Kelvin verse is set up around the Kirk-Spock-McCoy dynamic + Uhura. A Sulu movie is a risky move, and the whole point of the studio rebooting TOS instead of doing something riskier initially, like Star Trek Beginnings was to go with what they new worked. Cho is a good actor but I don't know if a studio would be any more interested in a Sulu movie now than in the 90s
 
Who's the target audience? So is the show starring some other guy from an alternate timeline but we're expected to remember Sulu as being George Takei's portrayal in the Prime timeline?

3 movies based on NuSulu don't exactly have more going on than 79 episodes plus six movies plus a guest spot in the 1990s.

That's a good thing. NuSulu can still go any direction they want, and John Cho clearly has the talent to do it.
Not that I really think this is actually going to happen - I'm not even sure if CBS is allowed reference the movies at all.
