Sunshine and Rainbows and Puppies and Discovery

I loved the special effects. Enjoyed the battle scenes. Loved the ship as it dropped through the clouds to pick them up. It was a thing of beauty.

I was expecting something very un-Trek, like the reboot movies. However, Burnam talking to the computer, the drawing the Starfleet symbol in the sand, the crew chemistry in general, the actually bothering to discuss things for longer than a few seconds and the general scientifically implausible but Sci-Fi perfect scenes made me feel "at home" with Star Trek. People have complained that it is too slow, which means that it actually has hope of being watchable. Compared to TV series in general, It's very high quality. Not quite main-run TNG, but certainly better than most of the first two seasons of TNG. The acting from all of the cast was quite solid. And if you want action and a fast pace, go watch almost any other TV show. It's been 12 years since Star Trek has been on air, and some people might just enjoy a bit of a change back to what Trek is supposed to be. That said, this series could easily get Reboot-ish sadly. Generally, however, the series is far, far better than I had dared hope.

I loved. . .
  • Scenes exploring the mysterious object. Tension and awe of the unknown.
  • Tone. Serious and realistic. Feels like a real ship really out there, not some bland hotel in space.
  • Flawed characters and interesting dynamics.
  • Mission at the beginning of ep 1. And those alien designs.
  • Ship, Klingon, uniforms, and interior designs.
  • Interesting new perspective on the Trek universe.
  • Action! And amazing CGI!
I'm really interested to see where this is going. I hate prequels and had low expectations for this show, but I can't believe I'm excited about Star Trek again after all these years!

DSC has a second pilot? But why? Was the first pilot a failure? Did the execs thought it was "too cerebral"?

Burnham - I love that she is flawed. She goes from being up for her own command to being up for a life sentence. It was pretty refreshing to see starfleets best and brightest fail.
Georgiou
Saru
The crew diversity displayed on the bridge
the new starfleet ship designs
That the creators took risks by not introducing the hero ship in the premier episodes and by killing Georgiou
The Klingons are actually threatening and alien as their ships. I'm glad that the Klingons spoke to each other in klingonese and the writers didn't dumb it down and make it easy for themselves and the audience by having the klingons speak english
The sassy computer (Though it made me sad when i remembered that Majel Barrett was no longer around)
Minimal technobabble
Having brand new star trek to watch on a weekly basis for the first time in 12 years.

I saw puppies in the title and thought to myself - gee I miss Porthos from ST:ENT.

But, back on topic - Gorgeous visuals in ST DSC.
