Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

Oh, and the DEO is definitely using UNIT's radio codes from Doctor Who -- Greyhound, Trap Leader, Trap One/Two/etc. (I've always wondered what greyhounds and traps have to do with each other. Is it racing-related or hunting-related?)

But in this version he's been Superman for years, so you'd think he'd have encountered it first, and might have warned Kara about it.

Truth is that the show is having its cake and eating it too...freely referencing established aspects of the Superman mythos, but also indulging in "firsts" that should be old news in a world with a well-established Superman.

Perhaps the DEO was the first group to discover the element, and in quick fashion, collected as many of the surviving, usable remains, so unlike the comics, you did not have every other villain running around with Kryptonite as a weapon.

Whoever Henshaw turns out to be, he (and i'm assuming associates yet to be introduced) will take full advantage of Kryptonite in all the wrong ways.

and they're definitely not holding back on the aggressiveness of the fights between female characters.

That's standard on most crime and action shows. For example, over its 11 seasons, Criminal Minds had many of its female characters get into violent fights, usually with women and men.

I'm not sure if these episodes are good or not as I think Melissa Benoist could just read the phone book and I'd be happy.

Really enjoyed this one.
I loved the scenes of her going around practicing her heroics.
We got lots of great action here, both in the Kara/Alex fight, and the Kara/Helgramite/Alex/Astra fight. I was not expecting Kara's first confrontation with her aunt to happen in the second episode.
They did seem to tone down Cat and Henshaw a bit.
So is nobody else going to go for the obvious route with Henshaw and drop the Cyborg Superman bomb? If that is the case, then I'm wonder if he was, fixed or whatever route they go with his origin, by Astra or somebody else?
I love that they gave Kara her own hologram of parent.

My review
I really enjoyed tonight's episode, and thought it was better than the Pilot, which I also really enjoyed.

I love the relationship between Alex and Kara; it really is the heart of the series, just as Greg and Andrew have said, and, for all of the ups and downs we've seen them go through both tonight and in the Pilot, it's literally impossible for them to stay at odds with each other for long, which is just as it should be. I loved their conversation about Kara being afraid of an electric popcorn maker and Alex helping alleviate her fears.

Cat was one of my favorite parts of the episode just as she was in the Pilot, and it was great hearing her talk about her past at the Daily Planet. I also really liked the way that Kara as Supergirl introduced herself to her, and can't wait to see them interact more as Cat pursues her "kick-a** expose" on SG.

I love that the S shield isn't just a visual symbol of the House of El but also represents an actual Kryptonese phrase because it not only gives Kara and her allies a rallying cry, but because it makes the symbol function exactly the way that real coats of arms do.

Winn and James working together to help Kara repair her image and hone her heroics made for a really fun sequence, and it'll be really interesting to see if there's any jealousy or resentment if/when they figure out that the other has romantic designs on her.

Laura Benanti is absolutely killing it in her triple role as the real Alura, AI!Alura, and Astra, and we've only barely seen anything of the three characters thus far. Astra's fight with Kara was seriously brutal, and can only get moreso from here as Kara figures out how to stop her by learning more about her history and honing her fighting abilities, and I can't wait to see how that conflict unfolds.

David Harewood had previously hinted that there might be more to Hank Henshaw than meets the eye and so I wasn't all that surprised by the 'red eyes reveal', but I'm hoping they won't make us wait too long for the payoff of this angle.

James may have agreed to serve as a mentor to Kara in lieu of Superman, but I love that she was able to serve as a bit of a mentor for him as well. Their conversation at CatCo was brilliantly written and acted, and really helped cement their relationship and partnership.

I don't really mind the Villain of the Week formula that is pretty much a necessity in television storytelling, and really liked the way they used the Hellgramite as part of the plot, even if he wasn't as big of a focus as I was expecting him to be.

Speaking of characters who didn't get as big a focus as I was expecting, Peter Facinelli's Maxwell Lord being introduced via TV was an interesting way to bring him on, and sets up an interesting avenue for the writers to explore and that sort of makes him the Lex/Lionel Luthor of this series.

Supergirl really is off to a flying start, and I can't wait to see what else Berlanti and Co. have in store for us as the season continues.

Well that was...stupid. Especially the DEO stuff. Superman generall doesn't know any hand to hand combat either (outside of some random versions I'm sure someone will bring up), but he's been doing pretty well for himself for the last 70+ years of stories. For a TV hero example, The Flash has no fist fighting ability, but that doesn't hold him back. But, I guess they have to pretend that the Supergirl has some reason to interact with her adopted sister and the DEO, when she really doesn't.

Cat Grant is almost Detective Lance levels of episode derailing horrible. I really hope karma kicks her arrogant ass. Hopefully with a meteor to the head, along with the adopted sister and henshaw. The stuff with Jimmy makes no sense. Its obviously he's famous in his profession. If Grant fired him, he could probably find a bunch of jobs in his line of work in National City alone, so it really shouldn't be any kind of threat at all.

One thing that's obvious at this point is that this show is aimed much more at the Felicity (Co-starring The Arrow) audience then it is the audience of The Flash. It has all the family drama with a bunch of horrible characters (including the a-hole authority figures) and mediocre writing. I have no idea why The Flash is so great while Arrow (post Season 2) and Supergirl are atrocious. I guess all the good writers wanted to be working on The Flash, so Arrow and Supergirl get what's left. I'll give Supergirl a few more episodes, just because I still really want a good superhero show based around a female hero. Instead, we get a show with worse writing than the 80s Supergirl movie. At this rate, I don't think we'll be getting a good live action female superhero based thing until the Captain Marvel movie gets made.

I'm not sure how they can continue to have such production values each week, let alone a superbattle but I'm enjoying it while it lasts.
Arrow and The Flash have mounted impressive production values and effects/stunt work. Warner Bros is clearly not skimping or relying solely on the license fees provided by the network to make their shows as well produced as possible.

The humor and banter are very much in the vein of the other Berlanti shows. It struck me today that Kara is basically the love child of Felicity Smoak and Barry Allen.
Winn and Cisco are so much alike, they could turn out to be long lost half brothers, or at least, cousins!
I missed glowing red eyes?

Right after Henshaw refers to Kara as "Supergirl" to Alex (which he told her not to repeat to her sister), he walks away and his eyes momentarily glow red.
The only DC character I could think of with red eyes is J'onn Jonzz, the Martian Manhunter. To better keep tabs on other aliens, he leaves his police detective persona behind and gets in with the DEO, perhaps? :)

I'm getting tired of the conceit of all 3 shows where someone is sitting at a computer feeding crimes to the hero to stop.

I wonder what Astra meant by saving the planet (Earth) and humanity. To paraphrase what she said, "Your loyalty to the humans is misplaced. You must not stand against me. I've lost one planet and and I'm not going to let it happen again." She even assured Agent Danvers that it was not her intent to kill her.

Hank Henshaw doesn't appear to be human, but as head of a covert agency, his intentions couldn't be harmful.

The show looks slick as hell though. I could see people who're turned off by other shows tuning into this one. I don't even mean the FX but just the overall look has major network sheen.

Wow, that was just a massively fun second episode that was even better than the first. Lots of cool action and fun dialogue, and somehow Benoist managed to be even more charming than she was before (and it looks like she's been glammed up a bit as well, not that she really needed it).

Astra saw a threat to Krypton she thought that she could stop that got her jailed, which is repeating history on Earth today?

Astra is a goody?

Well, that all depends on what destroyed Krypton?

Braniac?

Doomsday?

A Sun Eater?

Zod tapping the core for "energy".

Of course if Krypton was destroyed by Paralax/Zero Hour, she could be looking for young Hal Jordan... Which would create a Parallax paradox by killing a time traveller before he time travels.

- Not thrilled with the villain of the week but at least it segued into Astra's arc.

- Benoist's look is a little different. Guess they took a little time to find just the right look.

- I like how they've added a bit of realism to Supergirl's powers. Whenever she tries to move large things like planes and ships, she does some damage.

- Lots of Superman references. They could have felt overdone like name-dropping but they didn't, for the most part. Cat's Perry White reference felt like that name-dropping.

- I like the look of Krypton. Reminded me of Coruscant.

- The kryptonite blade wasn't lethal enough. Hopefully it was the low-grade stuff. She shouldn't have been able to fly out of there with that thing in her leg.

- Henshaw was less of a dick. He's coming around. But what is he?

- As with Arrow, they don't waste time. The show is advancing nicely. Next week... Cat confronts Supergirl.

-I loved how Krypton looks on this show, it reminds me of the designs for planets and civilizations used on the later Star Trek shows (TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise) and less like the ridiculous designs seen in Superman-The Movie and Man Of Steel (why would Jor-El use a flying creature to get around and not something like a car? And how could humanoid beings live on an all-crystal planet that looks like our moon?)

-Supergirl should have pushed the ship from the back, or use the freeze breath to create an ice sheet that she could drop on the fire, causing it to evaporate and become rain that puts the fire out. Unfortunately, of course, she didn't know about that power yet.

-Looks like they decided to give Supergirl brunette hair instead of blonde.

So is Henshaw the new Harrison Wells?

It's kind of interesting how this series is mirroring the flash so far. Second episode of each series focusing on the training aspects. I am getting tired of the superman references and wish this show can stand on its wn but overall I liked it. I also appreciated Pers Hapley as a news reporter for National City.

Ha yeah, we went from one reference to a whole freakin ton of them. So hopefully that will put to rest the idea that there's some studio-imposed "limit" they can't go over.

Yeah I'm kinda hoping we'll get a fun crime-fighting montage in every episode now. :D

Huh? How would learning basic hand to hand combat techniques not be a really valuable thing for any superhero to learn? Just because it hasn't been done in the past doesn't mean it's still not a VERY sensible idea, or something we should not see explored. Especially in this case, when Supergirl will be going up against other superpowered aliens who will be basically at her same power level.

Barry doesn't go up against a lot of other speedsters, so he can nearly always use his speed to make up for his lack in fighting ability.

Well yeah, but that was clearly a way of showing her being "clumsy and awkward" in saving the day early on, and not really being experienced enough yet.

And who knows, with the force she was exerting on the ship, she might have simply crumpled up the rear of the ship and caused it to leak from there instead.

I hope no one here started a drinking game for every time they say Superman on the show.
