Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

I have to think that it would only look worse for Supergirl that she was around to stop a petty crime but didn't save so many others like that kid.

She didn't care about the optics, she was just trying to prevent people from getting hurt.

- Good little message about how people shouldn't rely on heroes. By the way, you could feel Lord's jealousy. Or was it? It wouldn't surprise me if he turned out to be a Kryptonian or something who believes that humans should learn to stand on their own.

Oh, I hope not. The question of whether humans can become too dependent on a superhero is one that Elliot S! Maggin addressed interestingly in a noted '70s comics story as well as his brilliant novel Superman: Last Son of Krypton, and it would be nice to see this show engage that question sincerely and on its merits rather than just making it a smokescreen for a clash between superpowered aliens.

Although the Maxwell Lord of the comics is a mind-controller...

- Yeah, that talk-down was lame. People get themselves killed in situations like that.

The fact that she was risking her life was what made it such an important moment. But she's not just any person, she's a symbol. And she was able to bluff the guy, because he believed that nothing he could do would hurt her. (Which is a refreshing change from all the scenes of bad guys emptying their clips on Superman even though they should know going in that it's futile.)

I almost cried at the Martian Manhunter reveal. Not because I thought Henshaw was J'onn since his eyes first glowed red -- though I was excited that my supposition was right. I was on the verge of tears because 1) his speech was amazing and 2) I never ever thought I would ever see Martian Manhunter in any live-action production, and certainly not looking as super awesome as he did.

You forgot Phil Morris on Smallville? He was terrific in the role. Although we only got one brief CGI glimpse of his Martian form.

(There was also David Ogden Stiers in the cheesy '97 JLA pilot.)

Really? Shoot, I should have paid attention to that show. Yeah, I didn't watch Smallville; the first episode I saw was the two-hour finale. :)

Also, I'm more convinced than ever that we'll see Jeremiah Danvers as the Cyborg Superman. Alex's father and Kara's stepfather died a hero -- and now he's been perverted into something that is the antithesis over everything they knew and ould be way too loved about him.
Danvers as Cyborg Superman eh? I did wonder if and how they'd get Dean Cain back into the suit.

I think its depends on who Zoom turns out to be on The Flash. If he is John Wesley Shipp as many think I doubt it. It would basically be the same idea. The hero's father turns out to be a villain. Both played by actors who played the hero in similar costumes in 1990 tv series.

Speaking of Winn, he was kind of a jerk here. What business did he have getting upset about a simple thank-you hug between friends?

Because its been established that Kara and James are close in ways she's not with Winn. The hug was more than just that conversation--the same with their parting glance at the end of the episode.

And what business does he have acting possessive about Kara? That whole thing seemed like forced conflict and didn't really work.

He's a geek, so his socially clumsy behavior all spilled out: he wanted Kara all for himself (from the start), and is jealous no matter what he sees--or imagines is going on between Kara and James.

That's no answer. He doesn't have any claim over her, so what gives him the right to disapprove? Jealousy is not a moral high ground. She wasn't doing anything wrong.

Yes, obviously that's what was going on, but that is how a selfish jerk behaves, so it is anything but a defense of his actions. Before, his crush on Kara has been passive and harmless enough to be sympathetic. He's had feelings for her but has respected her right to make her own relationship choices and hasn't tried to impose his feelings in a way that would damage their friendship. Now he's suddenly and inexplicably being creepy and entitled about it.

The bit where she bluffed the looter and talked him down was terrific, but undermined by the intercutting with Cat's speech. Both scenes were good by themselves, but the jumping back and forth seemed to dilute them both rather than achieving the synergy they were presumably trying for.

I thought the synergy was tremendous - and all tied together with the scene at the very end between SG and Cat. Cat's caustic and acerbic but is turning into quite the mentor figure.

Of course it wasn't his business. People do things like that though - including otherwise-good people that need to grow and learn. People are messy. See: Xander Harris. (Also what's transpiring between Kara and James is more than a thank-you hug).

Phil Morris' role was definitely a good part of some otherwise-uninspired material. :techman:

It had the right spirit, I'll agree on that, but it played out as rather simplistic, I thought.

I figured this would be the case since the red eyes.

That looked a lot like Ma'alefa'ak's costume--or is that Manhunter's new 52 look?

This Hankshaw version of MM doesn't appear to have super strength or other powers besides shapeshifting; if he did, he would be out there doing superheroics just like Superman. The Henshaw name was also used as a red herring to detract viewers' realization of his true identity.

He ripped open a supergirlproof bomb with his bare hands, and broke out of those Saturnian proof handcuffs as if they were made out of green cheese.

Although if John is also a telepath, why didn't he notice the pretty women mistrusting him?

He's not nosy.

I'm starting to think Supergirl is starting to find it's footing because this was another great episode tonight. I loved the message of looking for a hero from within and I thought the looting scene and cutting to Cat's speech was really well done. Also love the reveal at the end, even though I have no idea what it means. I had to wait until the second the last episode to find out the truth of something in The Flash. I'm glad I didn't have to wait nearly as long to find out this reveal, and that's why I loved it.

Also, Benoist is still knocking it out of the park. I'm starting to think she's better as Supergirl than Gustan is as The Flash so far.
