Sunshine and Rainbows and Puppies and Discovery

If we can have a thread(or twelve) about everything you HATE about Star Trek Discovery, I think it's only fair we had one about everything you LOVE about it. :D

So let's start with an easy one, first of all, I love that there's a new Star Trek series on. :techman:

Visually, I really loved the space porn. The spacey shots were just beautiful.
On a smaller scale, I loved the boots that come with the uniform ;)

So, what do you love about this show?

Edit:
SPOILERS for aired episodes likely, so beware!

Special effects were gorgeous.

The bit about the desert planet and the creepy aliens and their water was pretty cool. I can see all kinds of ways to wrap an entire episode around that.

I like Frain as Sarek.

Interior sets were fantastic.

Star Trek is back!

I liked hearing TOS sounds here and there, as well as seeing the various props and how they are definite forerunners of TOS.

I liked how Michelle Yeoh could easily be a ship's captain in TOS, just by her mannerisms and style. She could be calculating and analytic, but would not hesitate to draw a phaser on her First Officer to stop her in her tracks. Good balance of thoughts and actions.

Oh, and the homage to the TOS Transporter in the three sliders (with accompanying sounds). I know they did it in TNG as well, but seeing it and hearing it here was a nice touch.

Where's the Guy.. you know.. some random guy who is in every episode.. like Guy from Galaxy Quest??

We need a Guy on Discovery..

I really loved the scene where Michael talked the computer into letting her escape.

I loved that bit too, and the computer didn't even blow up afterwards like it would have if Kirk did the talking ;)

Agreed with the above. Plus:
I just love the fact that were back in the 23rd century era of Star Trek, where there are actual relateable Humans again; and we're done with the 24th century Utopian, Uni-minded, sermonizing Humans (with their Humainity pretty much removed) of the 24th Century Star Trek era. (YMMV.)

That there's gonna be a second pilot this Sunday to introduce the main cast. I'm taking the long view on this incarnation. So funny how Orville gets a pass, and after 12 years, a new Trek show gets lambasted by a precious few. But that's Trekdom... :)

Because The Orville just started up and hit the ground running, in its own universe and takes you along for the ride, right from the first episode.

DSC is going into a third episode, which is being called the second pilot (?) and for me has yet to start kicking into gear. Yes it's been 12 years since a Trek series, but after that time, they really needed to up their game and come back with a bang.

The bar was for Orville to hit the ground from the top of the Empire State Building. The fact that it exceeded those lofty expectations and didn't sprain its ankles is viewed as "running" by a few folks. All righty then.

The bar for Discovery was pie in the sky, and a mere delicious slice of lemon meringue as the pilot is viewed as a failure by a few folks. I for one look forward to the second pilot--apple pie?--and how the story of this Trek incarnation unfolds.

In any event, I'll be tuning in to both gladly and thankfully, realizing both shows have their flaws.

I'll be watching both as well. Just for me, DSC needed to have a little more for its start, and didn't.

While I greatly enjoyed the premiere, I don't disagree with that. In fact, I will admit that until I saw the "coming attractions", I was left a bit underwhelmed by the story line, but only given those lofty expectations I alluded to.

In contrast, the Orville many figured would be abject crap, and it having turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable--if highly flawed and uneven--was a welcome development.

:)

The first episode (I haven't seen ep 2 yet, cuz I watched it on CTV) seemed like a comic book dialogue wise.

I like the uniforms and the sound effects.
