This is a movie about a bunch of bad guys, it would be ridiculous to expect it to not be dark. I can see not wanting a Superman movie to be dark, but this is really the kind of movie that should be at least a bit darker than the usual Marvel style superhero movie.
Which is why the WB had the courage of its artistic convictions, and embraced a hard-R rating! Right? ;)

A movie doesn't have to be R rated to be dark. Hell, some of the Disney animated movies get pretty damn dark, and they're all G or PG.

While I agree with most of the critics for some of the other DC movies that have come out, I have to say that after reading some of these, I'm personally going to wait to actually see the movie before I point any damning fingers at it. It's pretty clear most of these critics aren't familiar with what they're watching, and while their critiques might be applicable to certain portions of the public, I don't think it does a fair job of looking at it from the point of view of people who 'get' the genre.

A lot of criticism is directed at its inconsistent tone.

As to darkness, The Dirty Dozen is the template for a movie like this and it's actually very funny in places, IMHO.

I'm glad I didn't pre-book tickets. I'll be waiting for reviews and audience reactions to all DCU releases from this point on before handing over my money. I was already on the fence anyway, so I can wait a few weeks or even months. (I'll certainly check it out on home release at the very least.)

I was excited for the movie, but after Man of Steel and BvS I'm not going to give this the benefit of the doubt. Oh well, maybe Wonder Woman will be good. And if not that then at least I've got Lego Batman.

It was fairly obvious from the trailers what BvS & MoS were going to be, but so far I've liked what I've seen of Suicide Squad so I think I will give them the benefit of the doubt, despite the negative rumblings.
All I'm hoping for is that it's going to be fun, demented and doesn't take itself too seriously. Nothing mind blowing, just a fun movie. Remember fun? I miss fun sometimes.

Jeremy Jahns liked it.

Normally, his and Chris Stuckmann's views align with my own. I'm still excited for SS. I see every comic book tv series and movie that gets released. Whether it's DC, Marvel, IDW (TMNT), and Vertigo (iZombie, Preacher).

It seems there is a petition to shut down RT due to the low score that the movie is getting. I just laugh at those fans for being so stupid.

Anyways, I'll still see the movie sometime this weekend. Other things for me are more important than this movie at the moment for me.

This reviewer seemed to have had a good time.

A lot of criticism is directed at its inconsistent tone.
A movie about a wide range of grossly different characters with grossly different stories and grossly different backgrounds isn't very consistent? Doubly so considering how it all revolves around a complete and utter lunatic, while simultaneously including some rather simple and straightforward characters relatively speaking? Color me surprised.

I really don't think most of these reviewers knew or understood what they were going in to see. Being inconsistent is sort of a given, all things considered.

Doubly so considering how it all revolves around a complete and utter lunatic...

Not sure whether you mean Harley or the Joker, but the reviews seem to agree that the former is second in prominence to Deadshot and the latter is underutilized and underdeveloped. So it apparently doesn't revolve around either lunatic.

I think that's mistaking subject for execution. The former does not mandate or restrict the latter. A skillful storyteller can combine many disparate elements into a narratively, stylistically, and thematically unified whole (cf. The Avengers), while a less skilled one can struggle to bring a coherent tone to a much more straightforward tale.

In Asian cuisine, so I gather, the key concept is a balance of opposites, like yin and yang. It's about taking very different ingredients with contrasting flavors, textures, etc. and finding the right balance that makes them work together harmoniously. In music, an orchestra is about combining several very different kinds of musical sound into a unified, integrated whole, everything from piccolos to timpanis playing as one. So it's wrong to assume that an incongruity of ingredients requires the final result to be an incoherent mess. That's missing the entire principle of composition.

I also regard the idea of shutting down Rotten Tomatoes as rather stupid. I don't see why many people seemed to regard that site as the last word on every film ever made. If I had adhered to the opinions of the film critics on that site, along with God knows how many other critics, I would have missed out on a lot of movies that proved to be favorites of mine.

You're not accepting this as fact, are you? Without having seen the film?

Why? Why not make up your own mind on whether or not to see a film? Why allow film critics dictate what you do or don't see in the theaters? They're not the last word on the quality of any film. You are. I am. Just about every individual moviegoer.

I love how defensive people get over a movie they haven't seen yet. "X Reviewer said this, and here's why they're wrong...I assume!"

I am making up my own mind. As I said, I was on the fence anyway. Why should I still bother with it after such a wave of bad reviews when I wasn't that jazzed in the first place? I was so-so on Man of Steel and hated Bat v Supes, so why would I continue to go see movies at the cinema that do not satisfy me? As the rest of my post said, I'll still see it at some point on home release, which is when I'll decide for myself if the film is any good. Until then, I'm just hoping and waiting for a kick-ass DCU movie. It's coming.

Well, I, for one, will happily offer a neutral judgment on the film. All I require is chauffeur service to and from the theater, reserved seating, no pre-show commercials or previews, free tickets, and a payment of twenty bucks hourly for my door-to-door time and hassle, plus an hour to write my thoughts. Ljones41, I'll happily send you my Paypal info if you'd like to cover these costs up front, after which I'll provide my properly informed, unvarnished opinion.

Your move.

How much do you rate for a positive review? And a negative one? :shifty:
