I don't think the DEO houses prisoners in this "downtown" facility; the impression I got is that it's analogous to the various FBI field offices that dot the United States.

Barry says "you have a central city but no star labs, no cisco ramon etc". I wonder if that is a mistake in the script and it should have been "star city" instead of "central city". It would make sense for him to say that there is a star city but no star labs. Saying that there is a central city but no star labs makes no sense since star labs is not located in central city. But since there is no star labs, we can either assume that there is no star city at all, or there is a star city but it lacks a star labs.

^ Starr Labs is Harrison Wells' company, and is where "Team Flash" has their base of operations, so it and Star City have nothing to do with one another. Star City is called Star City because it's a shortened portmanteau of Starling City, and was first coined by Ray Palmer.
If I remember correctly, Star Labs had (at least) a warehouse in Star City. (Arrow Season 2 when Deathstroke raided it) but yeah, the lab facility we're used to is in Central City

Wow, that was a great season premiere.
I loved seeing Kara and Kal-El working together so much.
Tyler Hoechlin was great as Superman. Him being mad as J'Onn about him having kryptonite added a nice bit of backstory.
I was surprised to see Mon-El actor Chris Wood in the main cast, I was expecting to see him as just a recurring character

Cat's new assistant being being Tessmacher was a nice reference to the Christopher Reeve movies.
I'm a big fan of Katie McGrath from her time as Morgana on Merlin, so I really like seeing her here, although I did hear her accent slip a bit. I really hope she is telling the truth about her motives, I would like that more than just another double cross.
I am disappointed they already putting an end to the Kara/James relationship, but at least they came up with a reasonable justification.
The end was a cool bit of set up for The Doctor and Metallo.

S.T.A.R. Labs is short for Science and Technology Advanced Research Laboratories. It debuted in the Superman comics in 1971, and was the base of operations of Superman's ally Professor Emil Hamilton. I believe it first became associated with the Flash in 1987, when Tina McGee was introduced as a STAR Labs scientist studying the Flash and a romantic interest for him. That's why STAR Labs and Tina were such a central part of the 1990 TV series, and that was no doubt an influence on its use as a major setting of the current Flash series. It was also regularly featured in Superman: The Animated Series and Young Justice.

Midvale is from the comics. It's where Supergirl (in her original incarnation) grew up. Superman placed her in Midvale Orphanage after she arrived on Earth, and she remained there until being adopted by Fred and Sylvia Danvers.Considering we're talking a fictional universe with city name like 'Metropolis', or 'Central City', or 'National City, or 'Opal City', etc; that entry [Midvale] seems pretty normal for that world.
I wasn't saying that "Midvale" was a generic name, but that "Midvale Newspaper" was a generic name for a newspaper (as opposed to Midvale Times, Midvale Sun, whatever).
In-story, that makes sense, but I'm thinking in production terms. Presumably they only have so much money and space for sets, so this DEO set is probably meant to replace the original, not coexist with it. So if they want to do stories about alien prisoners, they'll probably set them here instead of rebuilding the sets for the old HQ. Although I guess they could just rebuild the "cell" set without the rest.
They have just revealed a big change is on the way for James.

Interesting. I see the fallout from--
--leading to conflict between the two. James has a stronger sense of justice than any other character on series, so that poses certain problems of approach to handling crime. However, if they are stepping away from that relationship, I find the move cowardly--as if the producers caved to the innumerable, loud whining of so-called fans who hated the very idea of James (always the "they should not change the character to black" / "it should be Winn...Flash...anyone else") and having any romantic connection to Kara.
When the show debuted last year I said that it felt like the first time we had a true Superman show since the Donner movies, even though Superman wasn't in it. I am biased being a boyhood fan of the Reeve Superman. But I have I have to say that I already prefer this incarnation to Cavill's. It's not because I don't care for Cavill., who is fine in the role. It's the world he inhabits. For me the character is all about inspiration and hope, and I am very pleased to see that on display on this show, not just for Superman but of course the lead character as well. I didn't watch all of season one and probably won't do so this time around, most likely just tuning in for the special episodes such as Superman appearances. But I like where this is going and I'd be happy to see a spin off about Tyler's Superman.
You mean, CW, of course. The WB (and UPN) are so last decade.
But, yes, the idea is that SUPERGIRL will be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.
