Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

Before the spoilers start, everyone have fun with the first part of the crossover today, even if it's just a prelude.
I won't be able to watch until tomorrow due to not being in the US and am still fighting with myself about watching it daily or waiting till friday to watch it in a single go.
Just can't deciiiide!

Yeah. Normally don't watch supergirl but it being billed as the first part of a crossover event tuned into it. Lame. Hardly part of a big crossover event. More like a supergirl standalone with a cameo by Barry and Cisco. But it did remind me why I normally don't watch

"Medusa"--

Kara/SG: How is she not understanding the reasoning behind her father's work? Hank gets it. It's not holding hands skipping across fields of flowers when facing invasion and/or a threat to the entire species.

James: James should not feel a need to tell Kara his secret; his purpose is to feel like he's contributing more to society, and he does not need lectures on danger, or feel someone will always be worried about him like he's some child on training wheels.

Mama Luthor & Lena: Predictable. Lena opposing Mama seemed like BS from the start. Too bad Lena does not have bigger plans--something that is beyond Cadmus--usurping her mother as the lead alien hunter, but not as some ally to SG based on yet another "you're different" and "hope" speech.

A clever turn for the series would be the the imprisonment of Mama, and somehow she contacts Lex, and together (whether one or both are free) unleash Hell on Lena, SG and anyone in sight.Perfect way to introduce Lex to the series (if that's a possibility).

Mon-El: Of course, it was clear as day that being attacked by Cyborg Hank and the no-development flirty alien meeting her end will personalize the anti-alien campaign for Mon-El, and stir ideas about changing his life's direction. send him into the hero business.

[sarcasm]Yeah, we did not see his Kara "moment" coming.....[/sarcasm]

Alex: Thanksgiving scene...so, knowing that her father is alive....knowing the threat Cadmus poses to her sister's life, Alex's greatest concern is her own issues?? Unrealistic reactions, and rather singleminded of the showrunners.

She calls Maggie to send a squad to Lena's..and Maggie is acting on what authority? Even if a Federal agency requested it, a local police force cannot (legally) stomp in. IOW, No warrants, no chance.

Gee...Maggie is hurt and instead of going to a hospital (where her human needs would be best served), she ends up with Alex. Sigh. Predictably telegraphed.

NOTES:

Lena: "As a daughter I always fell short." Can this series ever stop using one story to refer to another?

The Medusa virus: Good to see Cadmus is acting fast, and this plot not drag on forever--all too convenient it elements could be engineered to work on a Martian.

BEST SCENE:

Cyborg Hank weathering the fusillade of bullets while taunting Supergirl. He's one of the few villains to seem truly dangerous.

Supergirl chasing a rocket....another callback to Superman the Movie.

OK, Supergirl staff, we get it, you really don't like to let other's play with your toys, do you?

Actually a pretty good episode of Supergirl but what a lame crossover "event".

I didn't care much for James/Kara and I really like Mon-El but I hope nothing can be read into why they might have dumped one for the other.

Can't believe they tricked me into watching this.

There was no trick. The fact that this was just a prelude with the tie-in only being in the final minutes was overtly stated in the advance publicity and interviews. Okay, the promos on TV were a bit misleading, but that's only to be expected of advertising, which is why it's best not to rely on it as an exclusive source of information. And really, it stands to reason. Supergirl is set in a different universe from the one where Earth is being invaded, so how could it be more than a peripheral part of the crossover?

And that kind of setup has precedent in comics, due to their serial nature. I'm reminded of the way Marvel's original Secret Wars miniseries was set up by the various comics whose casts it brought together -- the preceding issues just had the characters get swept away in the last page or two, followed by a "To Be Continued in" notice like we got here. So it did feel very comic-booky.

Actually, they managed to tie it in more than I expected, with Vibe's portals showing up twice in the course of the episode and even helping to save Supergirl from Henshaw. That was a clever touch.

What wasn't so clever was having James, Winn, and Alex have a whispered conversation about the Guardian while Kara was just a few feet away. Umm, super-hearing, anyone? I know it's a pretty common convention in screen adaptations to assume that Kryptonians' enhanced senses are only engaged when they choose to turn them on, but I tend to assume it's more a matter of what they choose to focus their attention on at a given moment. It's hard to believe Kara didn't overhear them.

Also, they explained why the Medusa virus didn't hurt Kryptonians, but they neglected to explain why it didn't hurt humans.

I hadn't expected them to wrap up Cadmus (or at least Lillian's part in it) so quickly -- or to cure J'onn so quickly. That was a bit anticlimactic. Still, I saw what Lena was doing a mile away, though I guess they did a pretty good job of making it credible that she might actually be helping her mother rather than sabotaging her.

Since I watch this show and The Flash but don't find the other two worthwhile I was just as glad to get a decent "stand alone" episode.

I didn't care much for James/Kara and I really like Mon-El but I hope nothing can be read into why they might have dumped one for the other.

Kreisberg issued an excuse, but the torrential flood of hate the James character / Brooks received (all season long) for being involved with white Supergirl had everything to do with why James was dumped in favor of Mon-El. It had nothing to do with a lack of chemistry, or any other BS excuse. Everyone knew the Mon-El sales job was coming the second James was dropped from SG's life.

So much for the show that loves to pat itself on the back for being so progressive. There are some good points about the show, but the more than sudden dropping of the James/Kara issue--built over an entire 1st season--is a stain it cannot remove.

My full review of "Medusa":
Supergirl continues its streak of superb episodes with a stellar "midseason finale" that was actually better than last year's, "Hostile Takeover", and sets up some interesting stuff for the rest of the season, what with Cyborg Superman still being on the loose and the introduction of a new threat in whomever those hooded aliens were who were looking for Mon-El while also being a stellar setup for what Felicity Smoak will accurately describe as the "best teamup ever!".

It doesn't surprise me that they resolved J'onn's "White Martian" problem as quickly as they did, because one of the things that this producing team has learned over the years is that it's better to not dilly-dally when it comes to dealing with storylines, and because there was honestly only so much you could do with that storyline without having to fully commit to making the character a White Martian permanently, which would've only added to the show's CGI budget and overall production/shoot time.

I also liked that the episode pretty much dispelled the notion that Lena Luthor is anything like her mother and brother, especially when you take the character's comics history into account and the fact that she's never once been portrayed as being a villain in any of the appearances she's made in other mediums. I did have a moment where I went "why?" when she handed her mother that isotope, but by the time it was revealed that she'd actually neutralized the virus, it was pretty clear that she was actually working AGAINST her mother rather than with her.

Eliza knowing that Alex was gay (which I missed, BTW, in the episode itself) doesn't surprise me at all because it's very much a "mom thing", and I love that she was immediately accepting.

I do have to walk back my earlier insistence that they weren't actually going with #Sanvers, but I've honestly never been more glad to have been wrong in my entire life, because I really do like the way that Chyler and Floriana play off of each other.

I've never had the same problem that some people have with Alex not actually putting her bioengineering skills to use, but I did like that we got to see her use that particular part of her expertise here, and to see Eliza's similar skillset as well.

I thought it was interesting that the show went out of its way to reference/confirm that there's still tension between Cisco and Barry as a result of the revelations that came out on last week's episode of The Flash since I know some people had been questioning the status of their platonic relationship after they left it kind of hanging, and appreciated that, in doing so, the producers were cementing SG as an official part of the Arrowverse - even though it's set in another universe - by applying established Arrowverse storytelling patterns to it.

Circling back to the hooded aliens I mentioned earlier, does anybody have any idea who they might be? I initially thought we might actually be seeing the Dominators in two different universes, but that's clearly not the case since these aliens are decidedly humanoid and the Dominators aren't.

In closing, I'm so glad we only have to wait less than 24 hours now to see Kara's journey to Earth-1, because I might go crazy otherwise.

Cool. I wonder if they'll somehow cross universes, or if we'll see them introduced into the show as 'natives' of "Earth-CBS".

Well, we know there are Thanagarians in both universes -- and, well, humans. So it stands to reason that other species exist in both universes too. Sure, it's possible that the same Dominators will cross universes to get revenge on Supergirl or something, but I wouldn't be surprised if that universe's parallel Dominators just showed up in some alien crowd scene offworld or something. After all, they went to so much trouble to build the digital models of the Dominators -- helps justify the cost if you can reuse them.

And man, I really hope tomorrow's episode assigns an official number to Supergirl's Earth.

I liked this crossover episode. It was everything I expected. A standalone with a touch of Barry, just like those hooks at the end of the Marvel movies leading up to The Avengers.
  • Mon-El was so faking it when he threw a coughing fit. He just didn't want to talk about mating with Supergirl.
  • Supergirl's landing was pretty cool. A new bit of fx they can add to the mix.
  • I was surprised too that Hank was cured so quickly. I wonder why they didn't play it out more. Wrapping it up didn't seem like it was part of the plan all along.
  • Felt like one of those Dallas/Dynasty-type soap operas in some spots. It's like we now have the House of El vs the Luthors. Not a complaint, just an observation.
  • I could see why RealHank called himself Cyborg Superman. He's not all there. If there's more to it than that I can't wait to hear what it is. Whatever the case, his "I'M CYBORG SUPERMAN!!!" didn't seem so contrived this week.
Well, we know there are Thanagarians in both universes -- and, well, humans.
And probably Batman.

Also, they explained why the Medusa virus didn't hurt Kryptonians, but they neglected to explain why it didn't hurt humans.
^^^
Yep - this was the largest unanswered 'idiot ball' aspect of the episode. Kara's father said Medusa was designed to kill ANY non-Kryptonian physiology; so, yeah, why wouldn't Earthings (aka Humans) be outright killed by the virus as well. <--- Never even brought up by anyone in any way. (I mean hell, they could have said Mama Luthor managed to modify it to not affect Humans or something.)

Also, you'd think with a Kryptonian weapon that could kill EVERY alien on the planet, Kara MIGHT call in her cousin for help?

And again, although I've stated before I don't mind the occasional 'handwave', the pat resolution of Eliza Danvers coming up with a cure at the end that also cures Martian Manhunter's 'White Martian blood transfusion 'poisoning' was really pushing it.

I realize television has sadly moved away from doing holiday episodes but the whole thanksgiving aspect of the episode was ridiculous in how fast it began and ended

They had a real crossover before, and it was actually quite charming, there's no reason they couldn't have worked the story in with this, either. Have Barry arrive early and help her with a problem that's thematically relevant to the story as a whole, at the very least.

Or they could have used this opportunity to win over new fans that were checking this out because of the crossover. As it is, they did neither of those very well.

You answered your own question. They already did an episode in which Barry shows up and helps Kara solve a problem. Why copy themselves? The Flash episode is the true follow up to their first meeting by doing something new.
