Spoilers Supergirl - Season 3

Well, once again I will simply say, I liked it.

For those of you predicting Alex taking on Ruby, I think you might be right although it would be a sad thing to take away one mom living a double life and give her another leading ostensibly another double one.

The Lena / Jimmy thing has been telegraphed for so long I was wondering if they were saving it for after the hiatus. I was laughing though, as the two were making out just as Reign was hovering over the building, waiting to square off against Supergirl. Talk about bad timing!

During the fight, when they kept cutting back to Jimmy and Lena's horrified faces, I was half wondering if Jimmy would yell out "KARA!" only to have a stunned Lena turn toward him in explanation. Speaking of explanation, I wonder how they will explain her absence from Catco to Lena and along those lines will Cat Grant show up to visit her in her DEO hospital bed.

Will being beaten half to death drain enough out of Kara to allow Alex to get an IV through that invulnerable skin of hers, or is that not the same thing as using up her energy through intensive heat vision use like last season?

Well I just realized that this scene from Supergirl season 1 now has way more weight in retrospect, with regard to "Crisis on Earth-X".

That was the case when after Superman fought Doomsday so why not.

And the image of her in the broken concrete is almost a shot for shot with dead Superman in the comics. No cape flag, and her uniform isn't all torn up, but seemed like a direct homage there.

Legends of Tomorrow is set to temporarily replace Supergirl in February and March.

On Friday, The CW announced that its Arrowverse schedule is getting a bit of a shakeup in the new year. Legends of Tomorrow is moving away from its 9pm slot on Tuesday nights, and taking over Supergirl's Monday night lead-off.

Starting with its midseason premiere on February 12, Legends of Tomorrow will air on Monday nights at 8pm, starting off the week for The CW. This will last for nine weeks, until the season finale of Legends on April 9.

So, what does that mean for Supergirl?

Unfortunately, Supergirl will now enjoy two significant breaks. The series will return on January 15, the same week as Arrow and The Flash, and air for about a month on Monday nights. Then, on February 12, Supergirl will take another hiatus while Legends finishes its third season.

On April 16, one week after Legends airs its season finale, Supergirl will return to its usual place on Monday nights. Consecutive episodes will air until June 18.

So, a month long break for Supergirl from December until January, and then a second two month break from February until April. As if Supergirl's ratings this season haven't been bad enough already...

Damn. Well, at least we'll still have four DC series on The CW per week, thanks to Black Lightning taking over LoT's slot (hey, that's an anagram!).

That means two uninterrupted runs of episodes with an uninterrupted run of LoT in between.
I much prefer that than the usual random few weeks on, few weeks off.

Both shows are practically guaranteed a renewal, so even if ratings are affected it doesn't really matter.

P.S. This means Supergirl has 23 episodes this season, longest season yet.

Ugh, me no like. Supergirl is far and away my favorite of the Arrowverse shows, though I watch and enjoy them all. I knew Legends was returning in a Monday slot, but I assumed it would be following Sg at 9, after Valor finished its half-season run. Totally wasn't expecting Supergirl to be dropped from the schedule for weeks, and it certainly doesn't say anything good about the CW's regard for the show. :(

That's not necessarily true. It just means they have to balance all their shows, and they only have 10 hours a week to fit them all in. They have more shows than time slots, and so they need to stagger shows' releases in the schedule, which is why iZombie isn't back yet. Lots of networks these days have practically year-round schedules, airing different shows at different times of year, so simply delaying a show doesn't necessarily reflect a lack of confidence in it.

^ Still, I don't see them jerking The Flash around on the schedule. Though some have suggested this may be motivated at least in part by production needing to shake out the Kreisberg thing, which might make some sense.

Sure, but The Flash is their top-rated series. That doesn't mean any other given one of their series is worse off than the rest. After all, they can only have one top show.

Maybe. But wouldn't that have affected The Flash too?

Precisely. This is about providing the network with first run programming on consecutive weeks throughout the season, and should not be considered a ding at Supergirl. The number of weeks off for SG would have occured regardless of sharing the timeslot with Legends. Reruns perform badly in the ratings and eliminating them will only improve the CW's overall season performance.
Plus, CW prez Mark Pedowitz stated back during the summer press tour that he didn't want to program 5 DC shows on the schedule at the same time. This way, he gets to keep his wish with Black Lightning airing after Flash. With this news, I'll wager iZombie inherits the Monday spot after SG/Legends. Now where does The 100 go? I don't see it fitting on Fridays with Jane the Virgin. And disrupting Supernatural and Arrow on Thursdays doesn't seem likely. Same for Riverdale & Dynasty on Wednesdays. Too many shows, not enough time!!!!

Originally before Legends first aired I thought CW mentioned doing something like this, Alternating the DC shows to prevent long stretches of reruns. It was a surprise that they did not do that until now. Even though Legends has fewer episodes they kept its premieres and finales tied to the same weeks of the shows with longer seasons.

I am a little annoyed because Supergirl is my favorite show right now. Hopefully that Fourth episode has a fitting ending before the 9 week hiatus. Not a sudden cliffhanger after just having one.

This probably has no reflection on Cw's opinions of these shows. If anything it means Supergirl is more important saving it's finale for May sweeps in its normal time slot. While Legends keeps getting bounced around the schedule.

I'm suddenly reminded of the "wheel" shows they had back in the '70s, where 3-4 shows would rotate in a single weekly time slot -- e.g. Columbo one week, McCloud the next, McMillan and Wife the next, etc. Of course, that meant each show in the wheel would get only about a third or a fourth as many episodes per season.

But imagine if maybe four Arrowverse shows shared two time slots by airing on alternate weeks -- say, Supergirl and The Flash one week, Legends and Arrow the next in the same time slots, then back.

Speaking of Columbo, wouldn't it be refreshingly different if these season arcs were presented like Columbo episodes. All these series have season long mysteries about who the villians are and what their secret plots involve. What if at the beginning of the season the audience learn all that upfront. Than we watch the heroes figure out and expose the truth. I think that would be interesting as a one time creative experiment. If not a whole season a mini arc.

Here's an amazing video that features the midseason finale's final act.

Speaking of the ratings...

I said this elsewhere, but this move is only unusual in that it's not something that generally happens; it doesn't say anything about either show's future beyond this season, though, as it's purely scheduling-related.

Yes. It seems most likely to me that it's occasioned by the premiere of Black Lightning, meaning there are now five Berlanti-made DC series on the network instead of four. Naturally that makes the available space for the DC shows a bit more crowded, so something had to give.
