Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

.
It was Supergirl's season premiere Monday and all people can talk about is Superman. A Superman tv show would completely supplant Supergirl's role and what they want to accomplish with her. Remember how SG ended with CBS. It's not like TPTB wanted to renew the show there.

..and the DC TV material is already viewed as a lower class cousins of the DC movies, so their core TV series do not need any other "distractions" by launching a series starring a character that's part of the Mount Rushmore of superheroes, while the other characters have nowhere near that kind of cultural appeal, market value, etc.

Also there's SG's penchant for taking characters, stories, references and attributes from Superman's mythos and applying them to Kara. As well other characters and stories that aren't directly affiliated with Superman or Supergirl (like Arrow does with other DC IPs) in order to make episodes. There really wouldn't be much room for a unique Superman show. I imagine we'd get something akin to Smallville 2.0. Given Hoechlin's big Teen Wolf fan base and it being on the CW.

Agreed.

And that's why they'll be fools not to capitalize on that.

Here's
our first look at James as Guardian:

Cool, but… shouldn't there be some/any gold?

I'm far more interested in seeing Supergirl continue than in seeing a Superman spinoff. Part of the beauty of the Supergirl premise is that, not only do we get elements of Superman, but also we get in Kara a character who hadn't been explored as much as Clark. I'm not quite ready complain about making Kara a reporter yet, but I really hope they go off in different directions than those that we've seen for Clark.

Someone remind me: are metahumans/non-metahuman vigilantes under the DEO's purview, or is the DEO exclusively dedicated to extraterrestrial affairs?

Another reason it's a good fit for a superhero just occurred to me, it's a good excuse for why they're always leaving when a crisis happens. They can just say they need to go out to cover the crisis in person, and then just run off without anybody giving it a second thought.

Exactly. Cops paramedics and the like have to go where they're sent and are actually missed if they disappear when something big happens. Nobody notices when a reporter ducks around the corner and out of sight.

Well it's stands for "Department of Extra-Normal Operations" so metas would seem to fall under that.

The Department of Extra-Normal Operations.

Their mandate is unclear, but they're unlikely to stand down over a jurisdictional dispute if some #### is trying to destroy Cleveland.

The tv series has tried to lay out the DEO as solely for aliens, but the comics had it also for meta humans. The tv series is about to add in the Science Police (a division of the local National City Police Department), and they are likely to start handling metas and tech.

It makes sense in a way. A federal agency would ultimately handle illegal immigration (aliens) while a local agency would handle crimes committed in a city / state.

The DEO is nominally focused on aliens, but it broadened its purview to help Supergirl deal with non-alien threats. We saw in "World's Finest" that they were holding Livewire, although that ended once the Flash taught the NCPD (offscreen) how to build metahuman containment tech.

I like having Superman as a supporting character who appears occasionally because then he's a fully realized character and he doesn't have go through some long-suffering character arc. He's just Superman in all his perfection.

It's true that the bar would be higher for a Superman TV series, and from what I've seen of Berlanti's shows so far I don't know that these writers and producers would be quite up to it. Having him pop in for three or four sweeps episodes every year on Supergirl is probably about right.

It definitely feels like there was an "unseen" Superman prequel show in the SG continuity that we have never seen, that mixes the favored parts of Donner, SR, Smallville and Lois and Clark together, giving the illusion of being the Superman that everyone wants or expects.

And maybe some day, we will get to see him die, and get an awesome Cadmus/Superboy/Dean Cain Cyborg Superman/Eradicator/Steel arc from Kara's perspective, before he gets a Triumphant return and the same guest actor for all the shows contract a few other characters are getting. Or a couple CW TV movies a year.... that could be pretty awesome.

Except I wonder how interesting a show it would've been, because he never took on Metallo, Bizarro, Toyman, Livewire, Silver Banshee, or Maxwell Lord. So he would've been missing a lot of his rogues' gallery. We know he spent a while fighting Lex Luthor and finally won, but the only other adversary of his that we know of is Reactron, who somehow managed to fight him to a draw repeatedly. Oh, and Maxima, but we don't know if Superman actually defeated her, since she's in DEO custody and Superman doesn't work with the DEO. And it seems unlikely that he fought Zod, since Astra pretty much replaced Zod in the storyline.

There are other villains we can't rule out in Superman's past, like Brainiac or Darkseid or Intergang or Parasite or Mxyzptlk or, I dunno, Titano. But the show may want to use them in future stories, with or without a prior history against Superman.

Well, hopefully in next week's episode, we'll get some more discussion of some of Superman's past battles. Or maybe they could do a future episode where, say, Superman is hurt by Parasite or Darkseid or someone and Supergirl has to go to his aid. (It'd be nice to visit Metropolis and meet Lois and Perry.)

Maybe I'm thinking too deep, but to me it seems kind of meta - Superman existed for decades without much of a Rogues gallery, fighting random aliens, mad scientists, gangsters and natural disasters before developing the modern day rogue's gallery since... well, post crisis. Likewise, this Superman seems to have a classic history vs. Lex and earthquakes and aliens and such, but the modern age metahuman Rogue's gallery is just developing now. It seems almost fitting for a throwback smiling Superman to follow this sort of trajectory. There could have been a fight with Zod and other Kryptonians in the past, because J'onn acknowledges the danger other Kryptonians present, even years before. We know Toyman existed, even if he didn't face off with Superman that we know about. It seems like he could have had a pretty interesting pre-history without going full scale into metahumans and rogues.

I don't see why this Superman can't have had some tough battles with others to come. He's had enough that he's matured and is experienced. But there are still many tests to face (which could form the basis of a spin off).

Well, that's not true. Superman had a number of recurring foes. The Ultra-Humanite debuted in the first year. The Golden Age gave us Luthor, Prankster, Toyman, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. The Silver Age (c. 1956-1970) gave us Brainiac, Bizarro, Metallo, Titano, Jax-Ur, Zod, the Composite Superman, and the Parasite. And the Bronze Age (c. 1970-1986) introduced Morgan Edge and Mongul -- as well as Darkseid, the New Gods, and Intergang over in Jack Kirby's run on Jimmy Olsen.

When people say Superman didn't have much of a rogues' gallery, they mean that he didn't have that many really good villains compared to Batman or the Flash -- at least, not ones serious or dangerous enough to be considered worth reviving in the post-Crisis era, when comics (and their animated adaptations) were trying to be seen as mature and sophisticated.

Other than Luthor, Superman's recurring villains have never been particularly important because his core identity is not that of a crimefighter.

Given the history of the Guardian, could we be getting a twist on the secret identity concept? What if Guardian is a clone with the real guy walking around unaware.
Given the history of Jimmy Olsen, I expect many clones, green clones and maybe a turtle.

I had a dream early this morning where Cat had called Kara into her office to get her advice about her (Cat's) new career path, which was to become a radio host -- which would be quite a hugely backward career move, I see now that I'm awake. But in the dream, Cat was pretty nervous about it and making totally lame suggestions for what to call the show -- tending toward some kind of lame puns on "Nosferatu" to play up her nasty image or something. And Kara was being all sensitive and patient, calling her "Honey" and encouraging her to focus more on content, reminding her of times in the first season when Cat had made inspiring broadcasts and talked about important ideas and the like. And it became evident that Cat was trying to seduce Kara into becoming her producer, and I mean literally seduce her, because she leaned closer until she actually kissed Kara, and several of the screens on Cat's wall began displaying spinning images like a video slot machine rolling up a jackpot. And then Kara frowned and asked Cat if she'd had her videographers make the screens do that to make her think that this relationship (professional or personal) was meant to be.

I'm a bit surprised that my dream went there, because Cat/Kara is not a ship that interests me except as a mentor/protegee sort of thing. And the role reversal in terms of confidence and need for advice was a bit odd, though I could see something similar happening if Cat really were nervous about her new career. Still, it's more coherent than most of my dreams.
