limit her as much as Clark on Smallville, I think it'd be okay. So maybe she fully knows how to fly and do all those other things already, but is simply being a bit more secretive about how she goes about it.

I mean it's not like she's going to be leaping into the air every five minutes on this show anyway. Being a weekly TV series, they'll obviously have to surround her with a lot of high school drama and other ground-based stuff to fill up air time and make the show even remotely affordable in the first place.

That's part of the reason I dislike on some level shows revolving around Superman. You just can't do that level of power justice on a TV budget.

^ Yep. Especially given Supes' centrality to the DCCU, I don't see this project actually getting produced any more than I did the Del Toro-back Hulk TV series project. And we all remember how many seasons that one ran. :p

I see this show having the same chance of happening as that Wonder Woman show on NBC a year or two back.

What about making her really young?

Nothing sexual.

Cast a ten year old.

She's all golly Gee Zoey 101 one second, and throwing tanks over the horizon the next.
