Okay now you've got me started...forgive me if this needs a new thread , but..

I had always thought that Starfleet was in many ways based on the U.S. Navy, in terms of rank, chain of command, etc. etc.

I have never served in the military, so I do not know first hand exactly how promotions work, but I do know from my experience in the work force that people are usually promoted to higher positions (I said usually!) because they have paid their dues with a given organization, have proven the ability to handle more responsibility, have undergone the pre-requisite training, and so forth

I am not whining about Kirk's quick transition from cadet to Captain, that really didn't bother me...it just seems that, in the real world, if a First Officer were to demonstrate exceptional bravery, and maybe even save their ship, they would no doubt be commended, probably get a medal or some other honor, and certainly they may be considered a potential candidate for promotion, but I don't think they'd just automatically rise up through the ranks...yet it seems that in this new Trek, Pike demonstrates bravery, is tortured, escapes, and comes home and is automatically promoted to admiral...ditto with Kirk...

I guess my real question then is that does this indicate that Starfleet uses a different system for promoting officers? Seems the more logical approach is to base promotion on merit (time served, proven ability)...Kirk certainly saved the day, but he isn't quite even out of school yet so to speak...wouldnt he need to undergo some more training?

Just a question...
If you check around the forum, there are a few threads dedicated to your question. Interesting answers there. Hope this helps.:techman:

(BTW, does anybody know whether he's intended to be a paraplegic now, in the new timeline, or if his injuries are more temporary in nature?)

I don't think anyone knows what will happen to Pike for certain but in this article that urbandk posted in a different thread, Bruce Greenwood's own created career story for Pike involves him recovering the ability to walk again.

In speaking with the actor he revealed that he has created quite a backstory for Captain Pike, which JJ Abrams hopes to utilize in the upcoming sequel. Unlike the original Pike, Greenwood's interpretation of the character will eventually rise from his wheelchair to one-day walk again

Did anyone else notice the Admirals' names on their nameplates? I saw Admiral James Komack from TOS. Not sure of others. That was a nice nod to TOS.

When I saw it the second time I tried so hard to read everything I could, but I missed it :(

You know, I blame the lense flares...saw it in IMAX the first time, and I think it damaged my retinas...second time, saw it on the regular screen with a friend of mine who is now threatening to sue me for making his vision even worse!

"MY EYES! THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING!":)

I really liked Simon Pegg and the new take on Scotty. I know a lot of people didn't care for it but I dug it. The delivery on the line about his buddy only eating a bean cracked me up.

I liked most of the characters with the exception of the silly Nero. I liked having some likable captains other than Kirk.

The opening scene with the Kelvin was pretty decent.

I really liked seeing it with my 6-year-old nephew who thought it was a "pretty cool movie". He loved seeing young Kirk in the 'Vette which softened me a little bit on that scene and he found the ice monsters pretty intense. And it was fun hearing him say they'd put the bridge back together after it fell apart and then it hitting me that he'd never seen Trek before and was picking up on terms like the bridge.

When Spocked turned down the offer at the Vulcan Science Academy and chose Starfleet instead. I cheered.

Yes, and esp. after the characterization of his lineage, and his mother, as a "disadvantage." I loved Spock's back story. Wanted to see a lil more of it.

1) the sour, silent, long faced alien barfly reminded me greatly of Morn. I don't know if it was a sly nod to DS9 or just coincidence.

I said the same thing to my husband last night. He was like, "B.S."

I liked that we got to see why Pike was the gorram captain before Kirk.

Anyone else LOVE the gun-snatch and double tap he pulled on the Roms when Kirk was unstrapping him from the torture bed and didn't see 'em coming?

What I loved most was the characterisations from the writing through the casting right down to the performances. Simply the best part of the movie. It's what made it for me.

Isn't that the whole movie?

ETA: I loved the entire movie (except for the product placement, because that always sucks in any production).

I didn't read the whole thread, so maybe this was mentioned.

Spoke-Prime to Kirk: "I watched my homeworld die. I am emotionally compromised."

The subtle emphasis in the second sentence made it perfectly clear that Spock-Prime was not just referring to his past self. He is hurting, deeply, and it is only his lifetime of Vulcan control keeping it from showing.

I too immediately thought about Morn and I do think it was a nod to DS9.

ETA: I got a kick out of the 60's mod garb worn by some of the extras in the bar.
Yes, yes and yes! Loved that too! Made me think about the civilian outfits of TOS.

Could someone tell me what song we hear in the bar, btw?

2) (obvious paraphrase) "...and if there is any common sense to the design, you should beam right into the cargo bay. There won't be a soul in sight."...and then Scotty beams Kirk and Spock right into the middle of a bridge full of pissed off Romulans.
There's so much going on in the movie I didn't really appreciate that gem until my second viewing. But even at my first, as soon as Scotty said that, I was sure that they were going to beam in a crowded place

Exactly, and you can only see it when Kirk starts to cry just after the mind meld and Prime Spock apologizes saying that sometimes there's an emotional transfer during the mind meld. So Kirk devastated and crying is what Prime Spock feels inside.
And when you think of it, nuSpock has also lost his mother, which makes him even more emotionally fragilized.

Which makes me think about another thing I liked.
Yes nuKirk is a rebel, a womanizer, he's got some big ego* but his heart is still in the right place. When Prime Spock explains to him what he has to do to have the command of the Enterprise, even if at this point nuSpock isn't really his buddy, it's clear he doesn't want to do that. Prime Spock has to insist.
And when he discovers that he's not assigned on any ship because of his trial, he doesn't try to do anything about it, it's Bones who sneaks him onboard the Enterprise.
And at the end, he offers help to the man who has killed his father.

* whereas it's repeated in TOS that Prime Kirk that he was a sort of a boring bookworm. But then, they had very different childhoods.
It's more than nice to note that the characters's cores are the sames.

Do you think it possible Kirk is by rank a Lt. Commander, but still be Captain of the Enterprise? This could solve some problems.

Loved the ending with Spock saying Space, the final frontier and the end credits with classic musical score. Wow! The audience in the theater started clapping wildly. :D

I really liked the Scotty line (and how he kept beaming into the wrong place).

"If there's any common sense to the design, you should beam right into the cargo bay. Shouldn't be a soul in sight."

Loved the fact that the Kelvin unis were blue, red and green.

Love the fact that Kirk knew Starfleet regulations so well that he could quote them, but he didn't feel like following them. :rommie:
