Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

I was under the impression that Gotham's ratings have steadily been falling and falling. Is that true?

Sort of. There have been a couple of slight upticks, but the trend has been mildly downward with general viewers and significantly downward with the key 18-49 demographic. Also, the second season premiere's ratings were about half those of the series premiere. But it's still holding in the top half of FOX's scripted shows.

Well, I had been watching Gotham live and catching BBT online later...but the one-two punch of BBT and Supergirl has me doing the opposite this week...and given how Gotham is going, the habit is liable to stick.

Does this mean they intended for Big Bang Theory to help boost Supergirl?

Yes. They initially announced SG as premiering in its 7/8 pm timeslot on 11/2, but then subsequently announced (less than a week later) that it would actually be premiering on 10/26 at 7/8:30 with BBT as its lead-in.

^ A lack of confidence? Or wanting their big budget show to hit the ground running?

So, it's on... They gave baby Kal-El a spit curl.

So they left in the time discrepancy...24 years ago Krypton was in danger, or she was in the Phantom Zone for 24 years and has been on Earth since she was 13...which is it?

Kara is appealing, as is her (hopefully) growing relationship with Jimmy Olsen.

Negative:I was rather shocked by the low quality FX of Kara's ship leaving Krypton, and the planet's destruction.

Expect the D.E.O. to create a major rift between the recently reconciled sisters.

1x01...

  • What changes did they make from the leaked pilot aside from the adding of credits and a title?

  • I don't like Hank Henshaw. He starts off by having her shot right out of the sky. Not a great way to start a working relationship. The situation with him isn't as black and white as events showed us but still...

  • Chyler Leigh looks like she could be Dean Cain's daughter.

  • Lexi is someone to keep an eye on. She gave that little speech about how she was the star until Kara came along. Same thing that irked Lex Luthor. Can't wait to see where they go with this.

I wasn't impressed with this first episode. It came off as a bit cheap and pretty much by the numbers superhero TV fair. I was actually kind of bored.

It did have a network-ish by-the-numbers feel, but it also has some potential with Hank, Lexi and Jimmy if they want to make use of what they set up with these characters.

They added Kara actually saying "Superman" to the opening narration. In the leaked Pilot she never said his actual name.

A pretty good pilot, but pretty darn rushed. I wonder why nobody does 2-hour pilots anymore. Or even 90 minutes.

Benoist is appealing. Brooks is pretty good -- not what you expect from Jimmy Olsen, but that's the point, since he's grown out of the cub-reporter years and is a grown man now. The rest of the cast is mostly okay, but I feel that David Harewood's performance suffers a bit from being saddled with an American accent, and Chyler Leigh is a bit bland as Alex. (And it's interesting that Dean Cain got special-guest billing for a wordless, 20-second cameo.)

It's interesting that this shares something in common with the '84 Supergirl movie, aside from Helen Slater's presence. Both stories are about Kara becoming Supergirl in order to fix a problem that she herself inadvertently caused -- sending the Omegahedron to Earth in the movie, bringing Fort Rozz to Earth here. (I keep wanting to spell it Fort Ra's, because of how they pronounce Ra's al Ghul's name in Arrow and the movies.)

I like it that the show makes no apologies about being feminist. That's not a dirty word, and it's good that the show embraces it. At least, I hope it gets to continue to embrace it. I remember the '70s Wonder Woman pilot having a front-and-center feminist message that got totally quashed after just a few episodes. Hopefully we've gained some ground since then.

I also like how much time she spent in costume. Too many superhero series in the past have minimized the in-costume time. Hopefully that won't be the case here. I don't like it, though, that Henshaw and Alex were openly blabbing about Kara's true identity in front of dozens of people in the secret agency headquarters.

A bit of a naming error -- they referred to Kara's mother as Alura Zor-El, but that's not how Kryptonian names work. The female second name is the father's name, not the husband's. Kara Zor-El's mother is Alura (originally Allura) In-Ze. (And Jor-El's wife is Lara Lor-Van, not Lara Jor-El.)

Who was that playing Kara's evil aunt in the tag scene there? Was that Laura Benanti in a dual role, or a different actress who just looks similar?

So what was changed from the leaked pilot? It seemed to me that the costume-design sequence was shortened from what was in the extended teaser video. And, as noted, they added "Superman" to the opening narration. Any other changes?

And Gotham also seems to be geared much more toward the comic book crowd than the mainstream one, so I'm not sure there would be a ton of crossover anyway.

I don't think Gotham's makers have any clue what the comic books are like. They're making some bizarre hybrid of Christopher Nolan, Joel Schumacher, and William Dozier Batman. They're using characters from the comics, but not in any way that's really recognizable. Supergirl is from Berlanti, so it's likely to be a lot more comics-faithful.

Well I didn't say it was an accurate or good comic book show. ;) But I do still think it appeals to a pretty limited male fanboy crowd compared to something like Supergirl which is clearly trying to be much more approachable and mainstream (much like Lois & Clark back in the day).

Too bad that they can't get JMS to do this show-it would be amazing. And it would stick to one style, too.

As for the Supergirl show? Good, although I don't like what the did to Vartox (who was a good friend of Superman's and was a variation on him.) I also can't believe that they created a male version of Amanda Waller who acts like General Sam Lane and distrusts Supergirl (and also Superman.) Loved the idea of a black Jimmy Olsen who's actually Supergirl's other minder besides her sister (and also a potential love interest), and can't believe that Cat Grant's the head of a media company employing her.

So far, so good-let's hope that the rest of the series shapes up.

Yeah, it's weird these days for an hourlong show to start at half past the hour. I can understand CBS's reasoning in using The Big Bang Theory as the lead-in -- it's pretty much the closest thing they have to Supergirl in terms of target audience -- but it's also competing with Gotham, and starting half an hour later could put it at a disadvantage. I hope the offset time slot doesn't hurt it.

Funny, when Star Trek first aired it started at 8:30-9:30

Its been mentioned that Helen Slater and Dean Cain will appear again. She said months ago that she has a contract for reoccurring appearances. Basically that she will be available for whenever and as often as they want. Similar to John Wesley Shipp on "The Flash". I think its a reasonable guess that Dean Cain has a similar contract here.

In fact I read that they recently filmed a flashback heavy episode of Kara's younger years on Earth.

CBS also aired The Flash from 8:30 to 9:30, but then CBS was afraid of The Simpson's and The Cosby Show at 8:00.

Personally I was impressed by the airplane rescue and although I missed most of the climax it looked good in the promos. Overall I thought it was pretty good for a pilot.

My thoughts on this are basically the same as they were the first time I saw it :shifty: It was...ok. A bit bland, a bit annoying but with some good stuff, and Supergirl herself is pretty good (as is Jimmy Olsen). Her guy friend from work was inoffensive, although kind of forgettable. The action was also pretty good, especially on a TV budget. I hope we get more of the character who imdb calls "The Commander" (he's the one who was giving orders to the villain of the week over video in the truck. I liked the actor in his (somewhat minor) role in Warehouse 13, and it would be cool to see him again.

As for the bad stuff, I hated the generic "you shouldn't be a hero" stepsister. She was giving me a big "Johnathon Kent in Man of Steel" vibe after the plane incident, which is not a good thing. The fact that she also betrayed Kara (which is also kind of a betrayal of Superman, who gave Kara to the Danvers family probably trying to avoid something like what the stepsister did with the government) was also pretty bad. Everything with Cat Grant was irritating, stupid, and unoriginal. I think they'll be sticking with it, but I really wish they wouldn't. Cat Grant, the stepsister and the Henshaw were horrible characters, and easily the worst parts of the pilot.

Whether I watch the whole thing will depend on how intrusive the Cat Grant and Henshaw segments become. If they tone that stuff down a bit, I'll probably be fine. If they get even more annoying, I might drop the show after a few episodes. Either way, I'll definitely be watching the next few episodes.
